Awesome review! You included in depth details. Very very impressed! One of these days I expect for you to take it completely apart and put it back together for us. Excellent Review Brian . You touched all the pros & cons of this device . I’m very disappointed that I cannot setup this device on the Nest app & maintain it with Nest . It forces you to migrate your Nest account to google account .

Seriously awesome review Bri, you've gone in to greater depth than anyone else but kept it entertaining 👍 On balance I'm still not gunna buy one unless they get closer to the cost of the Lenovo Smart Display current pricing though, even though I realise this has got more smarts built in but they're not functions that I'd really use all that often

For me the fact that they migrate the Nest account to the Google one is a plus. I'm happy to not need to open a Nest account. So much easier. We finally can get the Max in France and I should receive it in November. I found funny that you said that the device will work with an android device too.

I got the Google Nest Hub Max on Black Friday for $199. Wasnt sure if I was going to keep it since I already owned the Lenevo 10". Audio quality would be the determing factor. Well, Google Nest Hub Max speakers blew Lenevo's speakers out of the water! Now my Lenevo is sitting on a shelf unplugged and unused. I have so many other great speakers in all my other rooms, the Lenevo has no place to go... for now. ☹ I do prefer the Lenevo design, though. Too bad they didnt put speakers on both sides of the screen.

Any yet a 3rd question. The 7" was referred to as a "hub", but does not have much of the functionality of the phone app so can't really be considered a hub. So wondering if the 10" is simply the 7" but with a camera ?

Another question is colour quality. Have the 7" Google Hub and colours are not accurate; a red mustang looks orange. Also have the 10" Lenova; colors there are accurate.

Great Video! Couple things... You did a video on Z-Wave and zigbee protocols a while back that was really informational, you should update the video including thread protocol and how it compares. Is there an ability to create a dark mode on the display?

Hey yeah I will! Probably early 2020 though :) No dark mode, but heavy ambient EQ makes me feel like it’s not really necessary

If I can't Chromecast Netflix makes me wonder what this will except to Chromecast, I want to watch local sport casts while cooking etc, was really hoping this was going to take most things you through at it. Guess I wait awhile to see how it evolves from here.

Can you elaborate on the limitations of this product due being on an existing thread network vs creating a new network? I'm moving soon and I'm heavily invested in Google's ecosystem, but I haven't gotten into Smart Home tech yet. This product looks great, and I"m also looking at C by GE bulbs because they integrated directly with Google Home. I'm also looking at the Nest Guard and Yale X Nest lock, but I was considering buy those later. Do you recommend buying the Nest Guard (or Nest Connect) at the same time as buying this Smart Display?

Hi Brien - Right now, the Thread networks have essentially been put on pause by a new and upcoming protocol that Google is working on with Samsung, the ZigBee Alliance, Apple, and Amazon (as well as many other companies). The point of it is to put Thread in that protocol and make sure that all of them can work together. So the products right now like the Nest Guard...it's a little up in the air. I know Google has been working on lots of Thread products, but do they come out with them? I think so...but I'm not sure when or how soon. I think it's soon, but no one will confirm for me. So no, I don't really recommend buying the Nest Guard at the same time. The device works totally fine on WiFi and that's what it does most things with. It's really just a Thread repeater as it stands today.

Those Google people are tricky. In the middle of the night I tried to raise the temperature in my home on the Nest Thermostat and it didn't work. I opened my iPhone and I had all these messages that I couldn't read except the continue at the bottom. I was sleepy and wanted it warmer and just kept hitting those continue buttons and my heat came on. It turns out the next day I was migrated and my Amazon Echo stuff was useless and it only worked on my lights. I had to swap over to Google Home to get it all to work again.

Sidebar: Do you have an idea what bluetooth speakers work best with Google Home or does it matter? I am growing to like Google's way of playing music over the way Amazon does it. My house is too small for the Max and I was looking at Bose Soundlink to pair with my Nest Hub. Great review by the way. Always enjoy your videos and your great insights.

