This Dead/ABB show (search by date) is available to stream on the Internet Archive. Several recordings will show up... search the info in each one. Most will say "there are gaps or missing segments during Dark Star/Spanish Jam and Lovelight. This recording will say they are complete, patched from two different sources. There is software you can download to record streaming music on your computer to capture it. And there are hundreds and hundreds of other great shows!
it used to be quite easy to download whole shows from the internet archive, but as this practice grew in popularity, not everyone was thrilled with the idea . won't mention any names lol thanks greatly for the photo montage behind the music, a beautiful labor of love it certainly is !!!!!
Here I am at 63 hearing great music I never came across and watching recorded live concerts of groups I never got a chance to see live. Not to mention music and performances going back 90 years archived for future generations. Unbelievable!!!
No ego. Just creativity & electricity. Happenings like this are of the past; no more. I’m 24 and I don’t believe we will ever get back to doing it like this.
Saying this as a 23 year old guy born in '95 with eclectic musical influences: this is a treasure. Honestly brings a tear to my eye hearing The Dead, Allman Bros and some of Mac just jamming together. These are some of the finest musicians to ever walk the earth. The thought of Duane, Jerry and Peter playing together is the stuff of dreams, let alone having all the rest of the Dead, Gregg, Oakley... Was dickey there? This is a gem.
Love your comment and totally agree as a 31 year old born in 90' jerry/duane/and peter sharing one stage WOW!!! NOT TOO MENTION ALL THE OTHER INSANE TALENT! BUT gosh damn that is 3 gods gracing the stage at once the people present for this show seen a once in a life time event unfold right in front of their eyes
At almost 70 years of experience, your insight into what was, compared to what we can access today is more than insightful. Gives me hope that "Light and right (turn left here)" can carry us though this BS. Onward through the fog, to Terrapin Station!
You do know there's something vastly more substantial by adding Fleetwood Mac to the title. I don't think people realise how iconic it is. People don't realise the worth of Duane Allman and Peter Green playing together. Disappointing people don't realise what they're sitting on.
My heart really breaks for Peter Green. Always the same 'ol song and dance, he just never gets the recognition that he really deserves. Hey! Don't look (on the stage) but about half of his band, Fleetwood Mac, sat in on this beautiful moment in history. I love them all so very much!
Peter Green "established" Fleetwood Mac long (Hypnotized and Oh Well) before Stevey Nicks showed up. Which I have NO COMPLAMAINT about, Stevey brings it. I still offer "Oh Well" as one of the best FM tunes? Especially as rendered by TP&THB in Gainesville. If Tom Petty covered your song, it meant more than something.
Phil really leads this whole thing...he's just all over the place and driving the bus! We're so lucky to have him playing almost twice weekly now in San Rafael...wish i could get to his b.d. party next week in Cap Theater...have a blast out there for me...whew!
Yesssss! I’m in the right tribe. With the right people. Let it flow. Feel the freedom.✌️64 and ain’t done yet. 2019. How’d I make it this far I’ll never know.
but when you signed on to "live in the moment for the moment bye the moment" you knew that "remember almost none of it" was very possibly part of the contract?
At Slug's jazz club in the far east (between aves. B & C they really did play all night - McCoy Tyner till past 4 am, and leaving Slug's when Sun Ra and the Arkestra were still going strong past 4 am! yes, that was a great time for music, whether Fillmore East or Slugs!
you are so right-the "real " fleetood mac didn't have ovaries,"just" peter greenberg, jeremy spencer aand danny kirwan. "kiln house" one of my favorites of all time! station man! mission bell" "jewel-eyed judy". one of the least appreciated albums ever-but not by me
Duane feels in his soul that he has a special gift that was meant to shine amongst men, above all others. He knows his future. And yet he allows himself to meld with others, sublimatiing himself in deference to the creation of something greater. He doesn't have to play the star.Garcia the same. That is musicianship.
My first Dark Star ever. My best friend, who brought me to my very first Furthur show and helped me get on the bus, put this on while we smoked a bowl and we both just floated off. I think I was in tears near the transition to Spanish Jam. Made me a Deadhead for life. Thanks friend and thank you to all the people that made this amazing night possible. Still never fails to raise goosebumps on my arms every time. Happy 50th to my favorite show ever
Duane starts at 24:53, just a bit before Greg joins in and Peter starts even earlier (somewhere towards the end), recognizable by his Kossoff-like vibrato. ...so not much if a proper jam really but still a historic timepiece of some sorts.
