The Gothic tribes who did so much to cause the Roman Empire to crumble away in the West first moved to the East. Why and how did they end up in Spain then? And what is their story? In this video we look at their prehistoric origins, their emergence on the borders of the Empire, their incorporation into the Empire and their wars and civil wars, and journey across Italy and into Spain.

Im quite impressed by your research and the information. I have 2 questions: do you have any reference to the Gothic migration and contacts with the Scythians. And when will you follow up this video with the Ostrogoths. A third question: what happened to Fritigern?

@@mihaiilie8808They should be glad we don't make videos exposing all the history and identity theft. Starting with Greece and Germany.. That would be a huge meme! About the huns. Nothing to be upset about here. They were Thracians too. Former massagetae or Moesi/Getae, also Royal Scythians. Attila was from the Bulgarian Dulo clan. Later Asparuh was from the same lineage. All were Thracians but were attempted to be made turks. So the people who destroyed the Roman empire were the people who were oppressed.

Germanics on the other hand I don't think they are thieves like the Greeks. And if you look in Toulouse France, until recently, people there had elongated heads and was called Toulouse deformity. Those are the visigoths with hunnic ideas.

Well....in your material Ben, you present several maps and at 7:44 you have one where it shows where the Goths were located. But that land used to belong to the Getae. Cesar wrote that western borders of the Getae were from the mountain side of Hercynian forest to the west as far as Tyragetae. Strabo and Ptolemy say that too and according to Tacitus, Dacia was bordering Germania. Ptolemy also said that Dacians were also on upper Vistula up to Baltic sea. During the Roman empire, under the name of Sarmats were known all the Scythian peoples which were a Thracian as well and all were speaking the same language as the Getae according to Stephanus Byzantinus. Jan Dlugosz writes that when the first Slavs came in those territories they encountered an older population there that was speaking a Romanic language but different than Latin. About the same language but spoken also in northern Germania we know from Suetonius and Cassius Dio so Jordanes might be right after all when he writes that the Goths were the same peoples as the Getae. Even the names of the Goth kings: Roderic, Alaric, Theodoric, were old names which derive from the land which now is Romania...Roderică, Alarică, Tudorică. Those names got germanized because they could not pronounce letter ,,ă'' so it was easier to leave it out. Even Isidore of Seville writes that people of the Goths is a very ancient one and is deriving directly from ancient Getae and Scythian people that despise death and praise the wounds.
@BenLlywelyn
@BenLlywelyn 5 месяцев назад
Except. We know the Goths migrated over a long time period before being where the Getae were - which means we also have archaeology showing these were not the same people.
@adriansparlac8517
@adriansparlac8517 5 месяцев назад
Agree, there are indeed but you see some scholars say the Goths come from Scandinavia. Their number was not so big compared to the ones from the regions I mentioned in my previous comment so is less likely to sack the Roman empire and conquer Europe. Even today Scandinavians are not numerous at all after all these centuries. Goths are also called in Scandinavia, Geats. If the Getae went up to Baltic regions and we know the sea sometimes freeze during the winter, what would stop them to set up a colony there as well? Carolus Lundius is writing about that. Also if you look at the name of the Gothic kings you will see most of them and most famous ones having Carpatho - Danubian origin and some of them Germanic which proves they worked together. So the origin of the Goths (also Geats) as descendants of the Getae is more plausible. Overall your material is good.@@BenLlywelyn

@@adriansparlac8517and after all Jordanes wrote a short version of the original history of Goths: De Getica after Cassiodorus! So both of them were confused? Less likely! Also he most likely used the same title: De Getica…. If he wrote the short version why he will change the title… If will find one day the Cassiodorus version will have clarification! And…if the Thracians were the most numerous by Herodotus, makes more sense! Like Thracian tribe Dardanoi were called Trojans, many tribes of Thracians called different in different geographical regions, all still being Thracians, like Getae and Goths.

