The famous quote of The Godfather A MAN WHO DOESN't SPEND TIME WITH HIS FAMILY, CAN NEVER BE A REAL MAN. Johny Fontane and Don Vito Corleone's conversation. Follow me on Instagram: / the.godfather Follow me on FB: / thegodfatherig
"A man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man," has always been my favorite line in the Godfather trilogy. It encapsulates everything you need to know about Vito Corleone.
@@junlee6663 You're damn right. And whats more humiliating is that Vito didn't even say it directly (face-to-face) to Sonny because of how embarrassed he was Sonny's wayward behavior. I hope I never have to talk to my son that way. Brilliant also because he is setting two weak men (Sonny and Johnny) straight at the same time!
@@junlee6663 someone pointed that out to me too and that's the genius of Coppola - Vito says that while looking at Sonny (twice) as though to show that the Godfather knew what Sonny was doing in the scene before...
I love how Vito only said the quote after Sonny walked in. Like the sight of him and knowledge of his unfaithfulness to his wife compelled him to give Johnny the life lesson about family.
@@joeydoherty368 Everyone has a family. Even if they aren't married, they still got parents and possibly siblings and loads of other distant relatives.
I love how he looks at Sonny when he says that because he was not talking to Johnny but to Sonny. Sonny was late getting to the meeting because he was screwing his mistress and that was a way the Don was telling him how he does not approve of his life choices.
I just noticed the link behind that statement and Sonnys' behavior while watching this again for the umpteenth time and I wondered if anyone else did...they did.
I didn't see this earlier comment, but I said the same thing about this scene recently. The dded level of humiliation is the fact that Vito did not even address Sonny face-to-face when he made that statement. One of the most brilliant scenes in cinema in terms of substance, directing and performance.
this quote and " women and children can be careless, men can't " in the scene when hes talking to Michael and how they're going to get him are my top two favorite quotes
Frank Dees I think he's more talking about guys that feel the need to brag about their so called masculinity. Veto was a badass. You don't need to be mocho to be one.
That's the true masculine wisdom every solitary man needs to hear. Every father needs to teach his son this power we have. Be a man. And take care of yourself and your family.
You have no more power than any other person. This is also weird and extra cringe coming from someone who admires Jordan Peterson, who never stops crying about incels.
1:46 there's a mistake here that people often omit. The guy is showing up his left cheek so Vito can kiss him, the way he's done it with his right cheek, but Vito doesn't do it. Brando still found a way to make it not look awkward though.
This may actually be my favorite movie. It doesn't have the excitement that I usually prefer in a film, but it's so incredibly classic. Every scene is incredible.
I come back to watch this every so often when I start feeling sorry for myself. Long work week or I'm not getting along with my mom or sister, Vito slaps me back to reality. My father told me his father told him "you don't become a real man until you're father dies." It's a somber reality, but it's true, and if you want to be a true patriarch, you better be ready to handle that responsibility when the time comes.
This is what young men need to have 'ingrained" into their minds by the time they are adults: 1) A man who has kids, but doesn't spend time with his family shows he cares more himself than his family (Selfishness) 2) A man who doesn't spend time with his family also means he's less willing to do what it takes to keep the family together (more family breakups) 3) A man who doesn't spend time with his family no doubt puts a strain to his marriage and relationship with his wife (less successful marriages) 4) A man who doesn't spend time with his family is less aware, less prepared, and less eager for the trials of parenthood (bad relationships with kids) 5) A man who doesn't spend time with his family is then more likely to breakaway from his own family (distances himself from his parents/grandparents/siblings/etc.) What are examples of how a man proves that he spends time with his family, well here are few examples: 1) Go to your kids' extra-curricular events whenever you have the chance 2) Watch & attend tutorials so that you can be a good 2nd teacher for your kids in their fields of interest 3) Go the "extra" mile for you friends, family, or clients by giving up some of your free time when it's clear they could use your help on something 4) Help arrange family events beyond the big/key holidays (Christmas/Thanksgiving) and do things like Birthdays, Anniversaries, Father/Mothers Day, etc. 5) Be able to get on the phone with your kids when they call you or just once in a while randomly get in touch with them I learned this from my father and even though he's no longer with me, he taught & showed me these things to me, and I see why spending time with his family made him the man I will forever respect and hold to as my own standard as a man!
Sonny smokes after his father's look on him saying the quote. However the camera still focuses on the Vito. What a great catch for the director even it's a tiny detail from the beginning of the trilogy. Best movie in drama.
It’s good to hear this again because in 2024 we have a whole generation of boys being raised by there granny, Auntie, big sister, and moms salute them no disrespect, but be a man pass down knowledge and masculinity especially to your boys believe me it makes a difference my aunt at a dinner party one year brought up a great point my Gay cousin an her were discussing different topics an by the way she isn’t biased in any way but I remember hearing her tell him “EVERYONE WASNT MADE TO BE “THE WOMAN”plain and simple she didn’t tell my cousin to “stop being who you are “ she simply meant the universe knows what it is doing
godfather a real man isnt a man unless he spends time with his family... choosing with free time unless their is a sacrifice for greater good and then when little free time given still chooses to spend time with his family.
Marlon Brando did not memorize most of his lines and read from cue cards during most of the film. As a matter of fact, Marlon, who was the father of Method acting, was famous for this; he felt that doing a cold open type reading for the cameras, and then using that very first un-practiced take, was the best way to get an authentic performance. He did the exact same thing for Superman. The set for Krypton was filled with the cards pasted here and there for Marlon as he read his lines for the first time.
It took me a few viewings before I realized that Vito took a subtle shot at his son in this scene. Gives him a quick look while saying but a man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man, knowing that Sonny runs around on his wife. All the little nuances in this movie are masterful.
Awesome.. 😎 That line of how a man who doesn’t spend time with his family can never be a real man sure can ring true (even today). Plus, I can see Marlon Brando turning to his late, great friend Michael Jackson and saying that he could play the role of the Don Vito Corleone as well as Marlon did here - especially with the cat purring away while being held (as Michael *did* like cats), and saying things like “A man who doesn’t spend time with his family can never be a real man” too. And speaking of which, that line shows how Vito views family as important to him as well. 😊
I appreciate the line before that about crying like a female and acting like a man, we are not supposed to be so invested in emotions as men, it weakens our image to everyone and doesn't garner any respect. It's a fault that many of us have because we didn't have strong male guidance coming up and most Single mothers can never teach this trait to boys. Ive always spent plenty of time with my family, so much so I couldn't wait to get out of the Army, too many men that dismissed family as a whole for the sake of being a top tier Soldier.... No thanks.
Then there was Dallas. I could see patriarch of that show, Jock Ewing saying something of that nature, while giving his own eldest son, the notoriously philandering J.R. Ewing that same side glance.
A tribalist Ideology at its peak of the iceberg If i have the family then others have too.. And thats why selfishness is a dangerous disease it makes us blind deaf and dumb to the effect of our deed does on other living.where only we become youniverse to ourselves And deeply weepy for ourselves.
