That final sequence at the cemetery-- "Il Triello"-- is one of the things that absolutely made me fall in love with movies as a kid. Top 10 Movie ever for me.
One of the biggest things that separated Spaghetti Westerns from classical Westerns is their fluid idea of morality. "The Good" isn't good because he does serious good things or has good values, he just doesn't have malice, and is willing to be mildly inconvenienced to avoid being a villain. Likewise "The Bad", although his actions aren't much different from The Good (both execute without mercy for money), is bad because his personality is sharp, malevolent, and totally selfish whereas The Good is cavalier, unbothered, and capable of grudging decency. The Ugly, meanwhile, is called that because he's vulnerable, unlike The Good and The Bad. Tuco takes everything personally, and is the most human of the three.
"You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig." The best western of all time, hands down. That bridge scene sometimes gives me nightmares. I dream that men are still fighting over the bridge, completely unaware or despite that the Civil War has long been over. I understand it is weird for someone like me to fixate on, but the Civil War is a hobby interest of mine and such a meaningless battle is horrifying to me. Fun Fact: Clint Eastwood wore the same poncho through all three "Man With No Name" movies without replacement or cleaning. Skeleton Key Fact: The skeleton found by Tuco (Eli Wallach) inside the wrong coffin at Sad Hill cemetery was a real human skeleton. A deceased Spanish actress wrote in her will she wanted to act even after her death. Prequel Fact: This is a "prequel" to A Fistful Of Dollars (1964) and For A Few Dollars More (1967), as it is set during the American Civil War while the other two movies are set afterward. Towards the end of this movie, Blondie (Clint Eastwood) acquires his trademark poncho. It works when you take all three movies as a whole. Historical Fact: Though no specific year or date is stated in this movie, at least part of it takes place during the New Mexico Campaign of 1862. This is confirmed when the hotelkeeper and Tuco mention the retreating Confederate General Sibley (real-life Henry H. Sibley) and the advancing Union Colonel Canby (another historical person, Colonel Edward Canby). This is consistent with the campaign that took place between February and April 1862 in the Union territory of New Mexico and the Confederate state of Texas.
In my opinion, this is the best western ever made. Also the music sound track is also the best of any film. Just a comment on Tuco. The scene with his brother is such an important scene. We learn so much more about Tuco and how poverty played a part in his life. We know nothing about Blondie or Angel eyes. For me Tuco is the most human character in the film.
This is called a "Spaghetti " Western because at that time in the 60's Hollywood didn't want to pay to make big budget westerns so these films are made in Italy and Spain using there actors in the smaller roles. So they act in Italian /Spanish then dub it into english✌🏾
At the ending, Blondie did that to by himself sometime, because he knows Tuco is going to think about going after him. But Blondie did all of that to make sure Tuco get it thru his head that Blondie could have killed him very easily.
Never heard that theory, but it makes total sense. Blondie would have rode off on Angel Eye's horse, so Tucco would have had to re-package his gold and find the horse he was riding when Blondie knocked him off with the cannon (assuming the horse was rideable).
Nice to see you react to this one. My grandfather absolutely loved this film and gave me the trilogy on DVD as a child, instantly sparking my obsession with westerns, Ennio Morricone and Clint Eastwood lol. Don't know how many others will agree with this, but I think Sergio Leone went on to direct 2 films that were even better than this one; Once Upon a Time in the West (his follow-up to this) and Once Upon a Time in America (a 4 hour gangster epic with De Niro). All 3 are top 20 material imo.
You were pretty harsh on Tuco. He manages to remain positive and in good spirits despite all that’s going on. All of our main 3 aren’t angles and have questionable morals. Also Tuco only went after Blondie, after he screwed him n left him in the desert. Of course he’s gonna try n get him back. He also brings a lot of humour to the film with his comical utterings. Like Blondie and Angel Eyes he’s a real badass but he’s just not cold n detached like the others, he’s more earthy and human. You should try Sergio Leone’s next western, “Once Upon a Time in the West” It’s even more epic than this.
Sergio Leone based his 3rd western on the Unions New Mexico campaign of `62 and in the west of that era, if a man could have superior control with his iron, he could live a longer life, have power with justice & even in military ranks as Angel Eyes proved. Film location in Spain took our American actors some time to get adjusted, but most others were Italian.. as a union man Tuco stole my heart with his line " if you work for a living, why do you kill yourself working".. and then Sergio`s debate between whether if it is easier to accept the challenges of criminal life or those that come with the weight of a faithful life & drive to deal with humanities ills and this being in a war zone was one that many in our gang (your age) went back and forth with at the time we saw it.. I was out there in the west so this was natural for me but as you`ve read in the comments of this Il Classico many were urban cowboys.. poor Angel Eyes, he got no love but you might check out the other previous two Leone movies that proceed this one, giddyup Marie
Great reaction, thanks. This is one of the so called 'Spaghetti Westerns' Clint made in Italy. A Fistful of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly. all 3 were directed by Sergio Leone.
