The Giants of Caddo Lake
Biologists continue their battle against giant salvinia, an invasive aquatic plant that threatens Texas lakes and fisheries. To protect Caddo Lake from devastation, they are enlisting the help of local conservation groups and some very special insects.

Being a local I can tell you that before the spraying began the fishing was amazing, since the fishing has fallen off significantly we need a heavy restocking especially in bass that lake will absolutely blow forks record out of the water, secondly becareful not to kill off the vegetation we need the grass to filter the water to keep the lake clear. Last I do adopt and rehabilitate wildlife

They kill hydrilla and Lilly pads they need to only kill salvinia.Fishing has gone way down hill since they started spraying every single piece of grass they see salvinia or not. Some cypress trees get sprayed and limbs die off.Caddo would've of been the best lake in the world if they didn't spray so much.I've seen them spray hydrilla and Lilly pads and cypress trees, they say it only kills salvinia 🤦‍♂️

Disappointed in this video. Should have addressed the impacts of spraying herbicides into t he lake's waters? What chemicals are used? How do they affect the biota of the lake? Are there health hazards re: the fish & wildlife and people eating the fish? I'm not saying the herbicide use isn't necessary or the best course of action but Texas parks & wildlife should confront this issue transparently & head on. Invasive aquatic species taking over the water bodies is a huge problem Much thanks to the people using the biological controls and to everyone working on this problem.

A lot of the decrease in Salvania in 2021 was mainly do to the freeze which killed a lot of the salvania, which was followed by very high water levels to help push the dead salvania out of the lake, into 12 mile bayou…

I remember building a fence along the state line to keep it on the Louisiana side as much as possible. We would go out to the fence everyday and dip out the plant with nets and dispose of it in black trash bags.

Does poison kill the cypress trees?

The problem I had with information is we had a major freeze and high water till June last year. That actually had a greater impact. Open up sloughs and minor cuts to get backwater area to open up. Combined spraying with enhancing natural cycles of floods needs to be emphasized.

Need to also clear out the current lanes (not just the boat roads) to help move this stuff along during high water. For such a precious resource, Caddo is way under-managed. Certainly appreciate all the efforts to contain the GS, but come on Texas, take care of Caddo!

I have seen the air boats spraying round up, howdafuq is that safe, when there is much safer options.

Wouldn’t physical removal of the plants in the worst areas be a more natural and safer option for the wildlife ecosystem than herbicides or weevils? Surely there’s some kind of equipment that could rip it up? I would think herbicides could produce long term problems.

It's usually spread by hitchhiking on boats that have been in lakes with giant salvinia and haven't been cleaned properly. That's the main source of contamination, but it can also be spread by some aquatic mammals and migratory birds.