The sense I got while studying the Gothic and Dacian related history is that they did mix in parallel with the Roman occupation in the unconquered Dacian territories. Nicolò Zeno's work (On the Origin of the Barbarians - Venice 1557 AD) has a few quotes of Gothic kings which seem to identify Diurpaneus (Decebal's father) as one of their own also; if authentic the phenomenon of Goths identifying with Getae wouldn't be unique to Jordanes. And let's not forget that emperor Caracalla enacted memoria damnatio against the use the Getic derivatives (Geta; Getic; Gets; etc.) which was to be punished by death, it's probably a safe bet to conclude that all the Getae of the Empire began identifying as Goths after that point so rather than the Goths identifying with the Getae in this case it's more probable that the Getae identified as Goths. And I don't remember by which ancient historian it was given but there's a quote about the Goths being the most famous among the barbarians which led to the Romans calling the majority of them as such regardless of their actual affiliation. Then there's also that thing which I mentioned on a previous video about the Romanian Calus dance and the English Morris dance being very similar down to the traditional clothing; which the Dacians might've brought to England while the Goths are credited with bringing it to Spain.
@mihaiilie8808

Do you expect that he heard of Nicolo Zeno or Carlo Troya? They are Italian historians wich say clearly the visigoths that sacked Rome are dacians. Iordanes says the goths from Gotland are the getae from Dacia. And the morons got it that Gotland goths are the ancestors of the much more ancient getae. Just look at the visigoth plate from Buzau and you will see they cultivated vineyards. Germanics and especially the ones from Sweden didn't had vineyard. Alaric was buried under a river wich is the most dacian thing to do, like Decebal buried his treasure under a river. The visigoths are the getae dacians as Iordanes says multiple times and with copious amount of explanations.

@@mihaiilie8808 Ben did in fact cover a lot of the info presented by Nicolo Zeno regardless of just how he gathered that information. And as if the Thracians weren't enough there's also the theory according to which the Dacians and the Getae have parallels in the Dahae and the Masagetae so he's not wrong in the slightest to say that they were different people both ways, imo the conversation should be about a potential admixture rather which i think is very likely. So personally I don't agree with neither the statement that they were the one and the same neither with the statement that they were different and that's all there ever was to the story.

@@akuleet6029 I'm not racist but these germanics steal our geto dacian history because they have none. Germanics were ducated by the dacian visigoths and converted to arianism, and now they claim the getae dacians were a germanic coulture. This is something that Hitler would do and he did in fact digged the river in Italy to search Alaric tomb. Just Immagine Alaric was buried under a river like Decebal buried his treasure. That's the most dacian thing to do. No germanic tribe has this under river burial.

The Visigoths crossed the Danube and entered the Roman Empire as refugees, running away from Attila and the Huns. Along with them came a large number of other tribes, both Germanic and non-Germanic (like the Alans). The Romans granted them asylum, but had them living in very precarious conditions. So the Visigoths, in sheer desperation, marched against Rome and raided the city. As ransom, the Romans offered them the lands south of Bordeaux.Then Attila reached the French Landes and the Romans gathered a huge coalition to face them, including the Visigoths and dozens of other tribes. They were victorious. As a reward, the Visigoths were offered what today is the southern half of France. But the Visigoths were pushed south of the Pyrenees by the Franks. There they met the Suebi, who had established the first kingdom of Europe (also the first Christian kingdom, not counting Armenia). The Suebi had expelled the Vandals and the Alans to Africa and fought the Visigoths for a couple of century to be eventually defeated. But the Suebi were Catholics and the Visigoths Arianists. So the Pope sent the Francs against the Visigoths again, who were defeated one more time. This defeat triggered a huge crisis amongst the Visigoths and ultimately lead to civil war. The losing faction called the Vandals from the Kingdom of Tunisia to their aid. But the Vandals had been absorbed by the Arab Empire and so half of the Visigoths and their allies converted to Islam in order to deserve the help. This was the end of the Visigothic Kingdom as such and the beginning of the Arab rule in (most of) Iberia. But the Suebi along with some Visigoths resisted in the north.

