Footage of Al Neri visiting Meyer Klingman, the owner of the gambling license for Michael's new hotel, at the casino, and asking him to leave. Klingman resists, so Neri chases him through the casino into a closed auditorium, which is rehearsing for a cabaret, until Neri threatens him with a heavy chair, at which point Klingman finally capitulates and leaves the hotel. Neri then sits down in the seats and signals for the performers to go on with their rehearsal. Sourced from the 2016 HBO stream of The Godfather: The Complete Epic 1901-1959. Captured in 720p.

Deleted scenes always have a fascination but it’s very rare that it wasn’t for the best they were cut. In Godfather Part II, the only scene I think should have been included is Vito witnessing the street hoods cutting Don Fanucci’s throat. It’s a good scene and it wouldn’t have hurt pacing and it added a lot of period flavour. Explained the scar Fanucci had in later scenes too. But most importantly it shows us why Vito began to question if Fanucci really was connected to The Black Hand. It was that incident combined with a few other clues which lead him to come to the realisation Fanucci was a fraud he could bump off with no consequences.

Al Neri was an ex cop who came to the attention of Michael In particular who was looking for his own personal enforcer. With the death of Luca Bratzie and with his other mafia bosses getting old or possibly looking to betray him, Michael realized he needed muscle. Al Neri as a cop had no problem beating people up. It’s what got him fired and busted. After he got out the Coroline family came calling. Al when he appears solo is without question an extension of Michael’s authority and is best listened to. He was so effective that he remained Michael’s personal bodyguard into the 3rd movie. And anyone who knew who Al worked for knew better then to get in his way

I was thinking the exact same thing. I am glad they cut this scene. Its out of character for his Movie version... @@YoRon427 , yup, but Richard Bright wouldn't have been my first choice to play Al Neri. I always think of him as the feckless con artist in The Getaway, who got KTFO by Steve McQueen. He was a great character actor and chameleon, but never sounded like a tough guy when he spoke. But having him play Neri as the silent type, he came across as more of an intelligent, perceptive and deceptively dangerous assassin, rather than as a psychopathic brute.
@YoRon427

@annoyboyPictures
@annoyboyPictures 2 года назад
@@YoRon427 Everyone compares the movie to the Book... The movie is a different medium of story telling. There are limitations and formats to follow that the book does not have to. And many details from the book obviously have to be omitted. Also, most people have this attitude that a Book is always superior to the Movie adaptation... I disagree. Sometimes the Original Writer of the Book is lesser than the director who interprets it. Case in Point: "The Shinning" by Stephen King. Stanley Kubrick's movie Adaptation is far superior. Brett Easton Ellis' American Psycho is another great example of this.

This scene suggests to me that Coppola was correct in deleting most or all of the scenes he deleted, interesting though some of them are. Compare this scene with that of Luca Brasi's murder, the whole atmosphere of which was chillingly credible, starting from the fact that the hit was set up so could be no witnesses, even though it was in a hotel. This scene involving Neri slapping the manager around in front of hundreds of hotel/casino clients stretches the audience's 'suspension of disbelief' to breaking point, like something out of a B movie. The director didn't once do that in what he included, and what he cu,t from Godfather I and II ... every scene realistic. Godfather III broke with this many times although it has been argued that in that third film the director was trying a new departure, some kind of 'modern opera' where melodrama is the order of the day. I far preferred the first two movies for their sustained realism. I'm glad Coppola left scenes like this Neri one out.

However, apart from that, this scene also takes away from the cool and mystery of the character. Al Neri was always an enigma, but this scene takes all that away. @Koldeman
@Koldeman 2 года назад
I agree with the consensus that his dialogue was delivered weakly & although that could possibly be remedied through AD work in post-production, this scene wasn't necessary to push the overall plot of the story. It is extremely interesting to see Al Neri at work though. You can tell that he doesn't lose control & only pushes back as far as he needs to in order to achieve his goals...and yet, there is a focused rage that makes him just as feared as Vito's enforcer Luca Brasi. Another point is that this answers the question of why Neri isn't acting as Michael's bodyguard. The veteran, experienced (& uninvolved w/the Family) Sicilian tough guy Bussetta travels with Michael while Neri continues to act in full capacity as a Corleone Family representative. The conclusion where Neri calmly sets the chair down & makes the performers finish their show is just fantastic. I have a totally different perspective on the exclusion of the Fabrizio subplot which is briefly seen at the end of this clip. That is one very short subplot that perhaps should have been left in. It's not important to the overall story arc of GF2, but it does make crystal clear that anyone who crosses Michael Corleone cannot run or hide from his reach.

I can see why Neri was cut here - the scene opens and we see him in profile - his profile is weak - as he confronts Klingman he looks small - and then when Neri speaks -- out comes the voice of a high pitched mouse - these are the reasons this scene got cut - as long as you kept the actor playing Neri in the shadows and filmed him straight on with no dialogue - he comes off strong, menacing - but bring him into close up and let him speak -- and as an actor he fails, thus the character fails - Coppola saw this in the dailies.

There are some deleted scenes that I wish had stayed in, but I'm glad this one was cut. I like the idea of Neri as Michael's silent enforcer in the shadows, cool and calm, you don't see him until your number's up - basically he's Michael's very own Luca Brasi. This scene compromises that characterization a little, and not for the better.

Actually they did “The Godfather saga” which was the chronological order of the entire series. In that version this scene is in. I rather like it. Prior to this scene is when Michael and Roth discuss moving Klingman out so it wasn’t another make an offer you can’t refuse scene. I do agree that this was an underdeveloped character but… as it was the movie is 3 hours long. If they fleshed out Al and Rocco the movie would have been 4 hours.

Damn I forgot he killed the Archbishop, the godfather always has the most dramatic murders, but the archbishop falling down that big tower thing was might be the most. I didn’t know he killed Moe Greene though, you might be talking about the book though which I’ve never read, in the scene I recall only seeing the back of a much larger man than Al, but he might’ve just been normal size. I’m kind of rambling.
