Good in-depth and above all honest review . I now see why people like them so much ! I would hunt one out just for the charging experience alone now I understand the difference thanks to your explanation...Good to get a review that isn’t just a blabbing Tesla fanboy blowing all over the place about how good things are .....when they are not all roses all the time ! Another great video Winter ! Well done

An excellent in-depth report on the Model 3. As a rural driver I appreciate the mention of dimming the dashboard, that’s vital for me on darkened roads. In the U.K. we have discovered that the made in China vehicles have much fewer paint and panel gap issues. Roll on Model Y from Berlin!

When I noticed this video was 52 minutes plus I was doubtful that I would get through the whole thing in one go. It was no problem. And, it wasn’t because there was a lot of interesting action. Most of the time was just spent listening to Owen sitting in the driver’s seat talking with just a few snippets of other footage worked in as appropriate. This was truly a worthwhile video to watch. The delivery speed, logic and making sure the context was clear before getting in too deep was exceptional. A very well balanced presentation IMHO. Thank you.

I almost passed on this due to length, but then I decided to run it in the background while I did some reading. I got totally sucked in, and have the best sense of the vehicle I've been able to gather so far. Even though others have shared their compliments on the review, I had to add mine. Good content, good presentation. That was a quick 52 minutes! Gotta go watch your Bolt video now...(I've got the same model).

Overall very thorough. I own a 21 Model 3 D/M L/R. I find the wipers to be OK, on auto, not great not terrible. Screen also has an auto setting, which I have no problem with. Interior overheat protection tends to take care of issues related to glass roof and heat. Panel gaps, trim, and paint, fair to OK. I love the way it drives and handles, driver profiles and voice commands tend to take care of pretty much anything that might be considered a UI issue. I have had no issues to date.

Winter, the Bolt does indeed hold at a stop. There are two ways it can do this. In L mode, it will automatically hold after it comes to a stop from lifting off the accelerator. In D mode, as you come to a stop with your foot on the brake, just tap on the Regen Paddle behind the steering wheel and it will automatically hold you there. You don't need to hold the paddle down, just press it for a second and release. Then you can let off the brake.

I ended up selling my 2020 Kona Electric for exactly the same reason (sold it for a profit in March this year), and replaced it with a black Tesla Model 3 (mine is a 2021 long range). I went with a new one because I wanted the improved cold weather efficiency with the heat pump, and honestly the used Model 3 prices here in Oregon are only slightly less than new Model 3s. And I’m now I’m working with GM to buy back my 2019 Bolt because they’ve reduced the capabilities of the car and not fixed the issue. I appreciate seeing a review that is honest about the real world experience of the Tesla. I agree with almost everything you said.

I bought a Model S used from Tesla early in the Model 3 release because I prefer hatchbacks and at the moment they were pretty much the same price. After several years I am pretty happy with it. I have driven it across the country and the Tesla routing is pretty good at letting you know what your battery will be at at, the next stop. It also will alert you along the way to slow down if something like headwinds or high speeds are making you range shorten so you may not make it. That confidence is what makes it possible to surf the bottom half of the battery where the fastest charging speeds happen, rather than charge to 80% on each stop. I think the secret weapons of Tesla are the Supercharger network which is awesome for trips, and Mobile Service. I have had them come out twice. Once for recalls on the passenger airbag and power steering bolts, and once to change a light bulb in the headlight. I could have changed the bulb, but you have to either take off a wheel, or the bumper to get at it since the access is in the wheel well and since the car comes with no spare or jack, I thought I would text Tesla and ask if it was under warranty and it was. The third secret weapon is the app. That one will be the easiest for others to copy or improve on and I think Ford will give Tesla a run pretty soon with the Mach-E and F-150 and the FordPass app which will allegedly deal with all the assorted charging networks into one bill.

Thank you for an excellent and insightful car review. Definitely one of the most informative long term reviews here on RU-vid. One minor correction: 48:10 regarding transfer of FSD, when the car swaps owners. It's exactly the opposite way around. If you buy directly from the previous owner and the car had FSD, you will get FSD. However, if the previous owner sold their car to Tesla and Tesla sells the car to you, they may sell the car to you with or without FSD depending on their liking.

