With all the inevitable comments to come, here’s my final statement on this. Should these mistakes have happened? No. Do they make this a total failure of a release? No. My point is that WB is aware. They’ll do what’s right once they find out what is right, not what the Internet tells them is right. For now, I’m enjoying Rocky in beautiful 4K and loving it. And that’s what’s fun for me.

Fair enough, sir. But just be aware there are people who collect physical media and love films and who care about and want the original filmmakers made. To preserve that original sound at least. Include it in every release by default and then go ahead for the remixes for modern consumers. No problem there.

@@200wattstudio8 I’m with you! I’m just saying I think they’ll fix this one. It’s the one issue I can see being worth a replacement to get right because it is important. I’m speaking on behalf of the average person but also the real film junkies as well so I have to cover both areas. For the average person, this is no issue which I think we agree on

I think, after watching R1 and R2... this is my take. I agree with you 99% of the time, however, I have to say... with these films... I'd disagree to a certain extent... I think what's disappointed people is expectations... we have had terrible releases for years for some of the biggest sporting films ever released. These films for me, are my "desert island" films... So, watching R1... I just feel surely a full remaster of all of these with a more modern process would have benefitted. I've given my reviews elsewhere but what I found was the difference in scenes... (which could be original source obviously), but some scenes looked great but some were appalling and if that truly is source then this is fine... but it's still disappointing. R2 was deffo a lot better... grain nice, colours fine, some poorer scenes but yeah.... but the sound for me, I was really expecting better sound... in this day and age... and what I've seen with older films and what can be done... I just feel this release is half baked and half assed personally, same old soundtracks which were poor in the first place? Sound in both R1 and R2 in certain scenes sounds like it's been added later and is disjointed (weirdly a bit like in Universal Soldier 4k which was surprising)... some scenes it's open and nice, then others it's echoey... once again is it down to source, probably but I would think a little more effort... a DTS-X or Atmos remaster sound could at least be an options... to port over Bluray sound from what 8 years ago ish? Strikes me as a little lax.... however the issues on Pitch etc, yeah lets not go down that rabbit hole... I didn't really notice it at all and I'm running a 11.2 calibrated system so I think people are being a little pedantic with technicalities rather than "does it sound good"! Could we not have enhanced them? Surely? It just feels like they've done the minimum to get the release out... I'm currently buying the Steel Books as I was so excited and a lot of that excitement has gone... it feels like they could have ALL been better for me... I WILL ADD though... like yourself, did this stop me from enjoying R1 and R2 (awaiting delivery of R3/R4)? NO, not in the slightest these films are iconic and even watching on VHS I love them to bits... but this is where I'm so disappointed that we could've had definitive versions and these for me, while being the best available which they are... just don't feel like we've seen Rocky the best it could ever be? It's like a massive missed opportunity to get the definitive last versions out there and not leave anything on the table.

Awesome - I saw Rocky (1976) twice in the movie theater in '76. I was just 8 years old. Yes, even young kids got pumped up watching this! Then along came Star Wars, a year later....

ROCKY was nominated for an ACADEMY AWARD for sound for a reason. To dismiss the fact that those craftsman did shoddy work is not good. It's an insult to the original filmmakers. It IS a big deal when the label advertise "the original theatrical mono track" when in fact it is a revisionist remix by other people than the original Oscar nominated craftsmen. For physical media, we deserve better.

@@JeffRauseo Fair enough. I still disagree and think theatrical soundtracks are important, but I hear ya. I think it should be included by default. Thankfully, Speilberg spearheaded Universal to include his original mono track on JAWS last two BD releases and the 4K. He made certain discisions in the film for impact (such as the mack truck sound as the shark busted into Orca. the 5.1 replaced it with tinkling glass shattering taking away from the BOOM that had impact).

I just don't get how you could want an upgraded visual experience and yet be mad for not having original mono audio. Like yeah it should be an option....especially if it exists on a dvd or something somewhere, but then just stick with that experience. Having old mono audio but with HDR color grading, sounds pretty revisionist already, pick one. Original experience, or modernized one. I also wonder how many people who want that original audio experience, are using room correction or channel and tone controls in their AVR and altering it anyway, or having the AVR upmix it to multi channel or something.

