Mike Mangini hater here. The old DT is like you are with your girlfriend having sex for the first time. New DT is like you and your wife in the justice hall waiting for the divorce papers.
These songs are relentless on your stamina and timing. What a treat to be watching Glass Prison live and then immediately, without a break, Dying Soul starts...
@@fernandoolmedo2558 Exactly! These guys play their minds and souls out on every show... And they don't even pick "easier" songs to make things easier for themselves; they'll just play long and stamina draining songs the whole show, give or take a few songs that give them a bit of a rest.
@@fernandoolmedo2558 And not only that, Earth is only 35billions years old. The universe is still expanding starting from the Big Bang which started 120billions years ago.
For people who don't play the drums, they can't imagine the difficulty of these songs! I'm a woman and I've been playing drums for a very long time and my arms feel like rubber after just one of these songs!! and did you notice... THE GUY DOESN'T SWEAT???? argh!
If you think that was good... you should check out this Obscure band called Dream Theater. They aren't mainstream at all and only had one hit. But the transition between these songs called The Glass Prison and This Dying Soul is amazing. The even more beautiful thing about it is the fact that they actually transition between two cds. Cool band, check them out. Also their guitarist does these crazy things with the guitar... it's all like blblbluhblebleblblablubblablblalalolabalu.
I never really acknowledge how incredible he is. I mean I love DT and mike portnoy for a long time but still, that level of stamina and accuracy is mind blowing !
Saw them live once. My eyes were always fixed on Mike. He seemed to be the only one having fun, communicating with the audience. The others seemed only to focus on their playing, disregarding the audience.
Portnoy is fucking unique, and if you know any DT history you will recognize that many of the concepts, album covers, song covers, arragements, lyrics, production, marketing, song ideas, charisma, were from Portnoy.
The guy knew from day 1 what he wanted to do with the band. Makes you wonder how he never got burnt out! Score So Far has a lot of editing bonuses that were his ideas and it's just so much extra effort that not many bands will do for their fans.
@@l.e.bassdesign that would be Maddi 😂 he used to put plexiglass cover on the amps to protect the mesa boogie 😂😂 even if those are just props, and the real amps are on the back/side stage
He makes it seems so easy 👍 His drum tone is really good.... More feeling and more style than than mangini.... Although mangini himself is really a brilliant drummer in his own right.
I've listened to some DT with Mangini... the stumbling block is expecting DT with Portnoy... so far, I can't get into it... But Mangini is a monster on the drums. No average person can replace Portnoy. 100% respect for Mike Mangini
1:50 - is Mike sometimes standing up from the kit and still playing? I'm no drummer so often not sure exactly what I'm seeing, but always impressed with Mike(s).
Which concert was this? The description says "Live at Budokan" but that can't be right, since they obviously didn't play The Glass Prison at that gig. Either way it's awesome, and I love that they did that smooth transition between the tracks!
Dont understand why mike always play like that in concert. Dont like it. Is so different. Only the 25th anniversary and budokan concert are the exeption. A really good one.
Live at budokan 2017 there is many setlist from images and words album, plus some old song like hell's kitchen But it's rather hard to find the videos, because its just airing at local japan TV
From what I understood there are songs that got played a lot less often when Portnoy left, and I think 12-step suite songs are included in that vein. Could be wrong but that’s what it seemed like to me
Well when DT goes on an album tour they generally just play their new material and not their old songs... So I doubt MM has even performed either of these songs live
