Do you know if you are a puller or thrower of the golf swing. In this video Mike Dero made it simple to understand the difference between being a puller of thrower of the golf swing.
i am 86 years old and been playing 62 years and have watched tons of you tube instruction. I have no idea if your video will help me but it is without a doubt the finest golf instruction I have ever seen. And I want to thank you so so so much. I really learned a lot from you. Take care my friend. Allen
I thought the same thing. I've seen 100s of videos by dozens of instructors, and this is the first time I've ever seen the swing described with so much clarity. I really like the way he doesn't prescribe a specific "correct" way.
I've watched lots of other guys but Mike is the only one who consistently WOWS me with how clearly and simply he explains things. If every golfer was required to watch Mike's videos before ever getting on a course, there would be no more 5 hour rounds waiting for guys to find their balls on every hole.
I'm struggling between the two since I do not remember when. For the first time in my golfer life, 55 years, I understand the issue. I have no words to thank you properly. (from Roma, Italy)
I've followed many RU-vid golf channels- came upon yours inadvertently- I feel you offer the best and most useful information of all- please keep posting-thanks!
I used to call it left vs. right hand-dominated swing and a bit confused to hear different instructions. This clearly explains the key differences and pros/cons.
I can't believe after 20 years of playing and 5 of consuming youtube videos trying and failing to measurably improve, this is the first time I've ever heard of this.
When I was much younger, I played very well . . . carried a 2-hdcp through my 20s. Now I'm almost 80 and getting back to golf after a 23-year layoff. Your video just made me realize I've been a thrower, sometimes trying to be a puller because I thought that's what the best players do. Watching your video several times and watching Fred Couples about a thousand times has made it clear to me that a smooth, effortless, throwing-type swing will reap bountiful rewards on the course, for ME, when I finally get out and play. Thanks so much for explaining the difference and clarifying that it's "OK" to throw.
I see your one arm swing and cry. Your 1 arm throwing is so pure compared to my 2 arms 2 legs 2 hips 2 shoulders 2 wrists all added together. I forgot there is also 1 chest involved. Wish i can fly over a take a week long lesson from you. Please keep it coming. You are the best.
Lifelong ‘puller’ here. I never understood the right hand ‘throwing’ idea as nobody explained there are two different types of swings. I just tried some right hand one armed drills with a Ben Hogan type right elbow (lower right elbow on downswing, forearm up, L shape like skipping a stone) and it’s a huge difference. This instruction/explanation really helps me understand how to put the two together. Thank you!
I'm 75 and have been watching many U Tube "lessons" and was convinced that I had to change to the puller method or I could not compress the ball correctly. Ain't gonna happen with an old body. This completely cleared up this concept! Great explanation . Thanks
Wow!! What a great instructional video. I am 63 years of age, have been playing golf since I was 11 years old and had a hiatus of 35 years away from the game, as life got in the way and I have never thought, until now, which type of golfer I was - a puller or a thrower. I think you have sorted out my problem Mike!! I am certain that when I was in my teenage years and playing off single figure handicaps, I was definitely a puller. But now in my 60s, it has been very disturbing to me that I have never been able to get back that effortless, powerful swing I once had. And now I know why. I need to be a thrower. It makes so much sense. I have always loved Freddie Couples’ effortless swing but I never considered how he achieved it. Now I know!!! Thank you so much Mike. Brilliant instruction!! I can’t wait to get down on the range. Best regards from the Giant’s Causeway Coast of Northern Ireland. 😄👍⛳️☘️
Very useful explanation. I'm definitely a puller but It clears up some questions I've had about the way certain players can hit the ball the way they do. So thank you
I’ve seen countless golf video’s. Every once and a while you come across a concept that has not been explained. This one is a in that category, really well done.
Wow...thank you! My best range sessions and rounds of play I've felt that I was effortlessly throwing the clubhead at the ball. But have never been able to determine what lessons apply to my swing. This has cleared things up in my mind immensely!
Oh man , what a fantastic video-master-analize-class. I mean I never thought about that . what clarity of ideas. Why , after so many teachers and videos , for so many years , nobody, I say , nobody told me that. I am very grateful about that. I am in my 55 and I have been trying to be a puller all my live, when i tried the other swing people told me , this swing was poor and i will not be able to improve. Oh my godness , I am so happy today. thanks again sir.