I'm not saying that is the case here, but it has happened in other cases Wanting a movie to look as close to as good as it did when it was released in theater and wanting original audio are not two opposite ideas.

Honestly I think Rocky deserves a better release than this. This set just seems to be lacking in both the case design, the lack of new 4K scans and upgraded audio tracks, and two films are missing. I think I will stick to the blu-rays for now. Thanks for the honest review.

Overall, I’m happy with the set. I do wish we got the first six in 4K, but perhaps since there’s a work-print of Rocky V that’s better than the theatrical cut floating out there, it’s possible Stallone wants that version out so that the film he wrote and John G. Avildsen directed can be shown in proper quality. Of course he’s also not on the best terms of Irwin Winkler who owns the franchise, so that could be a reason for why it’s just the first four as well as maybe they wanted to test the waters if people actually wanted this collection too. Either way, let’s hope we’ll get V and VI in a collection along with the Creed films. I personally didn’t have any major issues with the sound or anything of the sort, at least none that truly jutted out to me where I’m either demanding a new disc or discs that have all the problems fixed or my money back, but maybe that’s just me. Thanks for the video man!

The problem is that most people have owned this on VHS, DVD, and blu-ray already. When we buy 4K versions of old movies, we are buying them to have a substantial upgrade.... Not to have same or worse audio.

What I don't like with IV Directors cut...is the change in aspect ratio. It wasn't originally filmed that way so what we have here is two black bars taking up the picture, faces look too zoomed in and even at times cropping out objects and texts (apparent in the newspaper and magazine shots when Rocky wants revenge)

You do know the aspect ratio change gives you more of a picture which works better for this format? The director’s cut of Rocky IV is a new version, so it should look different.

You can see in the ‘Making of’ the whole time Stallone and the editor worked on this version the format was in 1.85:1 widescreen, so that full frame and no black bars. The black bars seemed to be added in at the last minute…I have no idea why, perhaps Stallone wanted this version of Rocky IV to connect with the Creed films more which were filmed in cinema scope 2.35:1

Here’s the real problem with Rocky 5.1 versus supposed Original Mono. The 5.1 mix, when created, dropped a music cue from the emotional finale of the fight. All previous Blu-rays had this issue with the 5.1 mix. However, they had the correct mono mix, where the music cue was present. Now, because the 4K uses a fold down of the 5.1 mix, the music cue is missing on both. We no longer have the option to listen to the true and correct audio of Rocky.

I agree with your assessment, the only thing I would like to add is Rocky III was grainy as you mentioned, but the Rocky III footage on Rocky Vs. Drago was crystal clear, and that shows that the footage exists, so they could have done way better visually on the Rocky III disc. I love this collection, and I am happy to own it!

I suspect that if it were the standard Blu-ray of Rocky 2 that had audio at the wrong pitch, we probably would have heard about it a long time ago. So, on the assumption that the 4K has the incorrectly pitched audio, I agree that it’s probably not a make or break scenario for the very casual consumer. But what if Rocky is your absolute favorite movie, or even one of your most favorite movies (top 10 or so)? I don’t think it would feel very satisfactory to just settle, to just accept this. I get that is 4K collectors can be nitpicky, but this is supposed to be a premium format. We DO have higher standards for it. It becomes a slippery slope if we begin accepting preventable flaws in the production of these discs. Just because you can point to worse issues elsewhere with 4K discs doesn’t mean we should turn a blind eye to this issue. That’s not how things improve.

We have no idea what’s right and what’s wrong. We don’t work at Warner Bros. The Bluray could be wrong and no one noticed. It could be right and this is wrong. My point is, nothing improves by breaking out pitchforks either. They’ll just stop making physical media if the online community screams at them for every mistake. We hold them to it, they’re aware. But no need to scream bloody murder.

I usually take the stance that an issue is an issue is an issue, and while I still do in all reality, these sorts of problems that would've resulted in an instant replacement program five years ago, are happening multiple times a year now, and studios just can't afford to do large scale replacements that often. QC needs to be better, and it's baffling to me that last year didn't result in these places beefing up QC.

