Kaiser Permanente Chairman and CEO George C. Halvorson discusses the gift of walking. Discover how walking 30 minutes a day, five days a week can help reduce the rate of diabetes, strokes, heart disease, hypertension and more. The benefits of walking are good for all, and can also help combat breast and prostate cancer. Beyond the physical benefits, walking can have a major positive impact on depression by creating positive neurochemicals.
And you don't have to be a regular at the gym to get the benefits. You can fit walking into your daily routine and experience the benefits with shorter walks throughout the day. The benefits are multiple--and it's easy and free to do. Walking is our gift. Walking is our strength. Walking makes us strong. So let's walk.

A few years ago I called a friend and confided to him I was very depressed...he told me to meet him at the dock in the morning...I thought he'd have some pills or drugs...nope...we went walking...and talking...he promised me if I walked every day my depression would ease...how true!!..I've never had a minute of depression since I started walking!!

5 years ago I had a triple bypass open heart surgery. The cardio surgeon advised me to walk and so I started walking 3 days after the surgery. Last February, at the age of 55, I walked up the highest mountain in my country (4095 meters). Will keep on walking 🚶‍♂️ 🙂

I was suffering from very bad anxiety and had tremors and attacks. I have cured it mostly by walking and drinking tea. I cut back on soda too. I don't drink coffee either. Walking is a wonder drug and it's the best thing for you and is free to do. I walk between 3-4 times a day half hour to an hour each depending on the weather. I also mall walk when it's too hot out or too cold. I'm telling you it works. I sleep better now too. NO more drugs for me.

Walking has been my daily pill for the last 2 months. I cant wait to go out and walk every single day at 5 pm in the cool of the day. It's as if i grind away all the toxins in my body as well as negative thoughts. Pity that I discovered it so late at age 61. Yet, it's never too late.

4 years ago, I had open heart surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm. My surgeon made me promise to walk every day. I'm still walking every day. I walk at a little over 4 mph.

I am 75. Two years ago I was bedbound in a care home for end of life care (!) Medical support was poor, so I did my own thing. Did a lot of research and started an exercise regime. Learned to walk again and walked about 2 miles a day in the corridors. Net result I came home after six months. Now I walk regularly about 4 miles every day in the country (even during covid-19). About 30 miles a week.

My doc told me to walk 20 min a day. I bought a treadmill and I've been walking 35 min. Combined with an improved diet, I feel better now than I did 10 years ago.
