The Grayl Geopress: 3 Systems to Carry it in the Field
The Grayl Geopress in my opinion is the quickest, easiest and most reliable system to filter water safely in the field. The Grayl Geopress or Ultralight belong in any bushcraft kit or survival kit. I have been using the Grayl Geopress since before it entered to market as I was fortunate enough to have a prototype early on. I have experimented with 3 different systems to carry this essential piece of gear in the field. Let's take a look at them

Matt, ty for all your videos I appreciate the time you put in to teach us. I used my geo press for the first time yesterday. I did pre filter it with a bandana, Unfortunately, when I opened the top to take a drink I looked inside and noticed alot of little white particulates floating in it😠. I took it home and cleaned everything. I rinsed the filter out from both ends, and let it air dry. Has anyone else ever had this happen??

I own both types of Grayl. I use the smaller one for travel and the larger one for bushcraft. Here in Vietnam you can't be sure of you water source so where I live here in Hoi an Vietnam we have a water filter built in for our drinking water at our home,but out and about I drink bottled water. But carrying the small Grayl when traveling I'm always sure to get safe water. Thanks Matt for the fine video ATB Sam Adler from Vietnam

I'd like to suggest an alternative to the Pathfinder Bottle carrier. I use an Orca Tactical Molle Bottle Carrier (Amazon, $22.50) instead, since it is more flexible. The primary difference is that the Orca has a bottom zipper that allows me to get out the cup without having to remove the Grayl and dig to the bottom of the bag. My entire system contains: Grayl Geopress, a Wal-Mart Stanley 2-cup Cook set ($15, pot handle and lid only), a WalMart Stainless Cup ($5, the Stanley fits inside and the Stanley lid also fits this), a "Hot Lips insert for the cup (no burned lips), a long Spork, 4-5 knee-high ladies nylons (pre-filters for the Grayl, also surround the Grayl and keep any rattles down), and a folded bandanna. In the Orca's outside pocket I carry an Esbit folding stove, a spare ferro rod, a few folded foil squares and a plastic bag of coffee bags, tea bags, bouillon powder packets, salt & pepper packs, and still have a small space for a Clif bar.

I use the Grayl Ultralight. Water is heavy, so I like the smaller size. It fits perfect in the bottle pocket’s, on all my different packs.

I carry the ultralight as well daily. It is in my "EDC" bag. I carry a small pack with me whenever I leave the house with my phone, knife, spare cash, the Grayl, medications, etc. I have used it some many times when I didn't want to drink "faucet" water. Our local water has a strong chlorine taste that doesn't agree with me. The UL takes carry of that no problem. Thank you for tuning in and commenting!

I'll be honest I have a love-hate relationship with my Grayl, in North America. I have the NA qualifier because viruses really aren't a problem here. The love is I can have my Grayl and my Pathfinder bottle and I have two containers and my filter so it means less moving parts. The hate is weight, bulk and longevity. My Sawyer Squeeze will get rid of 99.99% of bacteria and protozoa and will filter literally over 3 million gallons of cared for properly. It also only weighs 3oz. So on a day hike or for minimalist overnight/multi-day trips I will bring the Grayl but, again just in North America and Western Europe, if I am using a typical multi-day, multi-mile backing trip it's the Sawyer because of weight and longevity. Also I can be lazy and set it up as a gravity feed ;). On a side note. With my day pack kit I use the Helikon-Tex Foxtrot MK-2, Grayl on one side Pathfinder bottle and cup on the other. For a minimalist overnight/multi-day I add the Numbat and perhaps Savotta Jaakari S depending on season (insulation) and duration (need more food.)
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 2 года назад
I agree with you on size and I too often use the Sawyer. For the money, anyone who uses filtration would just about have to consider adding a Sawyer to their arsenal. They both have their places and I think you application of each makes a lot of sense. Thank you for tuning in and sharing your ideas! Take care John.

