Welcome to The Ghosts of Dunster Castle, Somerset, England.
(Some images are for illustration only)
Today, we are going on a journey to look at the hauntings and stories at the very active and beautiful Dunster Castle in Somerset. Who haunts the old Keep? What strange things are afoot in the dungeon? Who is lurking on the oak staircase? And what on earth happened to me in the crypt in January that still leaves me feeling unsettled even today? This is a very active location.
Some of the stories focus on historic events and I hope you feel that my video covers the sad side of history in a respectful and honest way, without the need for sensationalising the past. Please stay tuned to the end to hear a small post script from me, Nicola, where I’ll share what happened to me and a postcard.
As always, I hope you enjoy these tales from Dunster Castle. Feel free to leave a comment. Thank you so much for your kind words and comments. They mean so much to me. Please feel free to Like and Subscribe to the channel.
Your support is always appreciated. If your feeling generous, you can buy me a cup of tea using the Ko-fi link below. Your generosity helps to keep the channel producing new content and encourages the channel to expand.

My Stepfather took me and my Mum here in the late 70s, My Stepfather was evacuated to the Castle during the war, he recalled waking up in the night with a Templar Knight in chain mail armour and sword standing over him just watching him silently. He would Draw me a picture of him and recalled the story to me again a few years ago before he died. Thanks Nicola.

@@ghostcasebook1266 Yep , still have the table and it sits at the bottom of the stairs in my cottage. It’s been uneventful for a few years now but the first few weeks….. always in the evening and overnight , it started as a ‘ polite ‘ tapping but by the time I would be in bed the ‘ raps ‘ would resonate up the stairs and wake me up. I investigated ( in sheer terror ) for the first few days and then did my best to ignore it. Why didn’t I get rid ? It’s a lovely table ! I did sleep with the light on and the radio playing for a while…..

@marciaspiegel5280 I moved to OR in 2021. At present I live in a house which I did not like when I moved in. For the first year or so, items seemed to vanish. I knew where I'd put these things, but they were nowhere to be found, and when I stumbled upon them again, they were in very odd places. This fed an active resentment I had toward the house, which, I think, made the activity worse. I did know, though,

Many years ago, I was a volunteer worker at Dunster Castle. According to locals, the 7ft giant was a beggar who wandered between nearby villages and towns, asking for food. This apparently angered William, who imprisoned the giant in the castle dungeons. The giant died of starvation and neglect.

The two Charles' were just as terrible, Cromwell and the roundheads hijacking what would've been the English revolution and turning it into a personal dictatorship has been an absolute travesty for the entire planet. Had Cromwell not taken power instead of the working class, there would've been no liberal desire to return to monarchy, no British Empire, no USA, no WW1 (at least in any form we recognise)... Things would be wildly different, and most likely for the better.

I'll always remember visiting the church at Napton Village in broad daylight and there was 3 of us. We could all hear the organ playing. Then I looked through the door glass and not a single person was inside. Door was unlocked we all walked in and the organ was well and truly locked up. None of us could explain that 🤔 The locals do say that two sisters apparitions have been seen kneeling down facing the Altar and wearing Tudor style clothing 👻 Loved your video I'm sure you were shocked I could tell from your voice. When I was 9 I was taken to Thornton Abbey at Thornton Curtis in North Lincolnshire only the gatehouse still stands. I was walking round with my family and felt the sense of someone following me but no one was there. Later my family was talking to the owners at that time and they told us a monk had sold Abbey property so had been walled in in the church his remains had been found sitting at a table. He is apparently known to haunt the gatehouse. I am a sensitive but didn't know I was at that time, I was very scared of the place and when taken back I refused to go in

Dunster Castle is a marvel thank you for the tour and information! I was really impressed with your story, and thought I would share with you something that happened to me. I was asleep in an old hotel in the states, and at 4 am I heard footsteps. I thought it was someone outside the door. It was winter, I didn't feel like someone had opened a window, I was 5 floors up so no one could of broken in. It must be late night revelers going to bed. I then heard the steps again, and as I was groggy, thought...no...but all of a sudden, I felt the weight of a 200 lb man on my feet and legs holding me down....and I HEARD, but did not FEEL the breath of a man in my ear. I popped up out of bed so fast, and turned on the light, there was no one. My hair up on my arms, I grabbed my phone. The phone was not working at all. I looked down the hallway, there was a closet for coats...and the light was on. I grabbed a trash can, stomped down there to take a swing. I kicked opened the closet door, and swung....but there was only a swinging light bulb. ..... believe me .... I believe you. The sound of that entity breathing in my ear ... was very frightening. I BELIEVE YOU.

I did notice on the section of filming in the crypt, when you started tp pan right, there was an orb of light, drift from top left to bottom right of the frame, very quickly. I'm not a beleiver in orbs, but thought this was interesting.