Hey Tony, I think if I was out spending that much on a Bluetooth speaker, I’d probably look at something like the Sonos Move. You get access to other services and features and some extra integration. Otherwise, I don’t think you want to go cheap and get a Bluetooth 4.0 device...but that’s just me!

On the base Google Home? I think it depends on when you bought it, but it should run from 4.0 to 4.2. They're not saying any longer though. Either way, backwards compatibility from a BT 5.0 device will help!

How does the camera work, lets say that you have a unauthorized / unrecognized person in your house, and they come into the room, does it automatically start recording them? Also does it send you a notification on your phone that the camera recorded them in your house?

It does all of that with a nest aware subscription, yes.

Hi Brian, This reminds me of when the Google Home first came out. It worked fine, but really didn't do a lot compared to now. I bought early on the Hub Max too, and it will take awhile for the bells and whistles to be added. Right now there isn't a whole lot of value add, compared to the other screens. So like someone else already mentioned, make this one a Black Friday buy. I'm happy with the form factor, compared to the 10 inch Lenovo. This fits well on my desk and is only a little taller than the Lenovo. I now sit here and play peek-a-boo with the Hub Max. :)

Had I known that I can make phone calls through it I would have already purchased it... Is there a battery built-in so if I move it from one location to another I don't have to shut it down and start it up again???

No sadly, there is not a battery built-in. It's easy to move between locations if you maintain the wifi credentials between the two locations. If you're looking for a budget option, maybe you just get the smaller Nest Hub!?

Does the GNHM display security cameras that are not Nest products? That is something the reviewers never talk about, including yourself. I have some Wyze cams that I would like to see displayed on something besides my cell phone. Is it possible to display their images on the GNHM? Thanks.

nice balanced review. I equally love and hate my nest hub maxs. I bought two here in Australia and found out one of the main reasons isn't actually supported. I wanted my son to be able to use them for Duo to call other family members but since he is six, he has an android account with family link, and some genius at google decided family link members cant link their duo account to the hub max and he can't use my account either as it knows its him asking. Yes I could change his date of birth and make him old enough but then i lose parental controls. my only other issue is I bought two, setup one absolutely no problems, the second one though fails to setup after picking the wifi network, i'm waiting for google to get back to me before I take it back to the store for a refund as im sure its either faulty or a glitch in the matrix that google will take years to fix.

Hi Darryl, I haven’t found a date but you could get it on eBay for about $320 CAD. They did get the ULc approval, so I actually don’t know why it’s not out yet here In Canada! I’m betting before the end of the year.

What happens if two people put their faces in front of the Nest Hub Max at the same time? Or does it just recognise the closest face? Does it warn you that someone is looking over your shoulder?

We brought one for Christmas Love the sound- it’s incredible but that’s about all The clock faces are really limited and you can t add the date, temperature etc You can’t play streaming tv services like Netflix or Freeview We wanted to use it outside to watch tv. At the moment we use our very old iPad paired to a Bluetooth speaker. Thought this would replace it but looks like a trip to Apple ( I admit love Apple stuff just wish they were in the home assistant space )to get a new iPad The girl in the shop said it was a tablet as well but it’s so limited in what it can do Well keep it just for the speaker but it’s pretty useless other than that Shame, could have been a killer product. Apple should do a tablet, assistant with built in great sounding speaker

I am facing issue with the spacing of volume on my Nest Hub Max. From 10 to 70% I hear next to nothing and from 80 to 100% it gets too loud. Is it only me or others face this issue as well?

Hi Clive, if you're struggling with this then you may have turned Camera Sensing off in the Recognition and Personalization section of the devices settings.

Good Job Brain, Keep going ......Small inquiry please, actually I have an issue with my Nest hub max and I need your help, my nest account was in UAE and I have a free subscription until June 2020 and now I moved to Turkey and all of my google account services now are related to my new location, Shall I migrate my nest account to google account, btw there is no Nest subscription in Turkey :( What Do you think ??

Does the nest hub Max have the same ability as the Pixel 4 to do on board commands? And if not, can a software update change that?

That remains to be seen actually! I believe lots of local control and lots of onboard processing is possible but I have yet to see it
