The Godfather - Deleted Scene - Fifty Good Men 

Love how Sonny knew Tessio's (a caporegime) phone number by heart... but then has to go to his father's safe to look up Luca Brasi's number. It's like opening a safe that contains the nuclear launch codes.

I'm not a film expert by any means, nor do I consider myself one, but I find Sonny's character to be so interesting. Stubborn, cruel, but still had such a powerful love for his family. As much of an asshole that he could be, he would've been an older brother that most of us would've wanted.

The beauty of this scene comes from the Resigned Reaction of the Mother; this is a call or news she's expected for YEARS and for this ALONE the scene should have been kept.

I really enjoyed these deleted Sonny scenes and feel they really added depth to Sonny's character as he was able to step up and makes moves in the absence of Vito and wasn't just a hothead. I can see why James Caan would be disappointed about these cut scenes.

The look he gives to his fathers chair before bringing the phone closer to the other chair is brilliant...I love it

Just for the record. And In case people haven’t read the book. Sonny was smart very very smart and as smart as Michael and the godfather. The book talks of him as a tactical genius akin to Napoleon. The movie has a deleted scene where he tests Michael by asking him who betrayed the Don. Pauline or Clemenza. Sonny knew it was Paulie. He also fought the 5 families to a stalemate. Sonny only had one fatal flaw. He couldn’t manage his emotions. His mouth revealed his thoughts and his temper led to his death. Michael and the don could get angry but they could manage it. Ultimately Sonny was the ideal underboss. Respected and feared but needed someone to hold his leash.

These deleteds are such a treasure for Godfather aficionados. Almost like seeing a new Godfather you've never seen before. The 8-hour Saga (with all the deleted scenes included) is probably the greatest movie ever made. Why the hell isn't it available for purchase anywhere?

I think that Santino didn't sit in his father's chair because his father was STILL alive and he didn't want to bring bad luck or believe that his father was really close to death.

They should have kept this scene in too. It really shows how Sonny realized he would have to take up the mantle. See how he stopped himself from sitting in the Don's chair and sits beside. Shows some reluctance to accept that the Don might be dead and that he would be the boss.

I really like how Sonny goes to sit in his fathers chair, pauses, then pulls up another chair to the desk. Basically telling us he will never inherit the throne.

This scene proved Sonny is a thinker and strategist as well and this is done by him not wanting to use Clemenza's men at that moment. It also shows Vito had schooled him well since Sonny went into action, first by securing the compound two getting a hold of Luca which meant Sonny was preparing for war. (He was now the head of the family until he got word that his dad was still alive. In other words, Sonny stepped up. His only fault was, he was too impulsive although the Corleone family was never in danger of losing the war when Sonny was in control)... ;)

James Caan is the ace in the hole of The Godfather. He owns the middle third of the film (from the Don being shot to his own end). Even in Part II when he pops up for his one scene near the end the movie gets a kick start of energy that it lacks most of the time (Andrew Dice Clay based his entire career on copying Caan in that scene).

Watch the deleted scene where Sonny gets the news. After he hangs up, he squeezes the phone in anguish and rage. He can't completely clear his head because he struggles to remember Tom's number and is confused talking to Theresa. Basically, you're watching a man in shock. Brilliant work, Mr. Caan.

I remember watching The Godfather Movies and even The Sopranos and wishing I could eat at their Kitchen Table, Restaurant or wherever they ate.

In the book Sonny was described as the best executioner in gang war in the history of crime in America that too when he was only 19.He singlehandedly fought with independent Irish gunmen and Luca brasi fought off the families supporting them.When it came to war nobody was like Sonny not even Michael,the only thing which was holding back Sonny was his temper and anger management issues which eventually lead to his death.

Sonny always mashes his bread into the sauce, really absorbs it. Always make me hungry watching it!

Damn. In most movies you can tell fairly quickly why a scene was deleted. This movie was so good that the deleted scenes are better than what's in most movies.

"Santino did they kill your father" that line reveals so much. She not only understands how serious it is, and the position that they're in, she knows what might happen if Vito dies. She's been dreading but also waiting for this moment for years. Like she's gone to bed every night grateful that it was put off another day.

I love how they reproduced this scene right out of the novel. Right down to the detail of Sonny breaking off a piece of bread and scooping up the peppers and olive in the pan to make himself a "sloppy sandwich" as termed in book.

Whatever the fuck they were eating looks incredibly fucking delicious, makes me hungry.

This is the one that should have been kept. Mama was emotionally prepared for this. Sonny wasn't. Hes surprised by her reaction and finds comfort in bread instead of from his mother. Doesn't sit in his father's chair. Doesn't want Clemenzas people because Paulie is in that regime and that's who he suspects. This also showed Sonny as more than just a hothead. Uncertain, sad, reverent, suspicious. Not just angry and aggressive.

Food is very important in Godfather and Goodfellas.

He should've consulted Bolton. All he'd need is 20 good men.

What surprised me (which in hindsight shouldn't have) was how calm Sonny's mother was when he told her about Vito...

Every Italian can relate to Sonny grabbing that loaf of bread when his mother left the kitchen, and tearing off a piece and dipping it in the warm tomato sauce on the stovetop. Those details are only possible when a film is directed by a person wholly familiar with the subject matter. Francis Ford Coppola grew up in an Italian-American home where this practice was a cultural norm.

