As good as cinema gets, the fact that Leone managed to surpass this perfect movie with Once Upon a Time in the West is a testament to his skill as, not just a filmmaker, but as an artist

@@albertchin1050 Goodfellas is way better than both of those, it's debateable if they're even good movies, Taxi Driver especially is among the most overrated films in the history of cinema but it's OK.
He was also good as the bandits' chief in "The Magnificent Seven ". In fact, I think it was seeing him in that role that inspired director Sergio Leone to cast him in "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly ". Personally, my favorite character and actor in a Western is Jason Robards as "Cheyenne " in "Once Upon A Time In the West", also directed by Sergio Leone.
I adore this movie and it lives in my heart every moment. I love it very much. I watched it dozens of times and I never would have hoped for it. I made my children love it too.
I watch this movie once in the summer and once in the winter. My fave Western of all time. And tied for my favourite movie of all time with Star Wars Ep IV.
Harry Lime said it. This is the best western in the world. Today, with rmtiday's sensibilities, I am sure it would have been nominated for, and would have won several Oscars, starting with best picture and best soundtrack. Imagine, an Italian director who could not speak English, grabbed the world by the collar and replicated American history to the minutest detail. Mr Leone traversed the set with Civil War history books under his arms. His research for details were/ are excellent and accurate.
Now a "visual masterpiece". There is no end to the credits this film gets. BTW, how come its only in the last few years that this film is being so recognised!!
Many continue to claim that Blondie, “the Good”, is not good at all, but this is false. The truth is he is good. He vastly more moral and compassionate that the other two of the trio.
Clint Eastwood was 36 years then and is now 91 years old with both Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef sadly both have passed away unfortunately over the years.
