The Giant Caiman That Bit Harder Than T. Rex - Purussaurus

The Amazon is definitely home to some animals you would not want to run into, like the Anaconda or Jaguar, but the Amazon is actually surprisingly tame today than it was during the Miocene, as back then you had guys like the Purussaurus roaming around. This was a terrifying predator that was the largest caiman to ever exist, and one of the largest crocodilians period. It also had a unique skull that was almost shaped like a square and granted it one of the most deadly bites the world has ever seen.

Well regarding terrestrial crocodiles, crocodilians. There were three groups known to be present during the Cenozoic, the sebecids, planocraniids, and terrestrial mekosuchines. Based on phylogenetic studies, Sebecids we’re terrestrial notosuchians crocodylomorphs that were closely related to baurusuchids. And the planocranids such as boverisuchus based on the newest phylogenetic studies show Planocraniidae to be within Crocodylia. And the terrestrial mekosuchines such as quinkana based on phylogenetic studies to be apart of crocodyloidea. So the mekosuchines and planocranids such as quinkana and boverisuchus are terrestrial crocodiles, while sebecids are terrestrial crocodylomorphs. But still called land crocodiles, as reasons as other have mentioned. Also though alligatorids like purussaurus would be more commonly be called what it’s closely related to as.