Personally, given WB’s track record with audio on other releases - I think they have files mixed up somewhere in their databases. I don’t think it’s intentional what they’re doing. In their eyes, it may all be correct, but then someone loads the wrong file up. They’ll fix it.

@@JeffRauseo In Germany, when all the Rocky films came out on Blu-ray, Rocky I to V had the same lower pitch issue with the German dubs. It was reported by a multitude of people, yet nothing happened. Then in 2014 when the first Rocky was remastered, they fixed its audio, but left II to V as is, still not even responding to the demands. And now with the 4K set, after people again found the sound to be unfixed, the only statement WB gave is that there’s no plans to change anything. WB certainly may not have made these mistakes on purpose, but they sure don’t give a damn about correcting them.

thanks for a true complet review for the release , did u find the other issues some person said ( One shot in the theatrical cut of Rocky IV apparently opens up to 1.78:1 instead of 1.85:1 (the shot appears at about 10:17 into the film) or not there or not long enough to see it ?

Great review, Jeff. I think the reason that Rocky riding in a golf cart with his son shot in Rocky III is grainy is there was a dissolve just preceding it, from the newspaper clipping with Rocky and Thunderlips. This dissolve necessitated an optical film dupe. That shot is not the o-neg, but an interneg. The only way to resolve this is to find the o-neg of those two shots and digitally recomposite them.

My biggest issue was the packaging. Not sure if the damages are from factory to distributor or from the distributor (amazon) to the postal service. Mine arrived with a broken case and I have seen others report their copies also arrived broken.

Hey Jeff, Great review but, there's one thing you have missed, with the Rocky vs Drago cut 4k bluray. The new Dolby Atmos remastered soundtrack is missing!! It only has a DTS HD 5.1, as the 4k Apple TV movie stream has the Atmos track..so this is a big mistake from Warner Bros..so they need to do a disc replacement for sure..for Rocky 4, Directors cut.

Kind of a bummer that these movies did not have a new transfer. And have the same audio… I wouldn’t be surprised to see these remastered in 4K with new transfers and mixes 4-5 years down the road… I think I am gonna wait for now. Blu Ray is fine. I may pick up part 4 when they sell these separately to get the director’s cut. But otherwise, I wanna wait… 🤷‍♂️

Speaking as a total nerd, here, that's why I enjoy getting the digital files that you mentioned. If something needs be brightened or sounds need to be pitch-corrected, or whatever it may be, a file lets you go in and customize those things till your heart's content, using just a basic video editing program and perhaps a slightly more sophisticated sound editing program. I don't have to choose between R4 and R4 DC, because like several other fans out there, I combined the best of both to make the most satisfying R4 experience I could possibly ask for and I love it. Files are the way to go. All of that said, thank you for explaining the differences and potential issues to expect when watching the 4K collection. It was so helpful! I look forward to checking out some of your other videos, my friend.

My point is that well-worn movies like this have the impossible job of having a modern remaster while sparking all the nostalgic feelings that came with watching them 30 years ago, perhaps on a snowy 13" TV or VHS tape. .

I love your videos and it’s interesting hearing you talk about the quality differences. I have an original copy deathly hallows part 2 blu ray and have always thought it to be grainy in the dark scenes. If I bought a new copy blu ray release would it be different quality do you think? Also, the missing music cue from Rocky, is present in the 5.1 mix of Rocky II, which recaps the end of the fight from Rocky.

I have a theory about the pitch issues with Rocky II: basically back in the dvd era ‘pal’ discs (region 2 discs) had an issue due to encoding were audio was 4% higher. To correct this sometimes studios lowered the pitch to avoid this issue.

Hi Jeff, if the audio and aspect ratio issues don't bother you and the average consumer that's fine however if these faults are not highlighted then it will ultimately lead to the studios lowering there quality control and subsequently releasing below par products. I love the fact they include the original theatrical audio on some releases as most times the 5.1 tracks add sounds and effects which simply do not fit the sound mix which the sound editor of the time created. So if its advertised as having it then it should be there and if not it should be corrected. Ultimately if your happy with this release (and I love your honesty) that's fine personally i'm not and many others won't be either and will stick with my Blu-ray release until its corrected and the inevitable 6 film box set arrives later this year.