This is a woman who has been married to a gangster for a long time. When her son tells her that her husband has been hurt, her first reaction isn't shock or panic, and she just calmly asks if he's been killed.

There’s so much in this scene, why chop it?! The house being so dark and depressing, unlike every other scene where it’s bright a full of action. I also love how Sonny grabs the loaf of bread and rips a big piece off, like he’s so pissed he wishes it was Sollozzo’s face!! The mom’s reaction is incredible too, it’s like she knows this is a possibility, she prays it never happens, but is always ready for it, and that’s why she’s so calm and not a total basket case when Sonny tells her Vito is hurt. Sonny looking at then not sitting in his fathers chair out of respect. Brilliant scene, the editor should get whacked for chopping it out!

I love this scene. This is the moment Sonny realized that he’s possibly the new Don. He handled it like a boss.

I wish they release THE GODFATHER SAGA. It shows The Godfather part 1 and 2 in a chronological order with deleted scenes like this one.

This really displays the difference between Sonny and Michael. Sonny is emotional and you can see he's trying to keep it together. Compare that how cool Michael is, even as early as the hospital scene.

The book says that Santino when he was calm was a great strategist when he organized an attack. But Santino's weak point was that he didn't know how to control his emotions.

I haven't seen a scene yet that I'm glad they cut out. Every second of this movie is a masterpiece. I wouldn't care if it was 5 hours long. I wish they had kept everything in.

Sonny was my favorite character in the movie. James Caan was an EXCELLENT Santino Corleone.

actually when you read the novel in the ground sonny declared all out war in all 5 families and they suffered great loses killing, shooting, like a mob war and more figthting after solozos death, sonny is the great tactician in the time vitos absence a great general for hitting back vs the 5 families, the only problem carlo husband of connie sold him out to brizini by going out hot headed to connies brazini mens get a hint to assasinate him caused carlos tip, sonny is not very intelligent in polititics and business but he has great intellectual skill and strategy in fighting back to suffer the entire 5 families in entire mob don un the empire. that is why after sonny death vito make a peace to tactical retreat to micheal and how to wipe out entire 5 families don.

The role of Mother is probably the least appreciated one in the movie, probably because she had so little time on screen. But she is the one that had to suffer tragedy after tragedy because of the decisions made by the men in her life, by the people she loved.

Vito’s oldest wasn’t the greatest Don; but I like how he didn’t sit in dad’s chair out of respect and love - as well as not wanting to accept the unthinkable.

Watching this scene you are impressed by the attention to details in the book. With Sonny making himself a sandwich after telling his mom. I can't help but compare it to the JJ Abrams travesty of Star Trek reboots. You can tell he never watched an episode of the original series or read anything about them. A good director is everything to a movie. If its not true to the story, it means nothing. Francis Ford Coppola was a master director

This scene makes me think Santino wouldve been an alright boss. Especially if he wouldve found an underboss he wouldve listened to.

Sonny deciding to pull up a chair in his father’s office instead of sitting behind the desk is great on so many levels.

Every time I break a loaf of Italian Bread and dip it in the sauce I think of Sonny. He was king of sopping up sauce.

Ironic that Sonny trusted Tessio more than Clemenza during a moment of crisis...when it was Tessio who would ultimately betray the family.

1:48 Sonny is telling Tessio without actually saying it that Clemenza is suspect and may be getting whacked very shortly. The unspoken message resonates loud and clear with an old hand like Tessio.

Why don't more folks put on Sonny's shoes and see if they fit? His father had been shot and hospitalized, Tom was picked up by Sollozzo and held for some time against his will, Fredo was reduced to a sobbing and scared mess...later, his sister was beaten by his brother in law (remember, Sonny was the one that introduced Connie to Carlo), then, there is a second attempt on Vito, Michael's jaw is broken, leading Michael to step in to "fix the problem" at Louis' Restaurant. If I was Sonny, by the time I had gotten another phone call from Connie despite having threatened Carlo against repeating his mistake, I might have gone out on the turnpike by myself as well. I mean, come on, Sonny wasn't simply a hothead, he was driven to his end (literally) by trying to carry too much weight on his own shoulders instead of asking for some help from Tom, Tessio and Clemenza.

Sonny represents the first generation of the Italian/American gangster to succumb to the character flaws that would eventually consume them all. For example, Sonny cheats on his wife, he was eager to go into the drug business and he let his temper affect his judgment. Sonny had no ability to keep his appetites in check. This is emphasized by Sonny when he rips off the bread and dunks it in the sauce, which is supposed to be for everyone, without even caring about germs from his hands. On the other hand, Don Corleone was a deeply principled man who lived by a code. Don Corleone was loyal to his wife, he ruled the family with cunning and he never let his temper cloud his judgment. By the time families like the Sopranos came to be, gangsters were all degenerate gamblers, who cheated on their wives and got hooked on drugs while they created an environment that enabled their kids to become drug addicts. It was these character flaws that ultimately led to the downfall of the Mafia in America as many character-flawed gangsters became informants to avoid long terms in jail.

My thoughts on deleted scene: I grew up the legendary film with my family and relatives for decades as if one day , Francis Ford will release an ultimatum anniversary GODFATHER in full version and probably is gonna be 10hrs LONG! won't be in DVD format though. Some new theatrical technology from silicon valley and refreshing as F.F.Coppola lives north of silicon valley and has access to the new GODFATHER trilogy's in full! Not DVD but Blockchain tech injunction with Paramount. We will see!
