The Giants You Can't See From The Ground

We're in the Atacama! And we only got in a single massive fight with one family during filming, so spirits are high. Nothing like dressing down strangers to boost the general vibe.
After our opener in Santiago, we've decided to release the Chile episodes North to South. As we drove the length of the country (twice) while filming this series, the videos cover a span of nearly four thousand kilometers. It was a lot of time in a car, mostly in a desert, but it was worth it. Hope you like the episode!

Thanks to everyone who asked about our Patreon. I'll put out a full video when I get the time, but for those who want to jump the gun and get on board from the start, here's the link: www.patreon.com/rareearth It means a huge deal that so many have asked us to start an account. I never thought anyone would watch these videos, let alone support them.

Rare Earth You are one of my favourite places to visit. I can relate to many of your places visited in Asia as I work in Malaysia now. Having visited Laos, Cambodia and living in Thailand I can relate to many of your videos and especially your missus bitten by a monkey as a friend of mine was bitten by a dog. He had to get treatment. Many dogs here can carry rabies.

The little comment in at the end about you losing it on the guy who walked on the giant intrigues me almost as much as the video itself. It's a stramge thing isn't it? You don't worship the moon giant, neither do you protect other peoples hallowed ground from desecration. Like you said yourself in the video. The people who worshiped the giant are all gone by now. Yet you and Francesco were almost ready to fight a complete stranger because he dared to walk on speciffic patch of rock. Despite your lack of faith in the moon giant and despite having presented yourself as rather cautious towards most religion the giant is still hallowed ground for you. And those who dare tread on it or don't show it respect need to be repremended. Maybe it is belief in the importance of retaining history, of telling a story or of not forgetting. Maybe it is somethig completely different but it is still interesting to me to think about especially as someone who considers himself not very religious. Keep up the great work : )

There are new lines in that desert. A long, straight line and a large letter G, both next to a hummingbird. They were put there by Greenpeace in what was, essentially, another marketing campaign. Those lines may well have scarred the geoglyphs forever. It is hard not to realize why these symbols of another time are worth protecting from our culture with blood, if necessary.
@NeilSonOfNorbert
@NeilSonOfNorbert 3 года назад
one could see it as having been hallowed by the hard work and care given to it, that people thousands of years ago took the hard effort to write it in stone and that human effort deserves at least respect.

@@NeilSonOfNorbert Ikr? In a universe that's mostly hydrogen dust, these lines exist. Being areligious should mean that you respect the value of what's actually real, not that you don't care about anything just because you don't expect a baby with wings to slay you for it.

Haha, reminds me of when we were in Cancun during sea turtle nesting season; several of us were out on the beach quietly watching the turtles when a couple came tramping through with their cell phones out, seemingly ignorant of what was going on. Someone very quickly took them aside. Great video, as usual.

Re: The beginning - to me, the phrase "it's not written in stone" only has meaning BECAUSE we have actual important things written in stone. It implies "the thing we're referring to _isn't_ important and unchangeable, _unlike_ things that are actually written in stone." And I *HAVE* heard the reverse. When trying to change something, but for various reasons it can't be changed "sorry, the specifications for that are already written in stone."

I kind of don't mind if people 1000 years from now find the Coca Cola logo. If our time is seen as a prosperous time where we had the capacity to think about vanity on a large scale instead of divinity - I think that is good.

Coca Cola isn't a sign of prosperity. It's a cheap drink that causes diabetes and whatnot that people who can't afford anything better drink.
@Abigail-hu5wf
@Abigail-hu5wf 6 лет назад
But think about the times before us. It's a sign of prosperity BECAUSE it's so cheap. The ingredients in it couldn't possibly be affordable on a mass scale in any society other than a global one. What we think of as cheap crap now would cost potentially hundreds of equivalent dollars a few hundred years before.

I feel like I'm always a couple steps behind you. You put out many of the Laos episodes about a month before I went with my brother. I was living in southwest China at the time. You're in Peru now, or were recently, and I'll be living in Cusco for a few months beginning in June. My hippie brains tells me it's like there are little hotbeds of energy that we're being attracted to. If you end up in Portugal a month before I go to live (planned about 8 weeks there) I'ma be weirded out. From the pace of the southeast Asia episodes, I suspect you'll be in South America for quite a while though. I guess I could just FINALLY support someone whose content I really enjoy on Patreon and find out your plans...

Planted on a hillside, 120 meters wide, the logo can be seen by passing cars for quite a while. Stepping back through earlier Google Earth images, in addition to "Coka Cola," we also see "125 AÑOS" -- that is, after 2009. Briefly before then, it was "100 AÑOS." Fortunately, enough time will one day pass to erase the mess humans are making. Thank god for geology.

I'm sorry, I did a poor job in explaining. Right now our digital lives are not being stored on disks or harddrives anywhere. They're being stored on servers all over the world. Google datacenters have EXABYTES of data storage. They are built in the United States, South America, Asia, and Europe. Even solar storms cannot take them out because solar storms only strike one side of the planet at a time. This doesn't include all the data stored on private computers. Take a film for example, I dunno, 1979's The Warriors. Think of all the private home computers that have backup copies of that movie on their harddrive, all the people illegally downloading that movie on Bittorrent, all the dataserver space people have privately uploaded that movie to their RU-vid account. Try getting rid of all of those. It would take a global thermonuclear disaster wiping out all of civilization to do it and then your biggest problem isn't storing data anymore but species extinction. Our most personal information, photographs, films, TV shows, Facebook pages, Twitter accounts, RU-vid comments, are being stored for eternity. The only way to stop this is delete the source before it's backed up, lock them behind passwords or annihilate all of humanity.

When we say, "it's not written in stone", we usually say that because we are implying that edits are welcome to the document. When we convert the contract/agreement/etc. to stone, then it's because we want to last forever and be unchangeable... I've never heard anyone say, "nothing is written in stone" to apply across the board.....

I find it interesting as modern wealthy people can afford to leave these sorts of monuments for fun. But we never imply it could be the case for the people of the past. Like, some of the elder pharaohs in Egypt decided "lol, I'm going to build a pyramide and pretend it has some deep meaning just to see in my afterlife what my descendats would make of this joke" and built a small easy-to build pyramide. And an old anecdote for last: 1970s, USSR and USA are competing for space achievements. A secretary runs into the US president's office: - Sir, the communists have landed on the Moon! - Okay, let us see what are they up to. ... - Sir, they've began to paint the Moon red! - We shall wait. ... - Sir they've painted more than half of the Moon red, what are you going to do? - Wait and see. ... - Sir, the Soviet Union has painted the whole Moon, now it's all red. Your orders? - Now launch our rocket there and write "Coca-Cola".
