She NAILED this role. She kept your eyes glued to the screen. The marketing wasn't enough. Roomey was their secret ingredient. They just needed time for more ppl to discover the movie and they would've been salivating for the 2nd. Kind of like how the movie "less than zero" had lower ratings, but later became a cult classic. They made a HUGE mistake replacing her.
I never heard of this movie until 2020. And yes...Rooney nailed the role. Especially when she punished the bastard who took advantage of Salander's medical history. Of course Salander's 'advisor' actor also nailed that minor role. He knows how to play the charactor of thoroughly disgusting people.
@@misterwallace3479 yeah me too! Even being familiar with all the plots, the movie is still so immersive and intriguing. That's also why I feel so pity about the following one...
Rooney had such a girl next door image and that was all changed for this character and what a transformation it was. That’s what acting is all about being someone else and becoming a character. Rooney Mara really was Lisbeth Salander.
Rooney can convey so much emotion and speak volumes without ever actually saying a single word, and I love that. Her portrayal of Lisbeth Salander was outstanding! The roller coaster ride of Lisbeth's experience in this book is heart-wrenching, but on screen Rooney made Lisbeth seem real. Her dedication to the character brought the film to a whole other level. It instantly became one of my all-time favorite films, and about 90% of the reason why was due to Rooney's performance.
@@angelicaduncan9694 Ask the studio. They're the ones who decided to hit the "reboot" button after this didn't make enough money at the box office to their liking.
Because they didn't finish the trilogy. This was the first one. The films about Lisbeth Salander they have made later on are not a part of the trilogy. They are not written by Stieg Larsson, whom passed after creating the Millennium trilogy. I read the books and saw the Swedish films first, with Noomi Rapace. She will probably always be THE Salander for me (Noomi), but I did enjoy this adaption and loved Rooneys take on her. I have been a huge fan of Ronney Mara ever since!
Watching this masterpiece of a movie once again and watching this behind the scenes makes me cry with tears of rage. Not getting the full Fincher Millenium trilogy is a crime against cinema.
seeing who Fincher brings into his films really gives a great insight as to why his films feel so authentic. I hate Hollywood bs, but these people all seem so genuinely dedicated to the project.
Dear GOD I fucking love this film in all ways!! Sooo incredible. Beautiful attention to detail and iconic work. Love the costume documentary as well, gorgeous layers.
i read the book first and just found out that there was a movie about it, i checked out immediately. she was exactly as how my mind depicts of lisbeth's appearance. i was shocked and disappointed when she did not took over the role for the girl who played with fire 💔
I love how Rooney gets blamed for this. She wanted to do it, kept pushing for the sequel but for reasons out of her control the second film (American) was not done. I wish she and Fincher could have been given the green light by the studio for all three.
Still one of Rooney's most amazing transformation, she literally disappeared in this role and this was just right after the Nightmare remake which was a flop but she managed to get recognition for her role as Lisbet and even got nominated at the Oscars, total well deservedly!
Such a shame that Fincher hasn't wanted to finish this series of stories. As well as MindHunter... He really needs to finish both. As only Fincher can.
I 1st saw Rooney Mara in "Side Effects" and she blew me away. After seeing her "Lisbeth Salanda" I am convinced that she will go on to be a major actor in cinema.
idk how many times i’ve watched this movie.. it might just be my comfort movie as weird as it sounds lol. as a fan of the books i felt like rooney mara was perfect for this role. i’m really bummed they didn’t make the rest of the trilogy with her.
Lisbeth is fascinating and even though little Ms Doritt is great on Part 2 I am disappointed Rooney did not do Part 2 or will Part 3 because Rooney is Lisbeth. Carey Mulligan & scarlet Johansson tried for it too but Rooney was the one who makes you believe that she can do all of it and you cheer her on. I thought she would do 2&3 so I did not mind the end but now I watch it over &over hoping this time Mikael (Craig)will choose her over Erica (Wright.)😔😟😫😭
It’s interesting how much more outgoing and rough around the edges Rooney Mara appears to be in these interviews and Q & A’s for Dragon, yet in the junkets for Carol, she was very demure.