Coming out of the east, they struggled across the great mountains, and began to fight against the neighboring Vlakhs and Slavs. For the Slavs had settled there first, but the Vlakhs had seized the territory of the Slavs. The Magyars subsequently expelled the Vlakhs, took their land, and settled among the Slavs, whom they reduced to submission. 29 From that time this territory was called Hungarian".

@@BenLlywelyn Here's a sample of what the Hungarian education system teaches. "A Byzantine author, Kekaumenos writes about the Vlachs in Greece in connection about their origin and way of life in the Strategikon in 1075-1078.[69] According to Kekaumenos, the Vlachs were Dacians and Bessus, who lived near and south from the Danube and the Sava, where the Serbs live now. They feigned loyalty to the Romans while they were constantly attacked and pillaged, therefore, Trajan launched a war, their leader, Decebalus was also killed, and then the Vlachs were scattered in Macedonia, Epirus and Hellas.[70][71] Kekaumenos made the Dacians the ancestors of the Vlachs because he knew about the deceitfulness of the Dacians against the Romans, and according to him the Dacians and Vlachs had a perfectly matching nature, treachery and political unreliability, so much that in his opinion they should not be believed even if the Vlachs take an oath.[70][71] Kekaumenos arbitrarily identified the Vlachs with the Dacians according to the archaizing efforts of his time, because the tendency to refer to later peoples with classical names was common in Byzantium at the time of Kekaumenos.[70][69][71] Kekaumenos also confused the Roman province Dacia Traiana with Dacia Aureliana, and even he placed it further west where it actually was, that is why he mentioned the Serbian territory as the homeland,[69][71] the Bessus tribe was a neighbor of the Roman province Macedonia.[69]" - Vlachs wiki page These are all Hungarian sources. Kakaumenos never mentions Dacia Aureliana; the Diocese of Dacia in Illyricum fits the description on the other hand. The account is a summary of what took place from Trajan's time up to Kekaumenos' time and not the nonsense that the Hungarian "academia" preaches but there it is, sitting on wikipedia just because it got some Hungarian citations, the most biased source there could possibly be as far the subject is concerned. And examples abound i.e. "Trajan annihilated/destroyed the Dacians" when in reality the revolt from the year of the death of emperor Trajan was in essence a 3rd Dacian war.

In Old Swedish it's Westra Gautaland (the [w] phoneme has turned into the [v] phoneme in Swedish except for in a few rural dialects with very few speakers). There is a hypothesis that Catalonia is named after the Goths, since the name in Latin originally might have been Gathia Launia - "Gaut(h)a Land". There is one region and there are three historical provinces and three modern counties with Göt/Got in them in Sweden: Götaland, Västergötland, Östergötland and Gotland and Västra Götaland county, Östergötland county and Gotland county. Also note that the Danish peninsula attached to continental Europe is called Jutland. In "Götaland" etc (but not in "Gotland" or in the old "Gautaland") the g is soft, sounding like a j. 3:20 Scania or Scanialand - also including Halland, Blekinge and Bornholm (the latter only Swedish 1658-60) - is actually south of the green on your map. Visigoth word is 100% dacian, because if you knew romanian, its not visi goth but vizi goth, with the letter Z. Letter Z is from the dacians. ,, Vizitiu,, word in romanian language, means the driver of the carriage or,, conducator,, ( leader and would translate as the leader of the carriage). In romanian we call the driving license,, permis de conducere,, wich is license to lead. The president of Romania says he is the,, conducator,, ( could be vizitiu) of Romania. So vizigoth means the ruling goths, the,, conducator,, goths. That doesnt mean the dacians were germanic. Vizigoths just spread christianity to the the germanics that were in the stone age as you can see it portrayed on the Trojan column. The germans are naked and the lowest slaves the romans had. Syrians are the best dressed and the most educated on the Trojans column, wich makes sence as the great architect Apolodor of Damascus, was sirian. Trojans column says it all. And Athanaric kings name means Intuneric in romanian language wich is translated to,, darkness,,. He was darker skinned probably than the germanics.
