See Part 2 for more historical details - In around 1600 James Cunningham, 7th Earl of Glencairn built the Glencairn Aisle and the monument it contains to himself, his wife Margaret Campbell and their eight children. Around 20 Cunninghams are buried in the crypt below. It was in serious disrepair in 1773 and was fully restored in 1846 by Sir Alexander Montgomerie Cunningham of Corsehill. Four smaller windows have been blocked oof and a barrel vault added that has removed the upper floor as indicated by the window in the gable end.
David Sewgal of Carel was the mason burgess or master mason and he left his mason's mark on a pillar. A mediaeval gravestone and window tracery from the old church are in the aisle. Other Cunningham memorials are also present. The aisle has been joined and separated from the church itself more than once.