@@blackhatbushcraft I use a Grael Geo Press, recent purchase (3 mos.). I’ve been using an MSR trail filter. The MSR did not filter viruses, but did filter chemicals, chlorine being one of them. Have carried Chlorine for years now. I have no problem adding a little to the water if questionable. Allow it to set for the regulated time, then filter it. If I’ve already have camp set and will need water anyway, then I prefilter, then boil it. Water for freeze dried food & coffee. I’ve only lately started carrying a Tarp! Most of my camping has been on the ground, or sometimes on a raised bed. Have been very fortunate not to have been heavily rained upon! Some sprinkles, and a lite dusting of snow 3 or 4 times. But always warm & dry! Always had a piece of plastic for a ground cloth though. Almost never shared my bed with wildlife. Two exceptions are; 1; I was just about asleep when I felt a tickling in my right ear. Started to rub my ear, and felt something crawl down the ear canal, & rub against my ear drum. Since it was dark, I figured it was a spider! I called for the Navy Corpsman, he checked it and confirmed it was a spider.He was going to take it out with tweezers, but it kept pushing back against my eardrum. I told him to forget it. I’m going to sleep! The spider will be gone by morning! And it was! I had another Marine check, and he said it was gone. It was supposed to be a Division Exercise, but apparently some officers didn’t get the word!?! So we, Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, spent a second night in the same spot..I stood FireWatch from 2200 - 2230. Then I couldn’t fall asleep, so I snuck a flask of Blackberry Brandy out of my Alice pack, took 2 or 3 swigs, put it away, and fell asleep in about 10 - 15 minutes. We didn’t set up Shelter Halves, because the “ Enemy” would be thru the area about 0530-0600. I just laid my shelter half on the 10-12 inch grass, poncho was next, then the Poncho Liner. I pulled half of the poncho & liner over me. Woke up about about 0130. Hard time breathing. I figured one of the Marines standing FireWatch pulled a clump of grass out of the ground and placed it on top of the poncho, over my face. One of 3rd platoon’s Fire Watch was walking towards me. I asked him if he had seen any of 2nd Platoon’s FW place a grass clod on my face. He had just come on duty, but hadn’t seen anyone near me! I woke up about 0200, Hard to breath. I felt something on my face.I thought, “ what the hell! I slid my hands under the poncho up near my chin, then threw the poncho off my face. Shined flashlight around but could not see anything.I laid back down and tried to sleep. After a few minutes, I felt the poncho pull tight across my face. I felt the legs stepping up to position over my mouth & nose. It was a female Tarantula, I swatted the poncho again & sent the Tarantula flying. She was just trying to keep warm! I shined my flashlight around but couldn’t find her. Went back to sleep, woke up at 0500. The Tarantula never did come back! I knew it was a female, because they’re full-bodied. The Male has a small abdomen, and doesn’t weigh very much overall.

Hi Matt, thanks again for a great video and introducing me to Stitched Gear! They have some nice products that I'm looking into. As for the Grayl, it's my go to currently. I generally carry it in my backpack at the top of the bag on hikes for easy access. For the longest time I used the Sawyer Mini and Sawyer Squeeze. They are both great products in my opinion, especially the Squeeze as it filters water faster than the Mini. Back in July of this year, we took a trip to Glacier National Park and I opted to switch out the Sawyer with the Grayl Geopress just to give it a try. I was not disappointed! We hiked up to Iceberg Lake and ended up having to filter water for at least a dozen people who had no filtration system with them. The speed in which the Grayl works made it worth it's weight gold that day and I have no intention of switching out with another filtration system anytime soon.

There's a thin line / trench thats the width of paracord that runs around the neck of the bottom, I think the easiest way is use that and some paracord and rigging it to a belt or just a length long enough to go around your shoulder. Another cheap way to carry these is wrapped in a shemagh then tied around your waist, the bottle sits nicely in the small of your back. Thanks for the vid!

