That movie was made for the theater 🎥 👏 All the sounds were incredible. The camera angles were incredible. Even the storyline fit perfectly. All around incredible movie to watch.
Born in 85' this movie was for lack of a better word flawless... it's impossible for them to make movies like this nowadays special thanks to Tony Scott and family this movie truly inspired my life!
Tony Scott was an amazing filmmaker, so underrated. True Romance was a masterpiece, Crimson Tide was a very unique war movie, great too. I loved The Last Boy Scout too.
tbh this movie is underrated bc people see it as a top gun regurgitation. the stories are similar but the film making genius that went into this is insane. this will always be one of my favorite movies.
But it's not remotely a top gun anything. Tom Cruise character was modeled after Tim Richmond. Who came to nascar from open wheel. Seems Hollywood done Tim dirty just like nascar did by not mentioning this fact.
When I was a kid I did view this movie as racings version of Top Gun… but it’s not and they both stand on their own. I was 10 years old in 1995 and got the best Xmas gift of my entire life when I got both Top Gun and Days of Thunder on VHS Lmao. We had just recently got TV and a VHS player for the first time at home so it was HUGE to me. Today my kids watch garbage on my iPad lol. Damn I sound old…
@@bradsanders407 Agreed, I think it's a lazy take to just call it Top Gun on wheels. It's similar to most other action movies of the 80s and 90s but it has its own unique story and Robert Duvall took that film to the next level.
Hanz Zimmer talking about writing the score was a great little insight. There are several points, which, for me, always evoke strong emotion and memories of watching this movie with my dad when it first came out. The first is when Harry is finishing up the first car, and then the music ramps up from that slow somber tone to the main theme style with that electric guitar lead hitting when you see the car on the track for the first time in the sunlight.. and then at the end where Cole is struggling whether or not to trust that he won't crash again through the smoke and again when the drums hit and the main theme drops upbeat with that guitar... I get choked up both times. My dad and I both loved this movie so much. He even would buy me the little diecast movie cars when we would stop at the Exxon when I would go to work with him that summer. I have the full set displayed on my wall. I wish I could tell him how much that all meant to 10-year-old me and how much it still means to 43-year-old me. And the weird thing is. Dad and I were never NASCAR fans. But we sure loved this movie.
Born in 1983 myself. Loved this movie as a kid. Saw it so much that I could recite lines from just about any part. Had no idea until today that Hans Zimmerman scored it. Makes sense now as adult. So many talented artists at every level of production!
He nailed the Golden Hour. The song brings a smile to my face when I hear it and I see the opening scene and remember how much I loved NASCAR from the 80s to 01. I miss all the guys involved in NASCAR during that time. Especially Davey, Doc Punch, Jarrett, and Baker
Damn I love this movie. I was 2 years old when it came out. It was my favorite movie. To this day. Having seen it countless times, it still gives me goosebumps and an adrenaline rush when I watch it. Not knowing this side of the film just makes it even more badass. Solidifies my opinion of it being one of the best sports films out there.
"Because bigger is better" - quotes Miss Pat Carroll from September 15, 1985. "Days of Thunder" was Tony Scott's 1990 sports movie was bigger and better in the tradition of 1969's "Winning" plus even more exciting, breathtaking, thrilling, intriguing, fascinating, electrifying, gripping, lively, moving, rousing and touching than "Revenge" and others did. It was nominated for an Oscar for best sound - Donald O. Mitchell, Rick Kline, Kevin O'Connell, Charles M. Wilborn in 1991.
I'm french and fell in love with Nascar when I was 10 in the 90's... Unfortunately we didn't have access to Nascar races back in the day. My only enjoyment was racing magazine, very sporadically. I'll always remember the first day I watched DoT, It was everything I expected from a good racing movie; The feel of speed magically directed by the underrated Tony Scott, the connection between the driver and the crew chief, and the fear of death.... Lastly I'll tell you what, I watched this film 5 times in a row; just to begin with.
I've been a NASCAR fan since the late 1970s. The sport has changed a great deal since then and it's no coincidence that the release of "DOT" in 1990 also coincided with the start of the rise in national and global popularity of NASCAR that leveled off and has been on the wane since Dale Earnhardt's tragic death in 2001. NASCAR was huge during this time and "DOT" really helped kicked that off. Tom Cruise was, and still is, the kind of movie star that people will go and see no matter what the movie is about. "DOT" brought it legions of fans from all across America and the world. And there has never been a more welcoming sport and scene than NASCAR. And although the sport is not as popular now as it was in the 1990's, I am pleased to see that that welcoming spirit continues on to this day. If you are trackside and you get a flat tire, fellow fans will rush to help you change it. Run out of food or drink during the tailgate or forget some important item? Your tailgate neighbor is always there to happily bail you out. I have taken many people to their first race over the years and I have never had one person say they had a bad time and would never go back. With all of that said "DOT" has some thorns to go with its roses, of course. As a summer, popcorn, blockbuster film it is a wonderful experience and everyone should see the film. It captures the spirit of NASCAR, the track day spectacle of it all, etc...but, the two things that did not age well on its release and have not aged well here in the 21st century are 1) All the shifting...there are a few ovals where there is shifting, but generally on an oval you wind it up to the top gear and leave it in the top gear until there is a yellow or you are coming into the pits. Yes, it's very dramatic to hear the drivers in the movie talk about passing someone and then they show them grabbing a gear and making the pass. But, that's not how NASCAR passes are made. 2) The beating and banging...yes, there is a great deal of contact in stock car racing, especially on the short tracks and yes, drivers have been seriously injured and or killed as a result of excessive contact. But, the way it's depicted in the film is a gross exaggeration.