Even if these audio issues might seem "not that noticeable" to some people, IMO it is still an issue that should not be present in a premium product like a 4K box set being sold to collectors, there needs to be better quality control than that. Furthermore, more audiophile-minded people or people who love these films and are intricately familiar with them ARE going to be more likely to really notice this issue and be really bothered by it, even if the "average consumer" would not, and again this is supposed to be a premium-level product. For example, my favorite album of all time is A Night at the Opera by Queen. If I purchased what was supposed to be a premium version of that album, and it was pitched wrong, even very slightly, I would *absolutely* notice and be upset by that (and in that case, someone like me would be the kind of person that that particular product would be catered to)

@@JeffRauseo the only way to know whos wrong, is to hear a 35mm print or a 16mm print for cinemas. but as far as i know, the pitch is wrong because they used PAL masters already pitch corrected, and then to adapt it to 24p, they pitched corrected again! causing slow pitch

In regards to audio pitch while I haven't seen any of the Rocky movies so I can't weigh in on that I can at least tell you that I'm able to notice the pitch difference between a modern release of a movie compared to an old pal DVD release from Europe. Long explanation short, European TVs ran at 50 Hz so when movies would eventually be released on the home formats over in Europe where they use pal instead of NTSC, they would release the movie at 25 frames per second. And because the movie is slightly faster The audio would also be at a slightly higher pitch. I never noticed it with dialogue but whenever there is background music I can tell immediately. Whenever I watch back one of those DVDs what I end up doing with VLC is going to the audio effects section and turning the pitch down by about 0.8 semitones which corrects the audio pitch. And I'm sure I'm not alone and being able to here pitch issues like that.

In fact, when I watched Atlantis the lost empire on Netflix for the first time since I was a kid I noticed the the music sounded better than I remembered so I went back to my old DVD (for additional context as a kid I would watch the English audio track on my DVD copy which was purchased in Germany which is where my family lived at the time) which in had to play a computer because my family had moved back to the US at that point and yeah, I found the pitch was higher on the European DVD release. I know It's not entirely related to the Rocky discussion but I figured an anecdote from my childhood experiences could offer a different perspective.

Yeah. Sadly I always find it noticeable and one of my favourite shows Buffy sadly has arguably the worst HD remaster in existence on Disney so I watch the DVDs, but it can bug me when I notice people's voices higher and especially songs going faster and higher than I remember

I’m Totally fine with my laserdisc versions of these films. I literally don’t see any difference between the 4K and my laserdisc copies. IMO

I was expecting a full rocky 1-6 4k boxset release, I was hoping for a limited edition one. Was thinking they could make Rocky's boxing glove, have the 4k dics in like a set with it. It seems they don't really think like that on some franchises. Like Hellraiser has the scarlett set and pinhead statue. Yet Rocky on VHS, Dvd, Blu-Ray and now 4k, just have normal boxsets. Nothing major or extra with them, its a shame really. Hopefully we may see something like that in the future.

I'm pretty sure only the first film was restored in 4K back in 2014? The rest are all new scans. The HDR grades were all new though.

Just Bought the Rocky Collection on 4k and watched the First Two Movies with 5.1 Audio ? Not to be a Winger but I had to Turn up my Sound Bar due to the Dialogue being Very Low , But the Music was OK. Not Good when you buy a Premium movie Set and you cannot hear them Speak. Usually my Sound Bar sits on 13 , But with Rocky I needed to Crank it up to the High 20s to hear Dialogue . Apart from that I enjoyed this 4k Re release . Once again thanks to Jeff for his Channel and Reviews , Keep up the Good Work .

from what I have seen, it might be my tv but it doesn't seem to have a very good picture quality..... sometimes it looks like they were shot in super 16mm, and the colors look really desaturated and dull.... rocky VI looked the best tho! (the directors cut) the colors and the contrast looked REALLY good. Wish the rest looked as good

The rest just won’t ever look that good unfortunately. They weren’t filmed in a way that would really help much. But if they do remaster them all, they could be slightly better. Slightly.