Back in January, I also bought a used 2017 LR RWD Model 3, but with FSD included (I did purchase from Tesla with a 7,000 mi odometer). This is actually my first car purchase as I’m a college student. I have done some cosmetic stuff, such as a chrome delete, clear bra, window tint, rims and gotten some accessories. I recently found out the car has the alcantara headliner so that was a surprise. My issue with the car is that while driving, I may have to restart the screen due to a software bug/glitch (pressing and holding both steering wheel buttons) and I have to guess my speed, can’t use turn signals, no wipers, etc. The suspension is overall fine for me, but over speed bumps is terrible. The seat isn’t the best for my lower back after a long drive, but is generally comfortable for most drives. My previous car, 2009 Camry, had more cushion which was better for long drives. I am waiting for the next software version (v11) when it eventually comes out. I would either like CarPlay or Apple Music support if it’s ever possible. I do like the convenience of the Tesla superchargers, but I mostly charge at home. Sometimes, I do use the charger adapter at stores and malls. The phone key sometimes doesn’t always work on first try when opening the door and the app doesn’t work (update with current status) when the connection is slow. Visibility out the back isn’t the best, but the cameras are good quality (still would like a 360 cam). The wipers only bother me in misty conditions. The windshield chips too easily (I do have several small chips). The paint on my car was surprisingly in good condition and the panels were aligned. For the interior, my black console scratched easily, but everything else is fine. Living in Los Angeles, the battery will drain in the heat for cabin protection, but it does keep the interior from being an oven. Overall it is a good car. It hasn’t given me any problems and I currently have 16,000 mi on the odometer.

Great video - love your detailed and comprehensive review. The fun thing to me is that I know your car! I count the owner of Paris Auto Barn as my friend and have also bought two EV’s from him. I’ve seen his Model 3 and knew he had it for sale - seeing it at The Common Ground Country Fair - a major environmental and organic farming fair here in central Maine, where he has a booth to advertise his company as selling more sustainable transportation. I’m glad you had the opportunity to get a really good car (aside from the color - I don’t like black! :) I never thought I’d see this same Model 3 on a video on RU-vid! Great job man! May you get many happy miles out of it! P.S. Your points of the superior experience of fast charging the Model 3 vs. other EV’s is spot on. My partner has a Model 3 Rear Wheel Standard Plus model, and, as another Bolt owner admitted to me - wipes the floor with us Bolt owners when it comes to fast charging when on a road trip. For the life of me, I simply can’t understand the incompetency of Chevrolet to stick to only 50 KW of charging capacity for fast charging. Even on the new 2021-22 models plus their EUV, it remains at 50 KW only. This is bonkers when the brand it was competing with primarily at the onset was Tesla! Sure, we can maybe excuse this “overlook” of Chevy in it’s first models of the Bolt, but for them to doggedly remain with such a low fast charging capacity to this current time is in my mind inexcusable! I personally suspect that Chevy is simply not knowledgeable or tech savvy enough to even know how to make an EV that can safely fast charge at rates similar to Tesla.

I just drove my 2018 Model 3 over 3300 miles to Colorado and back and I found it very comfortable. The FSD features really helped me on the long Interstate portions of the drive. And even using Autopilot in slow driving, like driving 20mph through Garden of the God's. I allowed me to take some pictures while the car kept speed and took (most of) turns. You'll find out how amazing the Supercharger network is on the drive to Oregon. Taking a little extra time at some of those stops, like say having lunch, means that the car will need fewer stops along the way. Why don't you have the screen set to automatic brightness?