You said it..........clearly, quıckly and simply........pull versus throw and different swing (and sometimes different people-golfers). I have trained many and muted the concept but you have made the best explanation. Appreciated!!
This makes a lot of sense to me, my golf pro has been coaching me too pull through the golf swing, but as I’m over 65 it’s a struggle, your throwing style makes an awful lot more sense and may hold a key to me finding some angles in the swing and increased speed through the ball. Really useful video thank you.
I have been told since I started playing golf that I have to use my left hand. Recently I have been thinking why on earth can I not use my right hand while I am a right handed person. When I see this video, it confirms that I can use my right hand to throw the ball. The explanation is superb. I believe this is one of the best video about golf swing.
This is why its so important to take golf lessons from someone who teaches your golf swing style. also why there are so many contradictions in instructions. I am a Thrower and my game has improved 100% as I am a senior. The puller style will mess up your body if you are not fit and young to swing like that. NIce to see a video that explains the differences so clearly.
Very good point. That should be the number 1, 1st thing the instructor should determine, then give you the proper tips for you. If your instructor is a Puller you are a Thrower, he will mess up your game
I agree with the comment that Jim Hardy's book The Plane Truth is a good reference. He talks about RIT and LOP Right inside throw and Left outside pull as 2 methods to swing and shows examples of Tour Players that swing those different ways. Thanks for the great video it was very clear and helpful!
5 months ago I came across this vidio and have gone thru many iterations of self analysis and arrived at this conclusion. i am 1 part puller and 1 part thrower where the thrower acts like puller and vice versa. i want to thank you for showing me the differences between the two. it really is an eye opener for me. i have decided that i am a thrower and will revisit this lesson over and over again. please take care and stay healthy.
Very interesting, many top Golf schools advocate one over the, moving in and out of 2 concepts or using tips for one and moving the body or arms in opposite concept is main source of so much confusion. Some instructors saw left arm is not a Puller”, others suggest you must pull and rotate left. Thanks for basic concept that certainly clarified my dilemma. 👍
Great advice from someone with the perspective. Would be great if people starting out in golf were given this choice to make. Then they would know which instruction was right for them. For instance,it’s no good being a natural thrower and then be told you need to get as open as possible at impact.
Thank you thank thank you. That was crystal clear! All this time I’ve been trying to be both a thrower and a puller, a hybrid, and not understanding what was happening. I’m a thrower! Yes!!
Oh. My!! That's why I'm struggling with my waist back pain. I started learning golf from mid 40s but my teacher make me learn Puller's swing. I realized it was wrong after my waist already broken so I was changing my swing into easy one from a year ago. That was thrower in this video. Maybe Hitter or Swinger would be the similiar expression. Thanks for this video!!
After many years of well intentioned golf teachers trying to make me a puller I’ve finally realized I can do what I’m comfortable with and utilize my right arm and throw the club. I focus on keeping my left arm straight through impact to help locate the club where I want it to be. It’s taken having a net and a launch monitor in my garage to just play around with things and come to this conclusion. I’m 60 years young. It’s never too late to learn. 😊
First time in my golf history of fifteen year I now figure out. I was always confused whether pul or throw. Now I will try to throw .thanks for this lesson
If I were to go practice one hand shots I’d hurt somebody on the range. But glad I found this video. My best round my only swing thought was throwing the club. Had a couple surgeries since and can’t find it again but now I understand because I’m winding up the pull which my former swing coach teaches. Hope this helps. Looking forward to hitting the range again…with 2 hands in club though.
Thank you truly, this explains a lot. I've been golfing for less than a year and at the beginning, I would usually hook the ball on misses but I was fairly consistent and it felt natural. In the pursuit of more speed and and fixing my hook, I learned a completely different swing, which frankly still doesn't feel natural to me and I've started hitting slices now on my misses, but when I do hit it well, it goes really far. Looking back, it was probably a mistake and I would like my old swing back but I had no idea how I actually swung it when I just did it naturally. Now at least I have some pointers.
This really helped! I've been trying to be a puller but realized I'm already comfortable and doing the thrower style so I'm going to stick with that and refine it. Thanks!
Really eye opening, would love to see you do pull swing with right arm and throw with left arm, that would be worth watching. Very illuminating. Thank you.