I still love watching this movie , it really gave that thinking thing about the drivers and family’s , and I want to thank Tony Scots widow for showing so much in this video
Theres not a single movie out there that recreated the feel of speed DoT gave to the public. Not even close. This is the best petrolheads movie ever made.
This movie was a major part of my childhood and I also have the matching slot cars both the pink and the green one I must watch this VHS 100 times as a kid
They were lucky they took interest in NASCAR during one of it’s primes, maybe THE prime. Early 90’s the sport was huge, a real spectacle. And it was gritty, but with some of that early 90’s “almost modern” vibe.
I continue to watch this movie from being a young man and seeing it for the first time .. I'll never get tired of days of thunder and seeing Cole trickle move up the ranks and fight rowdy burns for the win in nascar
@@Lowered_2010 My pitch: Cole’s son and/or Rowdy’s son wants to get into NASCAR, so he and Harry look into creating a team for him (or both), but Cole’s wife (or maybe ex-wife) is against it.
I remember watching this movie with my father when I was about 4 years old. It developed my interest in cars and motorsports which I still have today. Anytime this move pops up on, I am sure to watch it. Great memories.
Many thanks for this big archive bro the world need more people like you to remembering the past because in 40 years this archive are very rare so this is important !!!
THe car scenes was naturally heavy and focused. Still the best racing car movie scenes 30+ years on, it was just so real and make you feel you're in it. And not to mention the legendary lines in the script like "Harry, I'm dropping the hammer!!" LOL. Legendary culture setting overall. I wish we could see more of this in today's age. Less CG, Less fake sounds and more raw footage.
I love that line too. It randomly pops into my head sometimes. Then Robert Duvall going “No you’re not!” And the car just taking off out of the corner. Just a cool sequence of audio and visual 🤣
Pat Benatar, actress/singer since 1976 and Disney favorite since 1994: When it comes to sound like lots of editing/mixing such as dialogue/adr, sound effects, foley and music in the making of Tony Scott's Oscar nominated Days of Thunder, just make sure everything works out for the best. It shows how much we care about each other and about the sound of Days of Thunder.
My favorite film as a kid until 2001 when Apocalypse Now Redux came out. This film had so many great things going for it with a amazing director in Tony Scott who could make a dog taking a shit look beautiful in his prime before he got sick R.I.P. The first time Hans Zimmers actually had a good score, not to mention legendary writer Robert Towne who was script doctor on The Godfather, Bonnie & Clyde and so many others.
I dont think I'll ever forgot Days of Thunder. It is my most watch movie as a kid of all time and still to this day at 36 I've never watched any other movie more that a handful of times. It is a legendary movie and kids now of days still fall in love with a 32 year of movie. For the very very small few who hasn't watched days of Thunder must really hate Tom cruise. I love him but my wife hates him and don't like any movies he in. Such a big loss for her.
I was in high school when they filmed the beach scene. My dad was a sergeant with the beach department and I was one of the police explorers. They brought us down to keep that section of beach closed to traffic, so we were able to watch them film all day. It was an incredible experience.
Did they have someone actually clean up the mess, like the broken glass and plastic? Did they do a good job? I always wondered how they would clean up that broken glass on the beach
Day oaf Thunder turned me on to NASCAR, and appreciate Tom Cruise as an actor. When you look at the rest of the cast and realize how amazing it is you really appreciate it even more. Robert Duvall playing a Southerner and nailing it. The man went from the Godfather to Pitt crew chief. Who does that!? I always thought Michael Rooker was playing himself. He seemed so natural in that role. For a long time Whenever I saw John C. Reily in anything I would say that' the guy from Days of Thunder. And least we not forget Nicole Kidman who was amazing as well
im 35... used to cry for my mother to put it on the vcr when i was a baby... impossible to tell you how many times ive seen it... damn... look at my photo in here... its my favorite movie ever... and im not even american... im fckin brazilian lol
I just realized why I love this movie, because Han Zimmer did the score….. look at all the movies he’s been apart of and you realize his music is a major part of getting the audience emotionally invested in it
Had to laugh when Hans Zimmer was talking about how Tony Scott kept saying make it weirder. "Don't say that to me twice; I'll give you weird." Suddenly, in my head, I'm picturing Tom Cruise driving through the wreckage on the track, and the score in the background going DESI DESI BASARA BASARA!
My GF at the the time and I are in the helicopter scene at DIS, along with a bunch of others. We were extras for the filming. My 15 minutes lol. Good times. Since we were also at the 500, I guess we're in the crowd scenes as well.
Incase no one noticed, not only have some of the best motion and still shots ever produced were in the Golden Hour.. also, More Racers of all sports, have been claimed in those very same Hours.
its the only movie i went to the cinema, and when the cars blew by in the opening, my eyes were like dinner plates, and i literally said OMFG. i knew i was in for the ride then!!!
The whole nascar world didn’t “open their doors to us” Guys like Dale Earnhardt and Darrell Walt rip were pretty 😤 at the time having these movie camera cars out on the race track getting in the way or the paparazzi in the garage area. They were not amused at all😉
I always wondered how they got some of those shots. I didn't know they actually put a couple cars in the race (for 100 miles but still). Pretty amazing. Similar to the whole Brad Pitt thing a couple months ago in Formula 1 except there was no way F1 would let him drive next to the big boys in a race lol.
I was living in Daytona going to Embry Riddle when they were filming. I remember the big deal they made closing off the beach for the rental car scene.
