Georgina's death caused much public sympathy, and a very large crowd attended her funeral. After her death, her husband married his mistress, Elizabeth. It was also after her death that the true extent of her gambling debts became clear. Some biographers have set the total debt at more than ₤100,000 which was an astronomical sum in an age when a parlor maid generally could expect around ₤20/per annum. The duke made little effort to deal with them and it would fall to the 6th duke, her son, to settle her debts after he succeeded to the title. This process took many years despite the family being among the wealthiest in the kingdom.

I'm so glad you have reported on this lady! I vaguely knew the basics but not the details especially that she was a Spencer. Her life was remarkably similar to Diana's, though Diana had an unhappy childhood that left her craving love. The thing about arranged marriages is they only work if neither party's affections are engaged. Great video! Thank you.

I was late watching the movie “The Dutches” at first I didn’t know it was a true story until the end of the movie. I loved the movie a lot that it even made me search the name of the characters in the movie and I read a lot about them and looked at pictures etc. Is sad to know the dark truth in her life she didn’t deserve that at all but sadly that’s how it was, I love watching this video and other videos that tells me more about her life!

She is considered to be the first Celebrity in England in an age that invented the term. I read a biography of her several years before the film 'The Duchess' was made about her life - with a fatally miscast Keira Knightly failing miserably to match a brilliant Ralph Fiennes. I fail to see the resemblance between Georgiana and Diana, the late Princess of Wales. Diana was damaged by her childhood and this affected her marriage to a man far older than she was. That said, she pursued Charles after he dated her sister, Sarah and was encouraged by her grandmother Lady Fermoy who happened to be the then Queen Mother's best friend. Just as Diana was pushed into an essentially arranged marriage, so was Charles by his domineering father, the late Duke of Edinburgh. Both wanted to pull out of the wedding but neither had the support to do so. They would have needed help given the weight of expectations from both their families and an entire country of 45 million plus people (as we were then). Diana's marriage was a tragedy for both parties, Georgiana's was a tragedy for her alone as her cold fish husband never seemed to have felt anything deeply enough for it to take on tragic proportions. George Cavendish was an appallingly selfish man in an age of self-centred men who still held onto the Medieval idea that women were to be wed, bed and provide heirs. The notion of a love-match was only just coming into vogue in Europe in the late 18th century amid the Aristocracy so these kinds of relationships were rare. For anyone interested in the rather more realistic version of Diana I would suggest Lady Colin Campbell's book, 'The Real Diana' for a real eye opener.

The book about Diana sounds like an interesting read. Although I have to be honest, I don't find her as fascinating as most people do. I'm sure she was a kind hearted lady though.

William Cavendish was a typical husband of the time, ignores his wife, takes a mistress then when his wife had an affair he was mad about it. It may sound unfair but it shows the difference of equality of men and women during that time.
@TheKingsofFrance
@TheKingsofFrance Год назад
I definitely agree. It was expected of kings to show their virility that way, but women, well, adultry on their end could lead to a bastard child gaining a title (if said adultry was not found out in time), which obviously was a big fear of men of the nobility.
