Lead Belly, also spelled Leadbelly, by name of Huddie William Ledbetter, (born January 21, 1885?, Jeter Plantation, near Mooringsport, Louisiana, U.S.-died December 6, 1949, New York, New York), American folk-blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose ability to perform a vast repertoire of songs in a variety of styles, in conjunction with his notoriously violent life, made him a legend. His influence stretches far and wide from Nirvana to The Beatles.
Musical from childhood, Lead Belly played accordion, 6- and (more usually) 12-string guitar, bass, and harmonica. He led a wandering life, learning songs by absorbing oral tradition. For a time he worked as an itinerant musician with Blind Lemon Jefferson. In 1918 he was imprisoned in Texas for murder. According to tradition, he won his early release in 1925 by singing a song for the governor of Texas when he visited the prison.
After resuming a life of drifting, in 1930 Lead Belly was convicted of attempted murder and imprisoned in the Angola, Louisiana, prison farm. There he was “discovered” by the folklorists John Lomax and Alan Lomax, who were collecting songs for the Library of Congress. A campaign spearheaded by the Lomaxes secured Lead Belly’s release in 1934, and he embarked on a concert tour of eastern colleges. Subsequently, the Lomaxes published 48 of his songs together with commentary (Negro Folk Songs as Sung by Lead Belly, 1936). Lead Belly performed and recorded extensively. His first commercial recordings were made for the American Record Corporation, which did not take advantage of his huge folk repertoire but rather encouraged him to sing blues. He settled in New York City in 1937. He struggled to make enough money, and in 1939-40 he was jailed again, this time for assault. After he was released, he briefly worked with Woody Guthrie, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, and others as the Headline Singers, performed on radio, and, in 1945, appeared in a short film. In 1949, shortly before his death, he gave a concert in Paris.
Lead Belly died penniless, but within six months his song “Goodnight, Irene” became a million-record hit for the singing group the Weavers; along with other pieces from his repertoire, among them “The Midnight Special” and “Rock Island Line,” it became a standard.
Lead Belly was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig's disease (a motor neuron disease). Lead Belly died later that year in New York City. He was buried in the Shiloh Baptist Church cemetery, in Mooringsport, Louisiana, 8 miles (13 km) west of Blanchard, in Caddo Parish.
Lead Belly’s legacy is extraordinary. His recordings reveal his mastery of a great variety of song styles and his prodigious memory; his repertory included more than 500 songs. His rhythmic guitar playing and unique vocal accentuations make his body of work both instructive and compelling. His influence on later musicians-including Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, and Kurt Cobain-was immense.
Lead Belly was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame (1986) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1988). In 2015 the Smithsonian Institution’s Smithsonian Folkways record label released a five-CD box set of his recordings.

Oh my gosh, this is like a dream come true for me to see Lead Belly's grave and what a beautiful grave it is!! I can't even tell you how much I enjoyed his music as a teenager! Him and Odetta were huge to me during my teenage years! They both were very similar in their music. I love folk music because it's so raw (if that's the right word?). Lead Belly's life may have been controversial, but there was nothing controversial about his music! He led the way for people like Joan Biaz, Judy Collins, Bob Dylan, James Taylor and many other great folk singers. Thanks for doing this, Scott. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Thank you also for visiting the other graves, it is so sad all of those lost lives, especially the very young ones. Don't pay attention to what people say about you. We love you just the way you are and because of the way you are! My dad used to say "consider the source" .... so consider the source and carry on. Scott! I'm so excited about this video!! I was a 12-string guitar player too for many years, influenced by John Denver who was probably also influenced by Lead Belly. Thank you. You made my day once again!!!

@SCOTT ON TAPE - Your Pop Culture Tour Guide I was at a John Denver concert and saw him with a 12 string and after hearing it I had to get one too. It almost sounds like a harp when you play a 12 string compared to a 6 string. It's an incredible difference! I haven't played guitar in probably 40 years though. There's a reason ... I do have a 6 string in my storage though. I used to play at church and prayer groups I was in. I was a weird teenager huh? Lol ... like I said, don't pay attention to what other people say. Just be you!

Great video Scot, but also very sad when you see more and more young people, gone in an instant…that young man who passed on Xmas eve , left a mother, wife and son…a child lost his father Xmas Eve…how tragic. No death is easy to come to terms with, and I didn’t know much at all about Lead Belly, and how sad he suffered!! Jailed twice for murder! But released early, married, but I didn’t see or hear of any children. His music IS TIMELESS!! You just helped to bring his name to the forefront again, which is great! But I’m sad to learn he was only 61 and died of Lee Gerrig disease. ( sorry I havnt spelt correctly) all these famous Blues and guitar players are great teachers of their time, inspiring so many young players to come out of the shadows and shine a bright light. Leadbelly died in 1949!! That’s 73 years ago Scott!! How many modern pop groups will still be remembered in that time into the future??? Or will have influenced anyone the way Leadbelly did?? I wonder too if either of his brothers had musical talent and played alongside him? His star still shines, and you gave it a quick polish up, so well done Scott…..Leadbelly would be pleased to think you still enjoyed his music! Godbless you! 🙋‍♀️💕😘🙏💐

I love these videos, I like to look up some of the individuals as well. It's interesting sometimes to learn about the person's life. It can also be intersting to see what happened to them. I also feel that having more people acknowledge these lost lives is powerful itself. I'm not into mysticism or anything but I think holding these people in mind and just taking a moment to acknowledge their life and pay your respects is powerful and sending those vibes out is a force of positivity. That young man who passed on Christmas Eve was shot outside his home while holding a three-year-old who was also hit. The child recovered. Heartbeaking. I hope that young man is at peace. He deserves our respect and aknowledgement.

How wonderfully done. The cemetery looks old, but still beautiful. Never knew exactly where he was buried, but - growing up in the Dallas area - his music and presence was always felt. There are major streets named after him (Ledbetter) and him and Blind Lemon Jefferson helped to carve Deep Ellum into a popular area to play music....at least it still was in the late 80s and into the mid 90s. The area comes in and out of style as safety issues come and go.....but anyway. It was great to see where he is buried....the cemetery may be sad, but it is beautiful in it's own way as well. I dig your emotion and respect in these videos. And the line: "Take time, look around" is so apropos to these times more than ever. Thanx for what you do and thanx for how you present these "little films of life's great gratitude to Life." Or so that's my take on it. Again, loved the video. Until the next one - take care...especially when invited out for biscuits on the bow.

This is great, thanks, been a fan for decades; listened to sooo much Leadbelly, especially in hard times. He's on of the few artists that makes me wanna sing. too. Leadbelly was like a funnel channeling old slave songs, work songs, corn songs, hollers, blues, stomps...etc... etc.... (and don't worry about walking on graves, i just worked for over a year in a cemetery and it's not disrespectful unless your intention is to be disrespectful; has nothing to do with out dated superstitions.... because "when you believe in things, that you don't understand, then you suffer, superstition ain't the way" -Stevie Wonder.) Keep up the good work, Much Love.

I knew about Mooringsport, my family is from natchitoches (also north Louisiana where steel magnolias was filmed and Jim Croces plane crashed). About 7 years ago I went to Karnack Texas to fish at Johnson’s and an old man was there, he really reminded me of lead belly..: he said he was from there and going to a festival or something about him and I thought he said his folks knew him when he was a kid, we asked where he was buried and he told us and invited us to come, we were meeting my uncle from back home there and were going back to Houston so didn’t have time. Dunno if they still have The event