Dunster Castle is a really fascinating building and we have to be thankful that Cromwell's order to "slight" the castle did not destroy it as at Kenilworth, Corfe and so many other important buildings. My great-great grandmother who was called Charlotte Escott-Wood was from Dunster and like so many country people at this time- the 1840s, had to leave as the agricultural depression forced folk to move to the Midlands and North where pretty grim job opportunities in the new factories were available. The trouble with these supernatural experiences is they happen unexpectedly and sometimes one is not really aware- as some of the experiences you recount, that something strange is happening until it is over. Some are very strange- and I certainly had one that took place over about 20 seconds which was utterly bizarre but at the time I knew it was happening. A very interesting film on a number of levels.

The gatehouse would have been flanked by walls that were all slighter but a lot of the red sandstone structures are much later, and in the 1860 there was a huge amount of remodelling. But yes, Kenilworth and Corfe were beyond recognition, sadly. Glad you enjoyed the video for sure 🙏👻🙋‍♀️

@@ghostcasebook1266 I would say that you having a RU-vid channel about ghosts make you predisposed to how you interpreted your experience...William was the Manager when I was there doing my university placement year and I spent lots of time with him, including a few time in his families apartment, and he loved the stories that were connected to Dunster Castle as they were all great marketing tools....I also knew Jackie and the grounds keeping team at the time. Many of the stories you have referred to in your video were ones that we all told to visitors and press enquiries and also leaned heavily into when we did the ghost tours around Hallowe'en. There is absolutely no verifiable, scientific evidence of ghosts and I can confirm that in the whole year I spent working (in all parts of the castle and grounds) and living onsite (the old nursery in the Salvin Tower was converted to a 2 bedroom apartment for student placements) I never once experienced, or heard of anyone else experiencing, anything inexplicable.

(I didn't actually cry just then, I admit 😅) So it's been really lovely to also get to see all the castles and fortresses _you_ have documented so far, on top of hearing all their ghost stories 😊 By the way, I've meanwhile asked my Melburnian friend if she knows about any haunted locations there, and she mentioned the Old Melbourne Gaol and Flinders Street Station. She may come up with some more after chatting with her hubby! 😉👍 And I'd once had a ghost getting very close also to _me_ , at my workplace eight, nine years ago, in our upstairs storage space: Some of my workmates and our store manager had already informed me about him a while ago and also had said that he was friendly, but he still spooked me quite a bit by slightly touching my hair one afternoon, while I was rummaging through boxes with electronic parts 😅

Love the video!! Amazing haunted castle! Great job! Do you think there is a connection between the crypt and the stone staircase? Instead of something on the stairs projecting into the crypt (through the small window) it’s something in the crypt projecting onto the stone stairs? Your encounter with the ghost sniffer could be two things: 1. A slightly disgruntled ghost annoyed by all the living beings intruding into it’s area. 2. A curious ghost sniffing the neck of a pretty lady. Were you wearing perfume? Both situations would be creepy. Again, I love this video. So many ghost encounters. @@ghostcasebook1266 You're welcome. It freaked me out! I felt very uneasy and had to leave. It was my cousin's bedroom. She told me the ghost of a woman appears at night. She smiles at her then vanishes. 👻They sold the house and moved out. lol!

Bloody hell, that photo is spooky, the way she is leaning, and head slightly tilted, doesn't look natural to me, i honestly think you captured a ghost, and i am still sceptical about them, but that photo gives me the eebi jeebies, brilliant video as usual, well done spooky girl 👻👍

Hey Robert and thank you so much. Well it was only as I made the video that I thought ‘what IS that?’ because I definitely didn’t notice anything at the time whatsoever and it was before we’d made it to the crypt so who knows. Glad you enjoyed the video for sure and thank you kindly, my friend 👻🙏🙋‍♀️

So fascinating. My family pent a yearn the UK in 1983 but even though we frequented loads of National Trust buildings, we never got as far as Dunster castle. Such a beautiful place. As for your experience, I don't blame you for being freaked out. That would have sent more than tingles up the spine for sure. I feel so sad for the 7ft giant. Just because he was tall, yet these days it isn't a crime. One day when I finally return to the UK, I want to have a good look around and spend a lot of time looking through thee beautiful historical places. You are so very lucky to have history that can still be shared.

Yes Dunster is an amazing castle but it is a bit under the radar as such. The incident I experienced was odd and freaked me out but I really enjoyed my time at the castle for sure. The oubliette is creepy; to stand in there knowing there are skeletons beneath you is strange! 👻🙏🙋‍♀️