Learning to pull catch and throw is how I swing, went from 110 to 80 in one year so honestly not sure if it a combo of these two or not but that is how it feels, self taught
Thank you! Started as a junior player pulling every swing but now nearing 60 It just hurts my body. About time to just throw and be good in my short game. Thanks again
A really useful and interesting video. I think I am right in saying it is aligned with Homer Kelley's book that draws a distinction between 'swingers and hitters'. This is the only video I've ever seen that highlights the difference.
If it hasn't already been done, a follow up on hand position at impact would be good. I'm sure a lot of people will be confused by pictures of pros with their left wrists bowed forward at impact. Very difficult if you are a thrower.
I realised I'm a thrower today randomly on the course... Figured out i was snatching at the handle of the club... Downswing now feels really long and slow and feels like it takes ages to get to the ball, almost like a long slow cast of the club. so much time to square everything off. Your correct about the hooking though, threw a couple of hooks on the driver, but somehow knew instantly what I'd done where before I would be guessing...but contact was pure and gained 10 yards almost instantly with what felt like zero effort, With a fizzing sound as the ball left...
I hit straigher when i think of pulling the ball off the ground. For one thing you must have lag to pull, the shaft should be leaning forward before impact. This video is very clear and helpful, thanks for sharing.
The throw method is definitely easier on the body and is good for “feel” because we do everything every day with ours hands, BUT the pull method using the whole body to move the club is more consistent in regards to club face alignment at impact, ONCE you figure out the sequence of motions to end up with a square face at impact. The throw method creates more clubface inconsistency at impact but is simpler and easier to get some kind of reasonable results. Great explanation video though!!!
I'm a natural lefty that plays right handed golf. I always pulled through the ball, with my timing, strength and club face awareness in my left hand and forearm. Now in my 70's age wise, I would say I have become a thrower because I just don't have the leg strength any more. One worked great when younger and the other came about ten years ago as I got older. Great video, this should help a lot of players.
So Manuel De La Torre preached that throwing concept and I really gelled with his book/videos without knowing that’s what it was. As I’ve tried working on drawing the ball more and coming more inside out I’ve noticed a lot more of the pulling concept occurring and it’s been more difficult for me. It’s nice to hear these two concepts defined and I’m definitely going back to being a thrower before this season begins!
This video can be a bit misleading because the pulling motion sounds like it might have a lot of tension. But top players never swing with tension. They all feel the weight of the club head. They all try to deliver it to the ball with correct sequencing and rotation. They certainly don't cast the club like he was doing.
Mike, how does this concept of being a "puller" or a "thrower" square with the concepts you've talked about from David Lee in Gravity Golf? It seems like you'd have to be a "thrower" to be tension free. Is that right? Also, what concepts from Gravity Golf do you agree with and how have you adapted those into your teaching? Thanks for your help!
Great video. I should be a thrower, but am a puller. At one time I switched to throwing and increased my driving by 50+ yards and irons by 20+ yards. The only problem was I didn’t know what had changed. My swing thought was stay behind the ball. Eventually because I didn’t understand I turned into a puller and all my new found distance left me. THANKS.
Throwing is so much more efficient. I started golf as a puller until I learned about throwing. The problem is that I was using pulling fundamentals while throwing.
i used to be a thrower for years but i've gone to more of a pivot driven swing and now i'm a puller. i'm left handed but golf righty so i'm very dominant with my left side but i still have a lot of feeling in my right hand and left so the clubface is square coming through but like you say i have to guard against a pull.
I was a puller. Just 10 yards off Dan Pohl’s 274 of -I forget what year- PGA record year. At 63, I overhauled my swing to the Mike Austin method but even just before, I started to think why let my clumsy left control the clubhead. MA throws with the right. But also flings a frisbee with the left. Hogan said he wanted three right hands. Bobby said left arm control but studying his videos, I detect a powerful right hand release. I’m all about right hand control in this ageless debate. Austin saw Tiger at his Masters debut and said that his body won’t last; sure enough, Tiger’s body is wrecked. Austin was hitting 300+ through his 70s until his stroke. Great video, btw and thanks.
I’ve been a puller for most of my 36 years of playing. But at 57 years old it’s getting harder and harder to move the club this way. I’ve been gradually losing distance to the point where my 8 iron goes about 125 yards. Well, I tried hitting a few 8 irons with the thrower method and I hit my 8 iron on average 20 yards further! Wow! Thanks so much!
