CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Michael (Al Pacino) takes a gun he hid in the bathroom and blows away his enemies, McCluskey (Sterling Hayden) and Sollozzo (Al Lettieri).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Popularly viewed as one of the best American films ever made, the multi-generational crime saga The Godfather is a touchstone of cinema: one of the most widely imitated, quoted, and lampooned movies of all time. Marlon Brando and Al Pacino star as Vito Corleone and his youngest son, Michael, respectively. It is the late 1940s in New York and Corleone is, in the parlance of organized crime, a "godfather" or "don," the head of a Mafia family. Michael, a free thinker who defied his father by enlisting in the Marines to fight in World War II, has returned a captain and a war hero. Having long ago rejected the family business, Michael shows up at the wedding of his sister, Connie (Talia Shire), with his non-Italian girlfriend, Kay (Diane Keaton), who learns for the first time about the family "business." A few months later at Christmas time, the don barely survives being shot by gunmen in the employ of a drug-trafficking rival whose request for aid from the Corleones' political connections was rejected. After saving his father from a second assassination attempt, Michael persuades his hotheaded eldest brother, Sonny (James Caan), and family advisors Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) and Sal Tessio (Abe Vigoda) that he should be the one to exact revenge on the men responsible. After murdering a corrupt police captain and the drug trafficker, Michael hides out in Sicily while a gang war erupts at home. Falling in love with a local girl, Michael marries her, but she is later slain by Corleone enemies in an attempt on Michael's life. Sonny is also butchered, having been betrayed by Connie's husband. As Michael returns home and convinces Kay to marry him, his father recovers and makes peace with his rivals, realizing that another powerful don was pulling the strings behind the narcotics endeavor that began the gang warfare. Once Michael has been groomed as the new don, he leads the family to a new era of prosperity, then launches a campaign of murderous revenge against those who once tried to wipe out the Corleones, consolidating his family's power and completing his own moral downfall. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards and winning for Best Picture, Best Actor (Marlon Brando), and Best Adapted Screenplay, The Godfather was followed by a pair of sequels.

One of the best scenes in a movie ever. Pacino has a huge task of not only showing the audience that he is nervous but making sure that Solozzo and McCluskey don't get suspicious. There are no subtitles cause at this point what they are saying doesn't matter. We know the plan, the only thing on our minds is "can he do it?". His body language, his nervous eyes darting down to the ground suggest doubt and fear. The anticipation grows more and more unnerving when michael comes back to the table. Solozzo speaks but michael doesn't hear it. You can see him psyching himself up for whats to come and as the train whistle blows louder and louder (not literally but in his mind),we see the unravelling of an innocent man as as he meets his ultimate destiny. . The one he tried so hard to escape.

There is a Documentary (which I believe can be found on RU-vid) in which Al Pacino reveals that it was known for weeks during the filming that he was going to be sacked. It was only when the Paramount Bosses saw the rushes of this very scene that they were finally convinced that Pacino was the right Actor for the role. Pacino maintains that this scene saved not only his job but it effectively made his career.

I really like to think this being the turning point in Michael's story arc and not Apollonia's murder later in Sicily. Her death merely cemented the change in Michael as a person which started here. There was no turning back after this.
@lunamilo2065
@lunamilo2065 Год назад
You’re right. In the book, Michael’s transformation begins with McCluskey punching him and ends with this scene. But fans love to romanticise this movie and hence believe Apollonia was the turning point. There was no going back to Civilian life after these restaurant murders. Michael volunteers not for Vito, but for the cop punching him. That’s why he shoots Solozzo first and only once but he shoots McCluskey, twice, in a deliberately unclean way to make him suffer before finishing him off.

He didn’t have to say a word. The eyes tell everything. When I first saw this trilogy I couldn't believe how Michael’s character could transition so intensely. From the youngest son of the Corleone family who seemed to not care about his family’s business at all, his older brothers still treating him like a boy, to becoming the most feared leader of the crime family, almost as if he was more feared than Vito. Pacino truly is a master of his craft.

I think he WAS more feared than Vito, especially in the second movie. However, just like Vito his power started waning once he got older, and in the 3rd movie it is extremely rocky and mostly just held up by the insane amount of money he has, because he tried to transition to FULLY legal, which wasn't possible for him.

If you look closely in Michael's eyes , not only is he showing nervousness but also he can't look Sollozzo straight in the eyes for more than a few miliseconds..I believe that's because he is so anxious about the idea of killing him and doing it at the right second. The only time he looks straight in his eyes for a second or two is the moment before he shoots him and you can see the hate and urge to shoot in his eyes just before he stands up. Brilliant acting by Al Pacino.

0:32 I am not sure, but from watching the Paramount+ Exclusive, "The Offer", I can say that the worrisome/surprised expression Al Pacino makes when looking for the gun was real; Coppola made the prop people put the gun a few inches above where Pacino thought the gun would be placed behind the toilet, so he would score that perfect expression.

The unique emotions Al Pacino displays in this scene to convince the audience that the character Michael Chorleone is nervous, scared and at the same time has the light of fire in his eyes to avenge the attempt made on his father to be murdered, is just brilliant to a point that audience don't realise. This is nothing but art of acting in a masterpiece like the movie itself. Al Pacino not only kills the role but also shows the pathway to new generation acting aspirants because Alfredo was very young during the production of the film. He truly is one of the greatest actors to stand in the history of Cinema.
@joeking5679
@joeking5679 3 года назад
he's good but if we're being honest, nearly all actors just get typecast into playing the characters their dispositions allow them to play. Pacino played the same kind of nervous energy antihero in scarface too. I am not of the opinion that there is as much acting range as many people want to think.

Notice buildup to the kill is what makes him nervous, whats interesting though is how cold he is actually doing the actual murders, Killing isn’t anything new to him because he’s done it before, but he’s nervous because he’s never done it like this before. I like how it shows the difference between killing the enemy and killing someone you just had a conversation with.

I love the mist of blood and brains that comes flying out the back of the Turks head. The cop looks completely dumbfounded at the events transpiring - he doesn't even move as the gun is turned in him. He looks like he expects his status as a police officer is going to protect him, but jumps a little as Micheal swings the gun up at him. Shot in the neck, gagging and clutching at his throat, all sound from his mouth stopping once he takes the shot in the head. He looks confused for a second before the lights go out, then falls forward so heavily that he flips the table. It all just feels so real. Mike is lost in the sauce after killing the pair and makes for the exit He finally remembers to drop the gun like 2 steps from the exit.