What an interesting day out you had Nicole! I love places like that full of History & Stories. In your picture with the strange unknown "Figure" both my husband & I see it but to us, it's not a Figure it is a Person. The interesting thing, is I watched this whole Film on my Laptop in my room, which is actually a small Spare Bedroom I use as a Study & Office. I watched the bit about your uncomfortable experience, then about your mysterious shape. As you were zooming in, I very quickly noticed something there, the closer the picture went, the more solid it became. I rewatched it a couple of times & then thought about it. I wondered if perhaps my Mind had been prewarned there was something there so that's what I saw rather than looking at it without knowing there was something I should see. So, I went to my Husband, who was in the Room that we use as a semi Library come Computer Room. I must point out that those 2 rooms are on Opposite sides of the House, you would need to have the Volume up to Full to even notice a sound from either Room to the Other. While it is a Bungalow, between the two rooms you would need to go through a 20ft Sitting Room, a Dining Room, the Kitchen & 2 Hallways to get to the other Room. So he wouldn't have heard your Narration. I got up the Video, got it to the bit in the film with you looking into the Room on the " Opposite side of the Rope". Left the Sound off. Sat him in front of it & let it run. At about 39:00 you talked about the Guide you had spoken to & at about 40:00 you were zooming to the "Figure" . Both of us saw the same thing at the same time approx. 40:6. Looking into the Doorway, Slightly to the Left & behind the Chair with the Red Upholstered Cushion, there is the Figure of a Person & we compared what we were seeing, we differed on 1 Aspect only. I said it was a Woman wearing a Long Dark Greyish Dress, Minus the Apron & Mop Cap from the 18th or 19th Century, you would expect a Senior Servant to Wear. It wasn't quite Victorian in Style, although it had long Sleeves it wasn't the Mutton Type with long tight Cuffs & Fuller to the Shoulder Tops. The Woman was older, with very Tousled Shorter Hair, as though it had been rubbed though by hands. You can see the lighter face, but not the Features well enough to describe. Dave saw it as an older Man wearing a Collarless Shirt & loose fitting Jacket Dark in colour, neither of us saw feet or Legs. The Bright Blob towards the top of the Frame is showing above the Persons left shoulder as they're facing you, their left hand is visible as the lighter blob above where the Chair & table sit the right hand appears to be holding a shape thicker than a Broom handle but the same shape, what it's the handle off you cant see, the protruding decoration on the shoulder of the Chair hides that but the handle is seen to that point. The head of the person makes it seem they are stooped, which is probably what gives us the feeling of age. What I find even more interesting, is how your Voice Changed when you were talking about the Guide you Spoke to being in front of the rope. It was very Shaky & fearful as if you'd received a Severe fright. Now, I would assume, you had filmed this prior to going to the Crypt. In the Crypt you were badly frightened. I don't think that was solely to do with the Sigh or Sniff, it was also the knowledge only you had heard it & that you had had a feeling of unease & there was someone in the Bat room. From how you describe it, it bought to my mind something I had read about. When I was doing Research for the War of the Roses, Sir James Luttrell was one of the Main Figures who died in the 2nd Battle of St Albans 1461. A Staunch Lancastrian, he was Stripped of all his Land & Wealth by the Yorkist Victors. One of his Properties was Dunster Castle & it was Given the The Herberts, a Yorkist Family from the North. The Luttrell family regained Dunster 24 years later when Lancastrian Henry Vll came to the Throne in 1485. There was a Short Paragraph concerning Dunster Castle, it was badly looked after while in Yorkist Hands, used to Garrison Men as Guards against the Return of Henry Tudor From France, with a French Mercenary Army. The Men of the Garrison were known to have Drunken Bouts lasting 2 or 3 Days where Local Women were abducted & Gang Raped, sometimes killed. A number of Charges were bought against them & there remains some Documents of Evidence in Official Sources. There were several Reports of abuse that what you describe would fit. Remember these would be rough & Crude Men. Perhaps what you encountered could be one of those Soldiers. However,I have heard it said before, that sometimes, in a place where there had been Great Suffering &/or Deaths, that place itself absorbs a memory, then the Memory can be rerun over & over again, not just of 1 but of many. Places where that has been reported include Auschwitz Buildings, the Bastille, & Bedlam. Even when the buildings themselves have been demolished, that Memory remains. I've never experienced such a thing, but maybe you have. I know one thing though, if that sound as you describe it, wouldn't have come from outside, for the Sound to be heard as clearly as you say it was, it would've had to be that Loud, there was no way Mr GC didn't hear it too. Besides, what would have made that sound innocently, perhaps an Asthmatic Attack, but the sufferer wouldn't be able to make that long Sigh Sound & certainly not from the volume it would have to have been. I wouldn't be surprised if you're a Sensitive, after all the time you spend on the subject, you're seeing & hearing things yourself, you wouldn't be the First. You can get help to learn to Focus but if you want to do that get help from a reputable Person, it can be dangerous otherwise. This was another Exceptional Video Nicole, Thanks.

Wow thank you so much for such an in depth comment. I appreciate this very much. I will go back and look at the footage to see if I can spot what you have seen. I agree, I can’t think why a person on the steps would be motivated to make such strange breathy sounds. if I head a person out of breath from climbing the stairs, I would understand but this sounded very direct and also very deliberate. I think that is the scariest thing to be honest! It felt like it was aimed at me, I suppose. 🙏👻🙋‍♀️
