CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Michael's Italian bride, Apollonia (Simonetta Stefanelli), is cruelly murdered in an explosion.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Popularly viewed as one of the best American films ever made, the multi-generational crime saga The Godfather is a touchstone of cinema: one of the most widely imitated, quoted, and lampooned movies of all time. Marlon Brando and Al Pacino star as Vito Corleone and his youngest son, Michael, respectively. It is the late 1940s in New York and Corleone is, in the parlance of organized crime, a "godfather" or "don," the head of a Mafia family. Michael, a free thinker who defied his father by enlisting in the Marines to fight in World War II, has returned a captain and a war hero. Having long ago rejected the family business, Michael shows up at the wedding of his sister, Connie (Talia Shire), with his non-Italian girlfriend, Kay (Diane Keaton), who learns for the first time about the family "business." A few months later at Christmas time, the don barely survives being shot by gunmen in the employ of a drug-trafficking rival whose request for aid from the Corleones' political connections was rejected. After saving his father from a second assassination attempt, Michael persuades his hotheaded eldest brother, Sonny (James Caan), and family advisors Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) and Sal Tessio (Abe Vigoda) that he should be the one to exact revenge on the men responsible. After murdering a corrupt police captain and the drug trafficker, Michael hides out in Sicily while a gang war erupts at home. Falling in love with a local girl, Michael marries her, but she is later slain by Corleone enemies in an attempt on Michael's life. Sonny is also butchered, having been betrayed by Connie's husband. As Michael returns home and convinces Kay to marry him, his father recovers and makes peace with his rivals, realizing that another powerful don was pulling the strings behind the narcotics endeavor that began the gang warfare. Once Michael has been groomed as the new don, he leads the family to a new era of prosperity, then launches a campaign of murderous revenge against those who once tried to wipe out the Corleones, consolidating his family's power and completing his own moral downfall. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards and winning for Best Picture, Best Actor (Marlon Brando), and Best Adapted Screenplay, The Godfather was followed by a pair of sequels.

The thing I love most about this scene is that it’s so sudden. Literally as they were getting ready to move to a safer location Fabrizio had planted the bomb and just as Michael suspects him, boom! No over dramatization, suspenseful music, slow motion or anything like that, just gone in the blink of an eye. Truly Michael’s turning point

Mokkari77 Most likely. There were many "what if" scenarios in the story that could've made Michael come out as a better person. What if Vito wasn't shot? What if Sonny wasn't killed? What if Fredo wasn't viewed as incompetent to run the business? What if Appolonia lived? What if him and Kay never separated? For the most part Michael was a victim of circumstances, that's what was so tragic about his story. Eventually he got fully immersed in the family business and he lost his soul. Sad stuff.

There was actually a deleted scene where he was in bed sick after Apollonia's death and immediately asks for Fabrizio. That deleted scene was actually to show how her death had an impact on Michael and how he was thirsty for revenge. Apollonia's death was crucial to Michael's character development.

Michael was a tragic character, he never wanted to be involved in the mafia, he tried so hard to escape, first he joined the marines, after hes forced to murder to save his father, he thought its finally over and tried to settle down in Sicily with Appolonia (He let go of Kay), but they kept coming, they tried to kill his father, twice, then his eldest brother, and finally, his wife, it was exactly at this point he realized there is no escape, he either live a free life and watch his family die or be the don and protect his family. Michael chose Kay for a very good reason people, he could have any woman he wants, so why didnt he marry a traditional Sicilian wife that would support the mafia life? Because Kay is a reminder of his innocence, of his time before he was involved, of what he truly wanted, a life for himself.

I read the book, and there's one bit from the book that they left out that REALLY should have been in the movie. Michael wakes up in bed a week after the bombing and Don Tomassino is with him, and tells him what happened. Michael, at the very end of that chapter, while still in bed, says the following: "Tell my father to get me home. Tell my father I wish to be his son." That was probably the most powerful line in the book for me.

Yes, a true turning point. The scene that always got to me was when Vito (still weak from the gunshots) goes to the mortuary to see Sonny before the mortician had a chance to prepare him. He begins to cry and says: “ Look what they did to my boy.” Heartbreaking.

