There is also the old Welsh word for Wales - Gwalia, which appears to be a hybridised form combining both the Germanic ‘walh’ names and the Romanised ‘gall’ names. Cognate with the French name ‘Pays de Galles’ and the name ‘Gaul’.
@BenLlywelyn
@BenLlywelyn 7 часов назад
Gwalia is what happened when Welsh speakers took from Medieval Latin Wallia, from wallus, from Saxon wealh (“Welsh person”), and added the typical Welsh 'Gw' sound at the beginning.

Very good. Only one uncertainty: I am not sure about your explanation of Egypt. You are correct that the Welsh word for Egypt is ‘Yr Aifft’. However, the Welsh word for ‘went’ is ‘aeth’, not “aiff”. (The Welsh word for ‘to go’ is ‘mynd’.) As far as I’m aware, the Welsh word for Egypt, ‘Yr Aifft’, derives from the middle Welsh name ‘Eifft’, which in turn derived from the Brythonic ‘égift’, and subsequently to the Latin word ‘Aegyptus’ and Greek ‘Aiguptos’. In that context, “aiff” sounds like a cockney saying “aeth”! 😁

For quite some time ( 850 - 1350 roughly speaking) Moldova has been a Bulgarian province as a part of Wallachia. Most of the time the border was the Dniester river, although there were times when territories were seceded to the Prut river. When the Second Bulgarian Empire collapsed by the Ottoman onslaught in 1396, Wallachia and Moldova became principalities, who bent the knee to the Ottomans.

If we go back... They are Thracians(as were the Illyrians), Dacians being one of the Thracian tribes as were many in Europe. The Dacian tribe united the Thracian tribes across the land that formed Dacia. Tribes that were mostly Thracian, but, there were Germanic and Celtic tribes as well. Therefore, the common things you see between the Dacians and Celts, like the Draco. If you look back at the similarities. The latinisation of Dacia doesn't make any sense.... Would go deeper into this shit but whatever. One thing tho, is those that were there before the arrival of the Dacians. So, I assume those people did become part of Dacia(cucuteni-trypillian civilization).

@mr ben llywelin....the story of vlachs is sad because even today the last remnants of noble vlach origin:the romanians are atacked culturally by russians who created 2 states:romania and moldova teaching the local population that they are not romanians and sending the oppositon to die in siberia gulags between 1945-1980 replacing the natives with russians.also romania is culturally attacked by hungary who wants transylvania to become hungarian and support the idea that romanians are not the latinezed dacians but they came from the south migrating with sheeps.also is the culturally mistake that the roma people(gypsies) are romanians which is deeply wrong...even todau when i spoke to you on the first comment i received messages from a serbian nationalist who denies the right of vlacga and romanians gtom timocka krajina to exist..if thing will go like this the last vlachian/walachian language will become extinct like welsh.so yes again the vlach history including romanians is a sad history for survival...romanians and vlachs never attacked or occupied any nation but we were attacked and occupied by others..we are the latinised natives of these lands and slavs and hungarians come here from somewhere else occuping pillaging, doing cultural and real genocide against vlachs during centuries.slavs and magyars were and maybe are war mongers nations with strong nationalism and thei squabbles and little empires and stupid little wars were created on vlach/walachian bones.visit moscopole(voskopoje), cernauti( cernevsti) ianina(ioanina), metsovo,blavda(blagoevgrad), the dalmstian parts of croatia or west bosnia,south of hungary or istria peninsula and you will see the ruins of noble people of vlacjian/walachian ....our cultural legacy and languages are dying under bulgarian serbian greek albanian croatian hugarian or russian ukrainian nationalism/imperialism...so yes vlachs/walachians are a sad story or eastern roman empire.with respect, laurentiu

In the Serbian language vlach also means shepherd. In medieval Serbia The Zakon vlahom, which does not mean the Vlach law, did not apply to soldiers but to shepherds and herdsmen. The Military Law regulated the obligations of soldiers. And all that has nothing to do with the Vlachs and certainly not with the Romanians.

Thank you ever so much, Ben! I even studied History (mainly medieval history), but could never really understand who exactly the Walchen were supposed to be, who left place names around today´s Salzburg in abundance (for example: Wallersee is a lake, Straßwalchen and Seewalchen are settlements, but there are more). In celtic times Salzburg seems to have been a place with baths, physicians (in roman times temples to Hygieia and Aeskulap) and a "Belenus"-cult, a twin to Aquileiea - there are Caverns, which have been completely shut off by two tiers of monastery walls since much more than thousand years, and there should even be a carved footprint somewhere, but that site is long fortgotten and as I said, it is shut off by the Benedictine monastery. Then, Salzburg was somewhat in the middle between the rich Saltmining places of first Hallstatt, later in the La Tene times Dürrnberg in Hallein. So there should be Celts, a lot of Celts, and we keep getting told about the importance and all the riches of the salt miners. AND we learn in primary school, that we used to live in the Celtic kingdom Noricum and that Noric Iron was quite the thing - the Romans wanted it. So there should be a lot of Celts, shouldnt there? But we got told, that "the Walchen", as you said, were what remained of the "Romanics" or "Romanised Celts" (depending on who sais it). So why could they be so few? And why should the Celts call the Celts Walchen? I just couldnt make ist out! But soemtimes a good video helps a lot, and they were "Walchen" in the eyes of the Bavarians , who came in later, some mixture of Celts and their germanic neighbours themselves, and made a point of having control of the place where new kings may have been installed - somewhere I read, that the female familiy of their dukes including the heir of the throne was kept there., which might have come in handy :D . So probably the Walchen were not so few after all, not only a few small settlements. And bishop Severin had organized an exodus of the romanised noric-roman townsfolk to safer italian places, because Rome couldnt protect them any more, which is why the land was said to be "empty" and the Bavarians just came in and took over. Also, the Romans were not interested in the salt mined in Dürrrnberg /Hallein, because they preferred their own sea salt, so there was probably a decline in the number of mining staff and other presonnel needed there as well. Nevertheless, the rural population was still there, and the christian clergy complained, that they were still worshiping in the heathen way after all that time. Thank you, Ben, you fixed it for me. Can understand it at last! :) .
