It wasn't always in the cycle you see today. Lake Lugert (some call it Lake Altus) when I was growing up used to be fairly full all year round. Boating, fishing, parties at Sandy Hill (now long gone) on weekends after school games were done; all this I remember. I think it was 1981 when the lake also froze over to the extent you could drive on it. Crazy memories.
I agree. In the late 70s, through the early 90s, when I was there, it was almost always full. We were there most weekends swimming and climbing. And it was the place to go when we skipped school. We lived in Olustee, so it wasn't very far to go. It looks so different now.
There is this one spot on top of either quartz mountain or the right mountain in the twin mountains but it has a sign built into the mountain that says that you’ll get a 200/2000 ticket if your on it. And a bit farther from that is a really old silo built into the mountain and it’s super cool.
Not gonna lie, I saw stuff to flip in this video. Cool shots from now and back then. Great info, love the drone work. That's cool about the lake being down and seeing the remnants of the town. Bet a metal detector would be interesting around that area.
I was stationed at Altus AFB Jan 1975 - Oct 1978. Bought an old boat with a Johnson 75 HP engine and skied Lake Altus probably ten times a year. Later, mu old boss retired in Blair which is the big metropolis between Altus and the lake.
On the back side of the lake there is a spot that when the water gets low enough you can see the top of houses and there was a rumor that a child drowned and when divers went looking for that child they seen a huge fish as big as a bus so no one will swim in that part anymore