@@bluesriot2 One thing that always bothered me about this recording is that Owsley recorded everybody on the bill but Arthur Lee and Love, because he did not particularly care for their music. I know that Arthur is playing some instrument in this jam and maybe Johnny Echols is too. I love the dead but I also love Love and I wish that I could have heard their set.
I am not a Dead fan, but I have heard some of this show and it was really interesting how Jerry and Bob just laid back after a while and let Duane and Peter melt everyones face. Arguably one of the greatest "guest appearance" lineups of the era.
Joe M Joe, check out PERRO - Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra. It's David Crosby and Jerry Garcia, with members of The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Graham Nash, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and others. Like this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3QrtLof82qM.html
Joe M Garcia and Weir came from a bluegrass background where it is customary for musicians sit back and take turns soloing. It wasn't a stretch for either to sit back and let other musicians shine.
Akin to a musical communion. Like having a house guest. Hospitality is key. Keep the guest engaged, support the experience. Celebrate if they win a round of cards. Get them a drink; et al....make them feel at home. Make a memory. 40+ yrs on. If you are listening to this...mission was accomplished.
@@chrisgreer2692 "do onto others..." pretty much boils all the rules ever written down to 1. However, some people are convinced they need to be edgelords lol.
This is one of the most epic jams that has ever happened. Absolutely epic. I've got a tape of the show. Stellar stuff !!!! Thanks for posting for all to discover.
Thank you so much for posting! My response to Bill Walton's passing has been to listen to particularly outstanding Grateful Dead shows - and this one featuring ABB + Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac as special guests is one of the best. Alas, by the time I saw ABB and Mac, Duane Allman and Barry Oakley had passed away and Peter Green, Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer were long gone. Although both bands were still terrific, all aforementioned stalwarts proved irreplaceable.
ron valic LOL...It’s all over my face & broken down body! 1/4 million miles on a H-D all over this great country took it’s toll! “Live fast, die young, leave a good looking corpse”, I already blew that! BUT...I wouldn’t change a gd thing anyway!
He was the best slide guitarist ever and the best guitarist Al Di Meola, my brother says that jimi could play a little Al but Al could play ALL of Jimi. And Al has to be my most favorite guitarist ever as I am going to listen to him for the rest of the day diffinently the fastest and clearist. My jaw dropped 17 flights back in 78 when I joined the navy you check him out. He is phenominal!! please tell me about it, as I had one person that agreed!!! rkstaton57@gmail.com
Ray Staton Except Di Meola's playing sounds the same. I love his style, one of the fastest players, as well. His fusion work is his best, but he didn't have the imagination, or songwriting ability that Hendrix did.
Awesome share thanks. I never grow tired of this jam people. Like how you added an excerpt from Phil's book. Really enjoyed reading. My favorite part is him writing about the '95 Spring show in Philly PA. That Visions Jerry did is top shelf, watched it several times and moves my soul everytime. When Jerry sings the "howls in the bones of her face" part I get goosebumps ertime....
After a second listen I definitely can hear duane throughout. He does a great job fitting in with the dead. At the very end his tone and style pick up nicely and sounds more like the ABB
This a very true treasure!! Thank you mlbloverock, whoever you are, for sharing one of those moments in the history of Music that will never be again!! Plus your great photos, graphics to go with the music! I have never seen this photo, much less to see the names beside each one on the stage!! Thank you for such a brilliant piece of work!! RMcDinGa
then danny gets in just gets better and better this is the best jammin lineup of guitarist I've seen truely perform, each given his own time then all come together wish I I coulda seen this one, this is gem thanx
Excellent jam. Two of the greatest jam bands ever. The godfathers of improvisation. I also enjoyed the video you put together for this. I`ve been into the Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers for close to 35 years now and many of these photos I never saw before, Great job dude.
Listen closely to he mix, Peter Green's mix is buried. Peter Green scared Bear to death. Peter Green made Jerry pedestrian. This is was all about Green, and Duane Allman. It just confirms that Fleetwood Mac was one of the greatest Blues rock bands of all time.
SisterRayVU68 What a shame Peter was buried in the mix. Kinda like the Hendrix/Winter jam and Hendrix/McLaughlin jam tapes. Jimi's guitar is overpowering in those mixes too. BTW does Danny Kirwan get a solo SisterRay?