The darkest moment in Michael's life. Even darker than the end of Part II. Imagine he now knows that Sonny's dead. Not only a great personal loss but now he knows that he will be the don one day, a position he never truly wanted. And then the true love of his life Apollonia is killed. If you read the books you would understand that Michael was extremely in love with Apollonia. Her innocence was what he was drawn to. He could be pre-Sollozzo Michael with her. And then she was taken from him. This is when Michael became the cold-blooded man that we see once he gets back. Broken-hearted. Broken man. Breaks the viewers heart. When I watched the Godfather Epic which is the first two films put together in chronological order it was extremely powerful

This is the culmination of the transition of the Michael Corleone we know. Went from a humble war hero to ruthless mob boss. It's started when he was roughed up by the crooked cop when he try to protect his father from another hit, took him down the road of no return when he kill that cop and his father rival in retaliation. This was the breaking point when his wife was killed to get to him. You can say from either part of the incidents the good Michael died, but the quote stands true with any tragedy character in transition: you either die a hero, or lived long enough to become the villian. That what happened to him. In many eyes, he's a hero. Within himself, he became the villian.

the Mafia were not exactly the smartest cookie in the bin, eh...i mean of all the places Tom and Sonny could have sent Michael, they send him to Sicily, where the rival Mafioso families have extensive spies and contacts, and right in the arms of Don Tommasino. They could have sent Michael to Mexico or maybe Norway, but nope had to be Sicily. Yeah the Mafia would have a real tough time finding him in Sicily.
@jasonmurdock609
@jasonmurdock609 10 лет назад
In Sicily, he was under the protection of Don Tommasino. He had all of Tommasino's men helping to look out for him. Tommasino was implied to be one of the more powerful bosses in Sicily and happened to be a longtime friend and business partner of Vito Corleone. Undoubtedly, Tommasino had leaks or men who were feeding rival families information about Michael's whereabouts. But bear in mind that Michael was wanted for murder. But Tommasino's influence was great enough that it kept Michael safe. If Michael had went to Mexico or Norway, he would've had no protection and could've easily been tracked down by United States authorities or he would've been killed by assassins who would've found Michael a much easier target.

Ted Brasy Immigration isn't really much of an issue, but yeah it has caused a rise in crime. And we dont 'let in people without any check', you nitwit. Believe it or not, but living up to the moral responsibility of helping those less fortunate is not something I nor most others see as negative. Sometimes bad people slip through the gaps, and sometimes the trauma good people have lived through causes problems. That is not a good reason to just give them the boot as people like you keep advocating. Yeah, things like human rights, social responsibility and common decency isn't valued much in your decrepit society. It might harm profits and even out the distribution of wealth! Can't have that! Locking the doors to those in need out of fear from a tiny minority is the easy and cowardly way. We decided to do otherwise. And if you take a look at the statistics of Scandinavian countries VS. USA, you might notice that we're doing quite fine. *drops mic and leaves*

I just noticed how Fabrizio asked Michael in the beginning if he was driving and if his wife was gonna be with him. He thought it was the perfect opportunity to take out Michael but he ended up taking out the wrong person

This is why I have always maintained that Michael Corleone is not a villain or even an antihero. For me he's a classic tragic hero.

I believe it was Barzini who through some obscure connection (cannot remember) had Fabrizio paid off to rig the car, expecting Michael to be in it. Of course, it is Apollonia and it is the turning point of Michael's development. There is actually a deleted scene where Michael himself guns down Fabrizio in his New York apartment. The scene is literally deleted, and the only thing remaining is a picture of Al Pacino firing a double barrel.

"She want's to learn how to drive. She will make a good American wife." was the hint here

If you really think about it, this scene is so slimy.. First, he finds out his own brother gets murdered over some BS(he definitely wasn’t expecting to hear that) and then secondly, his own trusted body guards end up betraying him by blowing up his wife to pieces.. That kinda had me thinking like, ok.. Maybe Barzini got in contact with Fabrizio somehow and had him betray Michael for a better life in America . Luckily, he didn’t get in the car with Apollonia. Dude knew something was up as soon as he saw Fabrizio slowly walking away.. like, if we can’t kill you, then the wife has to go.. heartbreaking man. You come to understand with Michael turned so cold blooded after all of this.. It’s almost like at this point, he really didn’t have a choice but to be ruthless..

1:37 "wait I'll get the baggage." No need, Fabrizio just made sure Michael has his baggage for the rest of his life

Sigh I gotta say, Pacino was so handsome in this scene. It’s heartbreaking. Vincent 😍 looks like him more than he looks like his own father.