Thanks for a great and very in depth review! I also truly enjoy my mid 2018 LRRWD Model 3. I believe ours are rated 5.1 seconds 0-60. I love that this absurdly quick time still makes it the slowest Tesla! Since you mention yours is very early, I'm assuming you are in that batch of the first 10,000 units before they increased the padding in the rear seats. Did they change the front seats then too? I wonder about that, since I find my seats the most comfortable of any car I've owned. I'm glad you mention the supercharging. I've done many longer road trips up to 4000 miles, including a surprisingly comfortable 840 mile day. (Sunrise to 9pm) I believe that until someone has experienced a longer Tesla road trip they don't really understand how smooth the supercharging experience is. Wipers, I agree, have been an ongoing problem. Lately I find them pretty good and only rarely have to push the stalk to override (which I hear rumor helps it learn), but I fully agree the auto wipers need work. And yes I own a lot of $TSLA stock. Yet I'm happy to discuss the many problems. The bleeding edge of owning a modern spaceship has many drawbacks. I've owned Teslas since 2013, so I'm used to issues like right to repair and uneven service. It seems strange to me that your unlimited connectivity did not travel with your sale. It did when I bought mine used in the fall of 2018. But they do often treat "dealer" sales differently. I still advise people to only buy S and X with warranties. After having dissected a model 3 down to the body in white, I think it is a much more reliable and better designed car and therefore am not concerned about suggesting owning one out of warranty. I'm glad to hear that you are moving to Oregon, always happy to have more great people here! I hope you have a smooth trip out.

I was so interested in how you spoke about the early edition Model 3 RWD LR that I didn't even notice how long the video had been until reading the comments. Great Job Winter. I can't wait till I own my own Tesla one day. The charging infrastructure is definitely the most important part of the equation. Where I am in Tasmania they just installed a couple Superchargers at the Ferry site for the Spirit of Tasmania, which goes between Devonport and Melbourne. I had been hoping for a long time they would put one in there to encourage EV tourism in the state. I just hope they put another few in at Hobart and Queenstown or Zeehan (which when I was there in 2010 for security work was already losing its petrol station). So it definitely needs an EV option. I had to fill up before I got there so I had enough to get home. I wish you and your husband a safe trip to Oregon. May All Your Adventures Be Electric.

Winter, at 14:39 you mentioned you wished the Bolt EV had hold mode, you can get that pretty easily by pressing the left regen paddle on the steering wheel when you are stopped. After that you can release the brake. Also if you use L mode of course it will hold at a stop. I have had a Bolt for 2.5years and a Taycan. FYI All sport sedans do not have to ride hard.
@transportevolved
@transportevolved 3 года назад
I bring my Bolt to a stop without the brake all the time, but my understanding is that even holding the regen paddle, without the brake applied, the rear brake lights do not stay lit, which is a safety concern for me. The wiper control has changed very often via updates, it is also my only small complaint on ours (the last manufactured 2019 LR RWD 3). Ours has no panel gaps. Now at 32k miles, done all maintenance, tire rotations, myself. Cant imagine owning any other car, this car is 0 compromises. Only service issue was in the first 24 hrs of ownership the GPS had an issue, had to take it in and they claimed it was a software fix. My friend just got a used 14kmi LR RWD used from Tesla with FSD for $42k. Unbelievable deal. Tesla is not revoking features from cars when selling them used. They are clearly marked on tesla.com/used “Full Self Driving Capability”. There are flaws with S & X, especially for super luxury. The worst thing about the 3 might be that people associate you with those people 😂

I'd say that a big reason why people think that RWD are worse in the snow is more about oversteer of a typical RWD vs understeer of a typical FWD, but the balance of the car, traction control and even good ABS does cancel that out a bit, and a good driver can handle either safely even without the fancy stuff Tesla puts in these. That being said, I did get the AWD partly because I live in Colorado so snow, ice, unpaved mountain roads and partly because I wanted a quicker one. Agree, completely about the wipers, my model 3 is terrible at predicting when it needs more or less wiper speed when set to auto. If they had a sensor or camera of some kind at the bottom of the windshield, then it could be way better, but where the cameras it does use are located is just not exposed to nearly as much water as the part a driver looks through if there are any other vehicles, within a city block or even further on highways, kicking up water with their tires. Also agree with most of the rest of what you said, just don't have anything to add to most of it.
@jamaicantesladriver
@jamaicantesladriver 3 года назад
LOL, those wipers! Everything you said about them is accurate, but I would add that because they use cameras that sit on a tiny part of the windshield it makes it difficult (impossible) to accurately clean MY part of the glass. Since we are not going to have 100%, sleeping in the back seat, full self-driving within the normal ownership time of a car, they need to make it work well for the driver for at least a decade...so get a sensor damnit.