Robbie Robinson Danny Kirwan is there for the following Lovelight, but not here. Green and Alllman get more playing time upfront in the mix for Pigpen. I've noticed both Allman, and Green are in the background by the last ten minutes. Then you can hear Allman come back in the last two minutes.
Unfuking real , 69 to 74 probably my most fav yrs for me and Jerry 🎶🍄🎼🌹🙉☠️🍄music. Just happy to be in the right place at the right time and age. Unexplainable 🤪🍄🤪makes me miss him all the more😢☠️🌹☮️🍄💜
1970 - wow what a year that was-I was in the middle of the vast ocean, heading for Australia, 12 years old and watching the skies with my telescope from the deck of a big ocean liner, the sky was open and the future was immense.
Max Grimme I think some people are gonna thumbs down anything the Grateful Dead does. I have no time for that. The Dead were one of the best bands in the history of Rock. Some people never gave their music a chance. They just assume they wouldn’t like it
I sometimes think back to the older disciples in school that told us magic stories about Gratefuld Dead, ABB and other mindblowing bands. Are they still listening to the music that made our mouth flow water like the Niagara Falls? I still do! There`s no stopping even at 60.
There you have it. All right here and now. Refuge from the plague that runs across our land. We will get by! We will survive!! If we've lasted this long, it is far too soon to walk away and give up! Thank you for leaving this for us Jerry! See you in Dead Heaven! Love ya Jerry & Dwane! (~);}
weird shit happened .. 19 yr old classic rock music lover.. dropped acid listened to earthquake country.. live dead.. late 60's early 70's late 70s.. changed my life lsd and dead really changes outlooks/ideas/thoughts on life.. unexplainable wish i couldve experienced.. dad was around dead scene 80-82 die hard fan love the idea the lifestyle boy santa clara was amazing wish i saw jerry
+Christian Curry My Friend If you Missed Jerry than you Kinda Missed the point of the Whole Idea He Was The The Reason The Whole thing Began to Gather traction and Ground He Was What It was All About ~!!! When He Began Noodling Away You Had No Choice But To Lose Yourself Your Very Soul to the Music And Just had to start Dancing Frantically Away And In Syncopated rhythm That you Felt Mother Earth Pounding Away Furiously Away beneath your Feet Which drove you into a Dance that may only be described as a Celebration Of Life, Earth And The Heavens Above All Collaborating as One ~!!! You really Had to Be there To Understand ~!!! :)
Great video was startled to see that "remember Duane allman" written on a mud wall that was outside Vicksburg going to Yazoo City, MS it was there for years Id see it every time we'd go to NOLA from Arkansas went by there a year ago it was gone glad someone had the foresight to take a picture of it
FUCK man something similar happened to me a year ago. There was this beautiful Aoxomoxoa murel in Boulder at the base of The Hill and whoever owns the space fucking painted over the work of art with this ugly brown and yellow color. Didn't even get a picture of it before it was gone, fucking pisses me off so much
Joseph Jennings Mississippi native Franklin TN resident now many years..yessir I remember that Duane etching into the red clay between Vicksburg and Bovina on Interstate 20 early 70s when that stretch of road was new and fresh cut through those Loess bluffs. We had a camphouse at Lake Bruin Louisiana and a deer and duck lease near Steele Bayou so I drove that road from Jackson frequently. It lasted about 5-7 years....man I had not thought of that since I saw your post. I’m sitting out back under a starry night watching that close Mars orbit with my horses nearby my 18 year old son and I listening to this great Duane and Jerry and Peter works I frankly didn’t know about till now.... Amazing...I’m a Pigpen era deadhead which means it was a teens and college band for me but i still listen almost daily in my early 60s Thanks man made my night...truly what a great time to grow up
Big Shout Out to the great WBCN. They played the Beatles 'Get Back' LP months before it came out spectorized as Let It Be. Not only that, but the tapes had Teddy Boy and Junk before Macca pulled an ego trip and put them on his 1st solo. In Fact it was about 90 min. of fantastic stuff.
I'm surprised that stage didn't collapse with a power of talent standing all at once . No egos just musicians , how it should be done , not like today . Big FONTS for headliners (sigh ) How I wish I was there .....
