No not a gift but an absolute nightmare! I’m glad I never had children as it’s hereditary, I would hate them to feel the torture of school that I had and I’m only mildly affected.
@PeteLuther

I have 3 young boys and often wonder if they will have it and how I'd feel about that as it was a nightmare for me too in school and for so many like you. I feel your pain as there is so much that makes life difficult daily even for me now at 43 and being a now confident person. I still believe however that the symptoms can be worked on and stratagies put in place to make it easier and that we can work through the trauma of school and be a stronger person the other side but I definitely did not enjoy the proses. Also everyone has gifts regardless so focusing on them in my view is a good strategy to have. Thanks for your comments

Great video thank you. I have dyslexia I'm suffering all my life from it, in school, uni. I hate it when that stupid teacher ask me to read loud and my class mate never stop laughed at me. I have a good education on computer, I'm accountant I suffered to gain this qualifications. They sack me today because I'm slow and they bring super fast in my place, he had less qualifications and experience than me just because he is fast is that fair . Yes I'm slow I have big problem with time management I don't know where is the left and right but my brain's design to be deep thinker, finding solutions for problems and creative with things. I don't want to tell people in work that I'm suffering from dyslexia, I do not wanted to be treated as disabled person. I'm suffering and struggling. We need right and law to protect us in school at work we need organisation to stand behind our back.

Thanks for your coments. Sounds like your having a tough time of it. Dyslexia does make me slow at things to and struggle with time managment. I have to work harder than most to get what I need done and it can but tough. Everyone I work with knows I'm dyslexic and that gives them understanding of me. People will always find a way of putting you down. Know thst your good at what you are, concentrate on that and get yourself back out there. That's what I think anyway.

I am a 63 year old male. My parents thought an knew that I was different than other children. They had the money to send me to many phycologist. I remember crying while being drove to see these specialists, telling them that there was nothing wrong with me. These specialist did me more damage than good. They told my parents that I was not trying, lazy, and so on. In my teens, I was out of control. To the point I did not want to be on this earth anymore. My father would get so angry, when I could not remember, the things he was trying to teach me in the way he had be taught. I did not finish high school, but did later in life. I got involved with drinking and drugs very young. I look back and can only say it was a grace in god that I made it to where I am today. My dad told me that I was going to end up being a ditch digger. Which I guess that was the lowest type of a job at that time. The thing I want to say, is that at my age. I have realized my ability to make incredible things, just by visualizing whatever in my mind with out directions, blue print, a plan, nor even using measurements. It is amazing to myself and others that see, and understand that I made the item, in the manner that I spoke of. We really have went down a very difficult road, to be seen for what talents dyslexic individual hold inside of them😊.

I struggled at school and uni, sometimes bottom set in maths, sometimes top of the school in maths. I scrapped a Bachelors but now teach on Masters courses. As an engineer I struggled to check details and calculations, but pioneered 3D modelling because I could see it all in my mind. I’ve stammered all my life but am now a public speaker, even though I struggle to say my own surname. And remember other peoples’ names. Writing and spelling are hard and it takes me a long time, but I now have a best-selling engineering text book (with LOTS of pictures). Dyslexia is a gift, as long as you can focus your life on those gifts and avoid the areas where you struggle. It’s taken a long time to get there though.

I feel like I'm dyslexic, but I have not been diagnosed and mental problems were not widely recognized in the part of the world I live in. I was sent to speech therapist while in school and I learned to speak later than other kids normally did and my parents did think that there won't be anything good of me because they thought something is wrong with me. I went to university and got the highest grades of all of the class when it came to engineering classes and now as adult and working in software engineering I can solve problems that are difficult for most of the colleagues I work with, but often times I have trouble to speak about them because I oftenly can't find the correct words and I'm not sure how to this day I should communicate with them about the problems even though english feels like it is better language for me. This problem has crushed my confidence to the lowest point very often, but I know deeply that I am capable of solving difficult problems, atleast in the field I work in. Thanks for the video, very re-affirming :)
@PeteLuther
@PeteLuther 2 года назад
Problem solving is an awsome gift to have. I think learning to articulate that take practice and confidence, with maybe confidence being more important. I sometimes have to say 2-3 words I know are wrong to get to the right on which can confuse people so I have to explain how my brain works. Being confident in not being able to do certain things has been a game changer for me. I have found that people are quite understanding when I've explained myself to them. They can then be patient with me as I find the right words.

I’ve been told my superpower is to memorize where people have put their belongings. My brain thinks in pictures and I remember where everything is, so if someone forgot where they put something I’ll usually know, even if it’s in some random place like under the couch. And speaking of pictures, even though I struggle with letters and numbers, I have no issue with Kanji (I’m studying japanese) as it’s basically pictures already. My teachers in japan were surprised that i wasn’t struggling with it like most other westerners.

I'm dyslexic, but it always makes me shudder when the description of super power is used, because to me it's use always seems like a sugar coated prop or walking stick used by others to placate the individual. I also feel that this can be potentialy damaging in that it can serve as a destination because of an over emphasis in one direction. Resulting in other important areas of development being ignored. The other danger is that for the people trying to make this assertion to the individual, that it is the fact it makes them feel that there doing good for the individual because it is an easy to get a smile on the face with out developing the deeper understanding of the individuals needs. A bit like giving a child candy or a new toy because there crying but not asking why there crying in the first place. Yes there are things that I do naturally or my coping strategies are more weighted towards doing but there are things I struggle with. The things I can do doesn't make me any better that the next person because everyone has there own skill sets. I do get people asking me "how do/did you do that" because they feel that they can't do the same, and my instinctive response it to try and navigate there clouds of self doubt and encourage them to try as well themselves. Yes, ask me to change a wheel on a car because you don't know how? Be ready to get your hands dirty as I guide you through the process. My belief is that it is better to teach people to there skill sets and from those develop the strategies needed to manage the tasks they find more difficult.

Finding passion can take time. I believe everyone dose have one and it always revolves around a cause. The question I like as a starting point is what makes you cry and what makes you happy. Ohhhh now im understanding how i can easily imagine seeing myself putting together something after doing it maybe one of twice.. then i would dream it late at night like studying and i go to work and feel like I’ve gotten better at what i want to get better at. I used to be bullied not just by my peers but also by my family- specifically my father :”) i absolutely hated ELA and anything to do with reading or writing- but the only way to get through it Was by “getting better” and “conforming “, my dad would make fun of how i used to talk an whatnot so it was something i had to quickly “fix” However obv you can’t fix it, so i became incredibly paranoid over my spelling and i became incredibly conscious of other people’s mistakes. Im *diagnosed* with ADHD so i assumed that it was what made my life back then really rough- it still could be but dyslexia could also be present in the mix

Thanks for your comments.

@@PeteLuther Oh, it has definitely cause pain. It's also caused shame , insecurity, disrespect, depression, and a lot of other bad things. I hate dyslexia.

I think I might have Dyslexia ( did 8 yes out of 10 on the test ) + ADHD ( 100% on the tests). But what is weird is that I can't see with my mind's eye (Aphantasia). And still, I am an Artist/Animator/ Art director. My brain has a bug, I guess.

The minds eye thing is a theory from the book 'gift of dyslexia' by Davis. Worth checking out if you find out you are. We are all unique though and all have gifts so don't worry to much. Just keep moving forward.

Where can I get test done.

You will need to find a local educational psychologist who can test you. It's not cheep but worth it so you know. If your at school you can have a needs test which is not official but can help you get extra support at school. Let me know how you get on.