At 14:50 you talk about coming to a halt and tapping the brake to hold the car with the brake lights on. How can you avoid having the brake lights dazzling the driver 3 feet behind you? Do you have to put the transmission in Park to turn off the brake lights? Thanks in advance from a grumpy British driver who is fed up with sitting behind a set of brake lights at junctions, traffic lights etc!

You always have the option of buying a new 260 mile Tesla 3 with a heat pump for 40k. When the 10k tax credits kick in next year even if Tesla ups the price you will be able to buy a new 3 for under 35k. I paid 51k for my 2018 3. I received a 7.5 k federal and a 3k state tax credit. 40,500. The car with 50k miles is still worth over 30k. If you only have 35k to spend and you need a car today. A used Low mile Tesla 3 is an excellent option.

The Chevy Bolt EV totally has that feature! I use the L mode all the time and am ALWAYS stopping at tops of hills and never needing to put my foot on the break! I love that feature! My reason for not wanting a Tesla is no service center on the road that I live like my Chevrolet dealership!

If my 2017 Premier is facing down even a gradual slope, it’ll roll in L, though not facing up a slope, since it’s got anti-rollback protection. And I don’t like being stopped without brake lights to signal drivers behind me. I’ll come to a stop using one pedal driving, but then I’ll apply the brake until it’s time to move again - Winter

I am assuming since you have early model M3 with just EAP you have the older AP2.5 hardware since you don’t have FSD. Having also older M3 LR RWD but having the FSD I also have the upgraded FSD AP hardware. I do notice the AP since the upgrade has been much improved. Especially in the lane centering as two lanes merge together. Now is it perfect, no it tend to shift a little centered sometimes at the end of the merge. Also a few road splits especially if they are on a bend in road the car Enhanced AP will need to be overridden to keep it from centering and then aggressively making another lane center m to the center of the lane it decides on. While it don’t leave the lane but could startle a drive beside you if you let it happens. The few times where I waited to see what would happen there was no traffic. If there is traffic the second it starts to center off what would be center of lane I want I override it.

Just like it happened to you, the Tesla charging experience ruined the Public Charging Network for me as well. And it is not just the simplicity and reliability of the Tesla Supercharger Network, but the ability of the cars to take up to 250kwh (at least the newer models) and how efficient they are. Another thing and this is for all EVs in general, it's so easy to get spoiled by charging at home. After over a year of not going to a gas station, I had to get gas for my wife's vehicle and realized how much I don't miss going to a gas station.

Funnest car I've ever driven in snow! It's a champ going through snow. If you want to, you can break the rear end free (goose it going around a corner) just briefly before the traction control pulls it back in. So it gives you some of the fun of an old-fashioned rear wheel drive car, but when the situation is serious, it's super steady and great in the snow--even deep snow. Am SO glad I got the RWD car. Just get snow tires. Makes all the difference in the world.

Actually it is better to have a certified Tesla repairman. In California Tesla doesn’t repair their vehicles if it’s in an accident. They’ve trained Bodyshops like Kniesel’s to replace and repair parts. If you got into a fender bender and someone didn’t have the correct equipment to test sensors or cameras it could effect your FSD and probably hurt you or someone else. Remember these are very smart cars and you need something more than a friend’s garage or driveway to fix it.

It's not all that heavy for a sedan it's size. Just a couple hundred lbs more then Camry and such. Likely you have the original spring rate springs.. which Tesla would replace with more compliant springs they ship today. Also run tires closer to 35, vs. 42... Vastly improves ride, noise, and doesn't cost that much range...

James May (of top gear fame) did a video recently when the 12v battery on his model S died. It was a major headache. Why can't the battery in the car maintain the level of the 12v? Also, didn't Elon talk about removing the 12v battery in future cars?
@nettlesoup

Model S (mostly older models) had issues with 12V battery needing replacement. Model 3 and Y (and newer Model S) are without issue as far as I've heard. That includes during lockdown, when plenty of Model 3s have been parked and unused for several weeks at a time (and then only used for short trips to the supermarket). Yes, new Model S and X may get Li-Ion 12V batteries just like the recent Plaid Model S reveal. The 3 and Y may follow too.