Wait--Peter Green , Duane Allman, and Jerry Garcia all playing together?! Where the hell was I?! (Oh yeah--I was 9 years old. Dammit.) I need to learn time-travel. :)
Amazing session. I saw the Dead at Santa Monica Civic around this time. Before they got huge. "Dark Star" and "Saint Stephan" were key jams in their set. Truly an amazing era. Please God, can I do it again????
Thank you so much for sharing, but also loooooveeee the quotes in the description, wowwww I love that type of stuff when one musician is floored by another and or when you see or hear them appreciate this all for what it is n how rare as much as we, the fans, do
Duane & Jerry were just kids. Playing for kicks. With no boundaries. My first 2 Dead shows were 4/16-17/83, Brendan Byrne, Steve Stills came out after space both nights - first night Black Queen - second night Love the One You're With And I never looked at - or thought of Steve Stills - the same way as I did after those two nights Because when you're trading licks with Jerry - whatever you think you know, or whatever you've done previously in your musical career - won't cut it. You either step up - or you go home 12 years, 188 shows , w the likes of Mick Taylor, Carlos Santana, Clarence Clemons, Branford, The Bangles, The Nevilles, Hot Tuna, Jorma, Steve Miller, etc..sitting in. I would have traded it all of those jams in ( with the exception of Love the One You're With & MSG 9/10/91 w Branford) to watch & listen to these 2, once in a gazillion lifetimes, guitar heroes, live, doing what they were both born 2 do: Pushing the envelope to places only they knew existed, with nothing but 6 strings on their backs
Fil, thank you so much for your analysis of the late great Dickey Betts. I can tell you genuinely love what you do and your passion for music has fueled my love for music. I saw Dickey with his son Duane Betts in Great Southern in the early 2000s and it was a beautiful experience. Keep on rocking my friend! And if you ever come to Denver, I'll take you to a show at Red Rocks Amphitheater.
😮 It’s like the guitars are talking to each other, and they’re going off on tangents during their conversation! I think it’s funny how many people associate the music with enjoying being drunk or taking drugs- I was never one to do that, but I never felt as if I needed anything to enjoy this. Born after 1980, square smothering parents- no wild concerts for me in my youth! The music in itself creates a “high” for me! 😂
That's it. I give in, this song, here, is proof. I give up all my worldly possessions and am moving back to San Francisco to sleep in the doorsteps of businesses with people of like mind. How wrong was I to think that I needed stability, my faith got me out of that mess and by God, I'll be damned if my faith wont put me right back in it!@@!#!#!@
Unfortunately, San Francisco is not SF anymore. Gone is the bohemian culture, the let people follow their own path sort of place it was in the 50s and 60s when it spawned the arts, poetry and music unique in a mundane world. It is now for the very poor, mostly mentally ill homeless and young google coders who have a fit if their lattes are not served in a cup with their image on it. There is still Chinatown, but even Chinese are the new scapegoats. Rents start at $5000 for a studio without windows or lift. The smell that permeates is not hash but human feces. The new rock stars are Google and Facebook. The music scene left in the early 70s, mostly moved across the GG Bridge to Southern Marin but that is also out of sight expensive, The two-bedroom home I sold in 1987 sold again in 2002, the last time I visited it, for $4.5 million because of the view...which was spectacular but for that money someone could hire a helicopter for even better view daily for a lot less. I still have a house in San Rafael that is not anything special but large, but I deeded it to my daughter for the rental income when I moved out of the country. I gave everything away, and moved to a country I did not speak the language, with only 2 suitcases and $6000. That was 2000 and never been happier and lower stress since the late 60s, with far more access to culture and fun. I miss a northern California that does not exist anymore, with the Sierra and north coast, and SF. It is the society that has ruined it, divided, angry, greedy, intolerant, and hateful. Millions of Americans move out of the US every year since 2008, more than immigrants arriving. The only thing that keeps the US together is the common propaganda that all are submerged in daily, unlike any country ever. Almost all that is believed is false, because of the onslaught of 24/7 propaganda that has been every effective in keeping people at each other's throats and keeping them down. It is a sad place but most are convinced it is the best in the world, solely because they have noo seen the world. I have been in 91 countries and I get the impression you would love the freedom and lack of stress in any of them compared to the US. Get a ticket, a backpack and just go, anywhere. Quality of life is better in most countries of the world now.
truly grateful [no pun intended]. after 45 years i have to limit how often i listen to duane. heaven forbid it should ever sound like background music. so this is another gem for the collection. thanks for the upload.
