Our English word “love” has a vast semantic range, but the test of authentic love is sacrifice, and Jesus the good shepherd makes that supreme sacrifice for his sheep. We have here a striking image of salvation. The one who saves is not a mighty warrior who comes in military array, but rather a lowly shepherd.