I can see both sides of this discussion. I agree with the collectors and enthusiasts who are holding WB to a high standard, and holding them accountable for misrepresenting the features of these discs. I can also see Jeff's point - just enjoy the movies! For me, I'll probably pick up Rocky IV steelbook at Best Buy. Maybe scoop up some of the others if they hit a discount.

true the majority who buy these are not connoisseurs, they just aren't fussed with minor issues..for them i don't think they notice any differences...my cousin for example is happy with his Rocky DVD's from mid 2000's

I'm a big Rocky fan, but think I'll hold of for now. I already own the blurays and although I loved Rocky vs Drago the price of the set and the exclusion of Rocky Balboa really sour this set for me. I'll pick it up if ever gets around $35 or just wait and see if a complete boxset or an individual release of Rocky vs Drago ever gets released.

I work in audio, and you're likely talking about playback speed, which does affect pitch. You're right that most people can't identify that the playback speed is 1-2% different, but it still subconsciously affects their overall enjoyment. In addition to affecting the pitch, it also affects pacing, and the "brightness" of the audio (like when you adjust the treble on your stereo to get a "brighter" or "duller" sound). This is actually a mixing trick I use to my advantage often. It's subtle enough that they don't know exactly what's different, but it changes their opinion on the mix drastically. All that said, I'm the kind of person who notices a 1-2% change in playback speed, and it drives me crazy 😅

Seems absolutely ridiculous to release a boxset from a SIX film series and only include FOUR of them. I don't care what the reasons are - whether it's to release alongside Creed III or because Stallone is tinkering on a Rocky V recut - this is dumb as hell. Add on top of this the strange issues with the release (like the fake mono track & the changing aspect ratios in Rocky IV) and really, this is a nonsense release. 4K is firmly established as a premium product for the serious collector. This is NOT the format to under-deliver on.

Just watched the Stallone Cut of IV (4k sony projector on 110inch screen). The Grain overwhelming. The newer scenes the grain was some time unbearable. And the additional 7 minutes of rocky 3 recap in the intro was so buzzy. The movie itself was a good change in tone.

im going to pick this one up. ive been wanting to got hold of the rocky movies for a while, but for some reason haven't managed. As for pitch differences, it could be 60Hz regions vs 50 Hz regions. because the 24fps of movies fits better in 60Hz and sometimes, for 50Hz regions they just speed the 24 up to 25 which makes it slightly higher and faster. id forgotten about it until i got some star trek DVDs that were PAL encoded at 25fps and although that's how i grew up watching them, they still sounded "off" compared to 24fps streaming versions, but im willing to take that tradeoff for the higher pixel count on uk DVDs (576p vs 480 for US) even though its much rarer in blu rays it can still happen.

the release is the same all over the world. The issue here is that the sound sources were PAL masters ALREADY pitch corrected, and some dum pitch corrected again!, causing a slow pitch!. Rocky II all audio tracks suffers from this

I'm pretty happy with my purchase of this set my only complaint individual packaging packaging and slip covers. I don't like the artwork on this set but it's nothing that a 5x7 of the original rocky 4 poster. Trimmed it down just a little bit and slid into the cover of the case can't fix and that's what I did. Apart from that rocky four is the only one I have watched and it looked and sounded wonderful.

I agree about the issues being blown out of proportion. But at the same time, they were not great. I did feel that the first one was incredible. For me, the second was the weakest transfer. I did not notice those audio pitch issues. There was one spot in #1 that was off. But nothing to complain about. My opinion is this was a cash grab for Warner to get these out as Creed III was coming out to theaters. Like you mentioned about the Director's cut looking better, shows that they didn't put the effort into every transfer.

I noticed the pitch issue with rocky 2 pretty early on. That is completely unacceptable and I'm annoyed that your really disregarding and downplaying it pretty bad. You've even made videos in the past calling out studios on poor quality control which is super weird that your not on them like you should. This is what's going to kill the physical media in general if these studios don't get there shit together. On top of that, every disc has some sort of issue and your saying that's blowing it out of proportion? Come on Jeff we shouldn't be complacent about this.
