This is a deleted scene from The Godfather sourced from The Godfather Trilogy 1901-1980. This scene takes place between Clemenza telling Michael that the Don will be okay and the"sleeps with the fishes" scene. In this scene, Sonny and Tessio talk to Michael about who betrayed Vito.

Poor Clemenza, he was almost blamed twice for being a rat or traitor, the first when Vito was shot and when Barzini tried to kill Mike during the "deal" after Vito's funeral. But he's stayed loyal all those times.
@lufsolitaire5351
@lufsolitaire5351 2 года назад
There were always little subtle cues and nuances that at least in part I, Clemenza would stay undyingly loyal to Vito, and unlike Tessio I think he had a closer relationship with Michael and while he had his reservations he ultimately put his trust in him. Like when Vito made it very clear Michael was now the head and that he’d step down to being underboss, both had their reservations but Clemenza publicly affirmed it while Tessio gave a weak nod even before the funeral. While Tessio was the more competent and intelligent, I think Clemenza had a closer personal relationship with Vito and family, given how much more familial/hospitable he was with Sonny/Michael and the “storyteller” aspect of personhood.
@adrianharrell87
@adrianharrell87 2 года назад
Michael would never believed Clemenza was a traitor neither time. He knew that Clemenza and his father was old friends and he introduced his father to a life of crime when they was young. And during Vito's funeral, he wasn't surprised when he sees that Tessio was the traitor with the Barzini meeting because he knows that it a smart move and he knows that Tessio was alway smart. But this scene remind of the game where after Michael became don, he knew there was a traitor in the family and he figured it was between Aldo (the protagonist) or Monk but deep down he knew that it couldn't be Aldo because he did so much for the family.

Absolutely, gives you a great idea. Plus, Michael's one sentence "He's my father, too, Sonny!" basically tells you everything you need to know about why a sincere, honest, intelligent young man like Michael, out of the blue, decided to get his hands dirty ... for Pa, whose favorite he was anyway!
@EricMustardman
@EricMustardman 2 года назад
@@NiVi192 In some way, there was already a lot of blood on his hands. He'd been in the Marine Corps and received a couple of medals, which he certainly didn't get for behaving like a reserved college student and talking calmly and reasonably. He got them for killing enemies, and most likely in combat situations in which he could see the lives of those he had hit expiring. So, despite his junior years, he already was a battle-hardened veteran who wouldn't faint at the sight of blood, gore, guts and brain. In the book, Puzo describes that scene in which Michael decided to personally take action against Sollozzo and McClusky and was ridiculed by Sonny as a college boy with an Ivy League suit who wants to play gangster. Michael's reaction was a verbal rebuke of his older brother that was fierce in a very cold manner and deadly menacing at the same time. Everybody present at that meeting felt that if Michael had had a gun in his hand, Sonny might have actually been in danger. Sonny immediately gave in and stopped playing the paternalistic older brother, probably because he had felt that Michael was much more mature than he and that Michael had indeed the better, more rational arguments.

This must have been a tough scene to cut... - It sets up the reasoning for Paulie's assassination beautifully - It clearly affirms Michael's belief in Clemenza (and Sonny's) - It completely cements the coming powershift from Sonny to Michael - all the while, Tessio flies under the radar, undetected... The only thing missing are the cannolis.

The initiate Mafioso, about to be "made", is shown the gun and the knife, illustrating his life-to-be. Why suspicion on Clemenza?Firstly...Clemenza was known to be an extremely good caporegime and mentor. A quick check on the Godfather wikipedia points out that FIVE future capos were started in his regime - Sonny, Lampone, Pentangeli, Ritchie Nobilio and Joey Zasa. This shows that he has the ability to spot and nurture the talent needed to start a family...Furthermore, in the scene when Michael asks Tessio and Clemenza to be patient and trust him now that Vito is turning all responsibilities over to him, Clemenza is the one who asks Vito Corleone for permission for he and Tessio to start their own family, strongly suggesting that while neither of them believed Michael was an appropriate choice for don, he was the one prepared to speak out about it. Another fact is that in the books Clemenza is frequently shown to be quite brutal in his dealings (whereas in the film, although brutal, he is also given an almost jovial "big-guy" character)...However, whilst Tom took all this as being evidence that Clemenza would be more likely to rat Michael out and betray the family, Michael recognised it as loyalty and dedication to Corleone family (coupled with a lack of intelligence to look for opportunities elsewhere, beyond his own family). Tessio on the other hand masks his emotions throughout the entire don-changeover-process and Michael knew he had the intelligence, cunning and ability to betray the family, which is what led him to suspect Tessio. 🕵️‍♂️

On the first question. The bartender was screaming at them not to kill him in the bar. Maybe they figured the bartender or someone else around would honestly think that Corleone actually sanctioned the hit and allow the Rosatto brothers to move in. Damn Hyman Roth was a brilliant Tactician. Also Roth's man was running the senate inquiry, maybe he wanted it on record that Michael ordered the hit. Just to convince any nay-sayers like Will CiCi. But great question though, im really flummoxed on both questions. Maybe on the 2nd question, he thought since the Rosatto brothers had moved on his turf and caused chaos and sold drugs to children, and hes gotta shake hands with someone who Michaels father Don Vito would have sanctioned frankie to whack, in turns gives him a "Lucky" c-note. Implying he's lucky to be standing there instead of whacked. Also 100$ seemed like a small concession for them to make compared to his allowing them to live another day. thats just my theory.
@alphamale1228
@alphamale1228 6 лет назад
Joe Roscoe There are some theories that the hit was designed to fail and that Hyman Roth told the would-be assassins to say that as part of a larger plan to turn Pentangeli against the Corleones, hence why Tom Hagen says that "Roth played this one beautifully", but this raises more questions about how much of what went down (the random cop walking by, and the shootout that follows) could have been planned in advance. One thing we do know is that Danny Aiello simply ad libbed the line and Coppola kept it in the film. Personally, I think he did it to taunt Pentangeli by making him think he'd been duped and that Hyman Roth was able to turn a failure into an almost success, but that's just me. As far as the C- note goes... Frankie was forced into the meeting in the first place. The Rosato brothers manufactured a beef. Michael made Frankie give back territories to the hated Rosatos and placate Hymen Roth. Michael made Frankie deliver the news by a sit-down which increased the insult. The C Note is insulting, in terms of Mafia street money, this is an insultingly low figure. It suggests Frankie is being bought off for pennies. Keep um coming Joe! It gives me something to do other than listen to my miserable wife complaining all the time.

This film teaches you so much about human nature, the art of wielding power responsibly and conversely irresponsibly. It's also in part a window on the soul of America. As has been said elsewhere, the Godfather is the I-Ching because it teaches you so much about human relationships, with all its desires, compromises, angst, deceits and yes love. Wonderfully powerful cinema and brilliant in every aspect. One does not admire the Corleone Family Crime Syndicate, but you have to admit they are one hell of a great story. Puzi's depiction of the American Mafia is without equal as is its cinematic interpretation. Totally compelling in every aspect.

Disagree, this scene definitely clarifies the story for the audience (not all of whom have read the book) and does a lot of character-definition for several characters which would have been helpful. Would have been better left in, but they have to cut somewhere, to get the run time down and it was already too long. Without this scene the beginning of the war is very abbreviated, choppy, and hard to follow unless you read the book.