This film was outstanding, and even after watching the other version and having loved it, Rooney Mara brought Lisbeth to life here, in a way that I found to be immediately fascinating. One of my favorite scenes, are THE RAPE SCENE and THE REVENGE SCENE because they made such good display of her inner strength and what a damned good thinker this girl is. Revenge is not my thing...but RECIPROCITY is. I believe in the value of reciprocity. In simpler terms, I give praise where praise is due and I give shit where shit is due. Watching her give back the shit practiced on her, complete with her own list of "future terms and conditionalities" , was brilliant and pretty damned hardcore. It is at this precise point that the viewer develops a whole new level of respect for this character. I've watched this film about 3 or 4 times now.
This was one of my favorite complex black movies, (Brazil is the other one). I was glad to run into this thread and see Rooney's beautiful face without the crap around it and the workings that go into it. As a critical Fashion Designer I really enjoyed the background stuff and seeing the real Rooney. Good show David. Much better than the original movie.
I love that moment at 33:48 where Rooney take that thing out Daniel’s hand and he doesn’t even notice. As a movie actor people on-set are always plucking at your clothes or your hair and you just stop even being aware of it.
For me this is David Fincher's best movie; and he should have made a follow up - When Lisbeth Salander throws that beautiful leather jacket into the garbage and the movie ends I feel so desolate.
I came here looking to find out who Rooney is because Lisbeth is a wicked character. I just watched this film last night. Sometimes I can't watch a popular movie out the gate because of all the noise around it. I just want to watch - me and the art. This movie blew me away. Lisbeth (and Rooney) blew me away. And all the subtext looks at her, thinking they knew who she was, automatically disrespecting her. Always trying to undermine her. Thinking she was nothing. When really, she was everything. This made me want to watch everything Rooney has done..
Rooney nailed this part. She is so captivating and takes over the screen. They could of done without the rape scene but I guess that’s crucial for the character.
Now 2024, I saw this movie with my kids at the movie theater. Son was 17 and daughter 21.. and it was an uncomfortable few minutes during the counselor creep sex scenes. But wow.. what a performance and what a well done movie.
I think Mikael had a connection with Lisbeth as a partner in crime. Once the mystery had concluded he came back to earth and resumed the relationship he had put on pause in Stockholm. Meanwhile, Lisbeth really trusted Mikael and was more emotionally invested. Mikael didn't know about Lisbeth's past abuse so he never knew how significant it was to gain her trust. That's how I understood it anyway...I was also heartbroken at the end :')
@ BigBass255 - it’s all in the book. Salander falls in love with Mikael and isn’t sure how to handle it but then makes up her mind to tell him, on her way to find him she sees him with Erika walking arm in arm and she feels a fool and gets angry with herself. Book 2, The girl who played with fire, explains what she does next.
In a weird way she was replaying her sexual abuse with her father (the one she tried to burn alive) Daniel Craig's character Mikael was basically like a father figure to her, which is probably what triggered those unhealthy feelings of attraction. (At least that's what I realized after seeing the movie. I haven't read the book, but her being sexually abused by her father isn't explicitly mentioned in the movie.)
Knowing Rooney Mara primarily from "Carol", it's hard to believe it's the same person. lol As she was just as convincing as quiet, wide eyed Therese. Quite the chameleon...
The look is superb, but I have no idea how the costume designer could think that character could fade into the background at anything but a hot punk convention. She even tries to shrink in the most conspicuous way possible.
Regarding that t-shirt Lisbeth wears that says "F*ck you, you f*cking f*ck"... I didn't see this film when it first came out, so I find it really funny and remarkably coincidental that the *one* random t-shirt I took a picture of while in NYC with my sister (in 2012) was a black t-shirt hanging outside a little street shop, and that shirt had those exact words. My sister was like, "Don't take a picture of that!" but it just made me laugh in a dark way and I felt this weird need to photograph it. Cut to years later when I finally saw this film and noticed Lisbeth's t-shirt, and I was like, "Oh my god... it's the shirt!" Which made me love it (and Lisbeth) even more. I love hearing about all these behind-the-scenes stories about how they all brought the character to life. Very cool.
@@wuckf1t open objectification is weird but closed objectification is fine? Wtf. Sounds like what they say about guys fron England being straight prisses that think "openly objectification" is weird. Sorry but a real man speaks the truth.
Only found out the other day that She and Joaquin have a little boy named River. Kind of hit me a little, don't know why, but I'm glad they are together.
For anyone who dont know books even swedish trilogy films must be this remake a liitle bit confusing, without circumstancies of hole story behind. Anyway, it is a very good flm work, it's just a shame they dont made it to the end.
