18:20 if you catch actually what hes saying, he doesn’t refer to the horse as an it how people usually refer to animals past tense “what happened to your dog? It died” when he saying you killed her you killed her he’s kind of more referring to Tracee the stripper which Tony kind of had a father daughter relationship, and ralphie killed her because of whatever she “disrespected” him and he’s been holding that grudge ever since
What I love about this episode as we start having feelings of either sympathy or empathy for him. He’s a big piece of shit, Ralph and some of the other characters but yet time and time again we still fall into the shoes of the character and feel what they feel and it’s hard to step out of the shoes and go into more of a viewing form of it because the characters are written, acted and look so damn real hats off to the writers Director and everyone on set of the show!

David Chase didn't tell Ralph's actor whether he killed the horse or not, so he decided to play it as though he was innocent. Also, I believe that Tony told Ralph about the girlfriend during a vulnerable moment in an attempt to get a rise out of him, because he was uncomfortable with the idea that the worst person in his life can change. Because if Ralph can change, Tony might feel the responsibility to become a better person also. So, whether Ralph was responsible for the fire or not, Tony needs to believe that he was for his own sake, morally. And he decided to strike Ralph only after Ralph called him out for his hypocrisy and shaky morals; not caring about Ralph hurting people for money but being devastated over the horse.
Hmm... good insight. What helps verify that view of Tony with Ralph was the exact phrase Ralph said that made Tony explode & kill him. Ralph pointed out Tony’s hypocrisy on animals & the way he eats (and why Tony is fat). That’s a common breaking point for Tony... shoving his hypocrisy in his face. But I do believe it was Tracee that Tony felt he was avenging as he was bashing Ralph’s head in. Tony killed Ralphie the same way Ralphie killed Tracee. That was a deliberate link the writers added. Plus Tracee’s pic on the mirror at the end.
@@gregsgoogle2947 Yea the Tracee connection is probably more relevant in this episode, and the other stuff that I mentioned is perhaps made more obvious in Calling All Cars (throughout the dream sequence and therapy scenes).

That's what so great about The Sopranos. Ralph was a terrible, evil scumbag, but during that hospital scene you felt sorry for him. Great acting and brilliant writing
The only question left is who burned down the barn, was it Ralph for insurance and revenge on Tony for Valentina, or Paulie was mad at Ralph for the Joke and Tony defending him. As much as i think Ralph would be the kinda person who would do it, I feel its more fun to think that the worst person on the show was killed over the one thing he was completly innocent of😂
Ralph liked the Gladiator movie And he went out like a gladiator ... fighting Also the moment Tony burns his hand on the stove after the fight ... that was real and they kept it in for realism
Ralph is literally the Devil. The entire episode was built around The Rolling Stones song “Sympathy for the Devil”. They even used lyrics from the song in the script. Ralph said “please allow me to introduce myself” when he introduced himself to the doctor. Father Phil asked Ralph “we’re you there when Jesus Christ had his moment of doubt & pain?”. He was symbolically asking Ralph if he’s the Devil. The episode is constantly trying to get you to have sympathy for the devil (Ralph). We know of all the horrible things Ralphie has done yet he can still get sympathy from us. Is the Devil really this powerful or is it a flaw or weakness in us that we can be made to feel sympathy for a monster we know everything about.
Also him saying he'd repent to the priest and the shot of the goat outside the burnt stable when Tony gets there (goats being the symbol of the devil/baphomet/evil and the sheep/lamb being that of light/peace and Jesus in the Bible)
@@bigol9223 Actually not word for word. One vital difference. The song line is “I was there when Jesus Christ had his moment...”. In the script the song line is changed to a question. Father Phil is asking Ralph “Where you there when Jesus Christ had his moment...?” In effect the father is asking Ralph if he’s the Devil. When I saw this the 1st time I totally missed it. I thought Father Phil was quoting the Bible the way he said it. Nope he was quoting The Rolling Stones!😆
"Ralph reminded Tony of all the qualities he had and hated about himself"- David Chase the creator of The Sopranos Ralphie may have been improving as a person and we feel compassion for him. It was always clear that Tony had to feel he was better Ralph. The last thing he does is point out his hypocrisy due to his eating meat. Ralph was was also responsible for the girl at the clubs death and Tony just learned he was responsible for his mistresses suicide both used and discarded their "whores"
This episode just gets deeper the more you think about it Ralph about Tracey: "So what! she was a FUCKING WHORE!" Ralph about Horse: "So what! It was a FUCKING WHORse!" Tony: "FUCKING BEAUTIFUL INNOCENT CREATURE!!! FUCK IT EVER DO TO HURT YOU!!!" "YOU KILLED HER!!! YOU FUCKING KILLED HER!!!" Coincidence???👀👀
Ralph always made the most money of Tony's entire crew, but he wasn't exactly blessed with emotional intelligence, so he didn't understand how Tony thought and how important animals were to him. He could kill a woman a few episodes ago, it was annoying, but Big T let him get away with it, but killing an animal and talking badly about it afterwards is pure suicide, the boss instantly becomes a berserker and executioner, that was actually predictable.
“She was a beautiful innocent creature! What did she ever do to you? You fucking killed her!” In the last episode, you made the brilliant observation that when Tony said “I already took his horse” to Valentina that it sounded like “whore”. This was VERY intentional, the word horse is in fact used to represent women on several occasions. When Tony attacks Ralph, he is using Pie Oh My’s death as an excuse to kill him over Tracee’s death (the stripper who was pregnant with Ralph’s kid), which he has still not gotten over. It’s very subtle and I only got after a few watch-throughs!