At 14:36 I never notice before but that chicken Tuco was talking to was a real chicken that was alive. You'll notice in the close-up that the chicken's eyes were closed but then you see them open when he's wiggling it's head talking to it. They must have drugged it so it would be limp for the scene
Few advices from an old generation: -"once upon a time in the west", by Sergio Leone, best western , one the 3 best movies ever. Cinematography, music, story building, acting (incredible caracters), even editing. A master piece. -"the wild bunch", best american western, by Sam Peckinpah, ultra violent, very modern, very stylich, the ,best shootout in cinema (with "heat") with a heavy machine gun. The first modern movie.Peckinpah is a genius, all his movies are incredible, very deep in fact, very politic too.. -all the dirty harry movie, with,Clint Eastwood at his best. - all the Stanley kubrick movies. He is simply the best director of all the time. -a funny, but very nostalgic western :"my name is nobody" . And maybe a little bit deeper than people think, with a moral
Great job with this reaction Journey! Kids from the 60s and 70s loved mimicking the score of this movie with a whistle. Have you considered reacting to the greatest old movie of all time, 1933 King Kong?
@@journeymariereacts If you have 2 minutes for a laugh, search YT for "Eddie Murphy Delirious Mom shoe" if you hadn't seen his Clint Eastwood "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly" joke. King Kong 1933 is Free here on YT also.
His intro scene where he's just staring him down across the table, Van Cleef looks like the result of what would happen if the baddest person on the planet fucked a hawk.
The motion that Tuco was doing is the sign of the cross. BTW, you seem to get prettier every reaction I see of yours, just saying. Also there's several other Clint Eastwood westerns you should react to: "Fistful of Dollars", "For a Few Dollars More", "Pale Rider" and "The Outlaw Josie Wales". There's more but these are a great start.
Great reaction as always Journey Marie. I love Clint Eastwood westerns and I love living in the Western US after being raised in “the south”. Stay warm Journey, you’re looking pretty as always! ❤
Glad you enjoyed! This is a masterpiece on so many levels which is why it holds up today almost 60 years later! IMO the greatest musical score ever. Respect to the late great Ennio Morricone 🙌🏻
U honestly ain't ever lived life until u eat ground beef veggie soup 🍲 out of a wooden bowl wit a wooden ladel spoon ❤ It will humble u when u doin too much or workin too hard & it taste fire 🔥 asf ❤ The scenes in Western films that show them eating are always goated 🐐 & taste just as good how they look in real life especially when u hungry asf💯
Blondie knew he couldn't trust Tuco because he'd shoot him in the back first chance he got so he had to devise a plan to distance himself from Tuco to ensure he'd be safe and still leave with half the money.
Dang you are so smart. You got every plot point in an instant. Always enjoy your reactions. A Fistful of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More complete the 'Dollars Trilogy' . Though, they are 3 separate movies. Hope you watcj them seen ❤
My father and brother are really into this movie me not so much lil to old school for my taste but I hope you enjoy and get something positive out of it
Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach, and Lee Van Cleef are speaking English, the rest of the cast is speaking Italian & Spanish, and then all voices were re-dubbed into English, with Eastwood, Wallach & Van Cleef dubbing their own voices. Many will suggest the "Dollars" movies - But you should watch (and I know you will enjoy), "The Outlaw Josey Wales" produced and directed by Eastwood.
A lot of young boys - yes. Lots of very young boys were in the armies on both sides. And both sides used drummer boys, too. The mouths not matching the words - these movies were filmed in Italy and Spain. The actors spoke their own languages and then the English was dubbed. Tuco's gesture with his hand when someone dies is a very sloppy sign of the cross. He's either blessing them after he's killed them or he's asking forgiveness. Either way it's borderline blasphemous.
Marie, since you're going full CLINT, you should check out ( imo, his very best, acting and directing Movie) " MILLION DOLLAR BABY". Fheiceann tu imoibriu eile, Mo Stor.
Great reaction sis! You noticed the way the characters moved their lips when they talked and it was off. That was because the actors dubbed their dialogue after the movie was done filming. The three main leads were all American and dubbed their own voices. This was because in Italy and other European countries a lot of people from different parts of the continent work on the movies speak their native language on screen and have to have someone that speaks English dub their voices for the English audience in America. Also why did you smile at 4:51 when the Halle Berry looking mom fell to the floor? She just lost her man and son😂 Idk your expression tickled the mess outta me lol.
I remember reading about Eli Wallach, the actor that played Tuco. That he almost died three different times making the film. 1. When they shot the scene where he is hanging and Blondie shoots the rope. The rope didn’t break and Eli was hanging by the neck for almost 30 seconds. 2. In the part of the movie where Tuco is laying down by the train tracks waiting for the train to come and break the handcuffs. The train is coming and Eil Wallach has his head down to the ground, the director forgot that the step platform for the train was lower than he calculated and if Eli didn’t have his head as low as he did l, he would’ve been decapitated. 3. During one of the breaks from filming everybody went to lunch. Eli Wallach went to the crews section to say hello. He saw these glass bottles on the table thinking their were drinks for everybody. He was about to drink it when one of the crew members slap it out of his hand and yelled at him in Italian. When the bottle hit the ground he say the liquid melting the ground. He was about to drink acid that was used as a substance that helped with the effects on set. *also he almost got his head taken off when Angel Eyes chunked that shovel by his head. 😂
Happy New Year Marie. It's always wonderful to see and hear from you. You're reactions / post. Support you always your truly wonderful ❤🙂 Was wondering if you've seen the movie Fallen ? It's a 1998 supernatural thriller and it has Denzel Washington and John Goodman in it