Great video! I love my Grayl GeoPress. I saw it first on Corporals Corner and had to have one. Been using it for day hikes (and once for backpacking) for about a year and carrying it can be a pain. Right now I use a carabiner and attach it to my Helikon Tex Foxtrot strap via a Night Ize carabiner. I do the same with my Condor day pack. It flops around ALOT with this carry configuration. That Coghlan's strap could be a great option! Thanks for sharing!

That must be the new Pathfinder 4.5" H2O bag, the Grayl fits very loose. That is a nice bag. Thanks for including the really budget carrier. The common man like me needs those ideas. I think I spent 15 bucks on one and no strap.

Sure thing! I understand completely as these are challenging times for many. Also, gear doesn't have to be overcomplicated or expensive necessarily. I think while our niche has been highly developed over that last few years with tons of great new gear options that didn't used to be available, there is still a place for minimal, simple and cost effective gear that can get the job done. Sometimes you get what you pay for but sometimes you get more. I thought that one was definitely one of those cases. I know it was money well spent for me! Thank you for your time and interest!

I have the Pathfinder bottle kit set up as a minimalist survival kit and think the multi-functionality of the cup set in cooking and boiling food and even charing tinder is worth keeping the bottle kit in there. What I did to clip in the grayl in addition to the bottle kit was just unclip one end of the straps from the d rings and thread it through the hole in the grayl's handle. It's a tight squeeze but it does fit. Then just clip the d ring back in and you've got a way to pretty quickly filter water and extra capacity to carry more water if needed. If you position the grayl at the end of the strap towards the main body of the bottle set it carries pretty well.

Nice idea. The bottle set is one of my absolutely most used pieces of kit. I can't imagine not having that set as a part of my gear. I do carry the canteen sets sometimes depending on what I am doing but the bottle set has always been one of my most used and favorite pieces of gear. Well it may not be suitable for everyone, but I often use a dump pouch for mine. I have three dump pouches that roll up into tiny packages that attach to my daypack, my gun scabbard/sheath that I keep on my 4 wheeler, and often just my belt. I think they were called roly-poly dump pouches or something like that. I've had them for years now. Just another option. I'll be trying some of yours. Great video, Brotherman.

Sure thing. I like the Sawyer products and own and use those as well. The advantage to the Grayl is convenience and being fast when you are on the move. The Sawyer requires an additional container or two and also needs to be back flushed if you are out for any time. For that you need the syringe, etc. Again, I use the Sawyer squeeze and the original but mostly when I am in a camp for a day or two and just want o set it up to filter in a gravity style system. I actually did a video on the Sawyer last Summer I believe. Thank s for tuning in and sharing your thoughts.

@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 2 года назад
Hmm, I am not certain about that area and if there is a particular condition that is unique there. I would say however that the Grayl should filter out any biological pathogens that you would be trying to kill in the process of boiling. It isn't a bad idea to boil water and then filter however, there are times when it isn't necessary or even feasible to do so. The Grayl should do what you need it to do.

Well, what I use is a Sawyer filter system that screws onto the top of a standard water bottle. Have never had an issue with performance (never gotten sick), but when carrying a water bottle with the Sawyer attached, the bottle can get fairly tall and the filter is most always exposed. So I have been looking at this Grayl Geopress as a replacement and like what I see, hear and read about. I also like the idea of carrying it in the Pathfinder's water bottle bag, to me that makes the most sense. Thank you for the product review video, very informative. Side question; large ferro rods seem to be hard to find, only ones I can find are the small ones that don't last from walmart. Where can I find a decent one at? Have a great day!
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 2 года назад
Thank you so much for tuning in and I too own some Sawyer filters. They work just fine and for me, they are best suited to using in a camp setting where I will be stationary for a period of time. I love the Grayl for being on the move and anytime you just want to keep it simple. The bag does offer some good flexibility to carry extra gear on board and possibly is the best protection for the filter itself. As for the large ferro rods, if you will check the description box of this video, I have a linktree. There is a link to Self Reliance Outfitters. Look up the HD6 ferro rod. It is of excellent quality. I also have an Amazon link with a fire kit section set up. I have listed ferro rods, lighters, magnifying glasses, etc that I own, use and recommend. I hope those links will be helpful. If I have it listed, I own it and use it personally. If you have any questions about anything you see there, don't hesitate to ask. Take care!

I'm going to be the outlier here...I carry an MSR Guardian. It weighs a pound. It's fiddly and has moving parts. It was REALLY expensive. But it will filter all the water I'll ever need for the rest of my life with minimal maintenance. It's extremely fast regardless of the water source. I can fill a 6 liter water bladder in minutes. I'm a little weird when it comes to water! I'm also not a through hiker, I'm not going miles and miles. We hike into the woods as far as we need to, set up camp, then make a run for water. It's also part of our home preparedness gear along with some other redundant filters. But it seems like a great piece of gear, hell what's one more filter? LOL
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 2 года назад
I have seen the MSR filter as well and it is a good piece of gear as far as I can tell. I also own several other filters from Sawyer, Katedyn, Aquamira, etc as well. They all have their strengths and weaknesses but at the end of the day, they all have worked for the most part and that is the most important thing. I like having multiple filters available just in case they are needed. I think every home should have a few options available just in case. Thank you for tuning in and sharing what has worked for you!

@@blackhatbushcraft I got it on sale for a little over $300, usually $350 if you can find one. If soldiers can use it that is a testament to its durability. I have the MSR with the ceramic filter it never broke on me. It’s not hype and it’s not a gimmick, this thing backflushes itself with every pump so the flow rate beats any filter out there. Little worry about cross contamination too. Obviously I’m a fan! But I’ve also filtered water through a cloth and boiled it so I’m prepared if it does break. We have a creek through our property and when the pandemic and city riots started I knew we were prepared for whatever. Anyway, long winded response, love your work!

All in a matter of seconds. I have never used a Filter that's better than this one. @blackhatbushcraft 2 года назад
There possibly is a Maxpedition bottle holder that might fit, I am not sure. I too own and use Sawyers and they are good filters and well priced. The Grayl in my opinion definitely is not a gimmick and has served me well over the past 3 years approximately of regular use. It is just a different approach and is an all in one unit as opposed to a Sawyer. Takes 8 to 10 seconds once you collect to filter the water and you can then be on the move. I like being able to simply carry and drink water from the same container it was filtered in. No bags, no syringe and no back flush. Again, Sawyers are good filters but I prefer them in a base camp where I will be staying at least a day or more. A Grayl excels when you are on the move. Gear is like anything else, it comes down to personal preference and what suits you. I appreciate you tuning in and commenting.

@@blackhatbushcraft I understand what you are saying, but over the years i have owned most MSR filter systems and the Katadyn water filter systems as well as well as the Lifesaver Liberty Filter Bottle, and the Lifesaver bottle 4000UF (both of which leaked in my pack) and a host of other gravity and pump filters and in the end they all failed me, I just prefer filters with no moving parts. The first reliable filter i ever owned was a military grade (IWPS ) inline filter and not long after that the Sawyer line of filters were released. Since then i have used them exclusively. like i said i have tried them all but Sawyer is the fastest most reliable filter for the outdoors i have ever owned, i have a mini rigged inline on my bladder with an active inline charcoal filter and i carry a Sawyer Squeeze gravity filter and two Platypus bags for a base camp set up and not once have they failed me, i also carry a couple of Aquamira Frontier Pro straws for a quick sip on the go when i need one. after years of experience filtering water i just cant see spending $90 for another filter system and bottle combo that is bound to at sometime fail and its always a seal, broken pump or interior mechanism that fails and that is not something you can fix when you are out in the bush... id rather spend 10 min getting water a 1000 times than 10 seconds a 100 times. its just my personal choice. to each their own i guess...
