The Great American Cross-Country Road Race (UK re-release title: American Road Race) is a racing video game written by Alex DeMeo for the Atari 8-bit computers and published by Activision in 1985. It was ported to the Apple II and Commodore 64 The game puts the player in the position of a driver of a high-performance car, racing across
the United States while passing through its major cities. Obstacles include weather, road conditions, limited fuel, and the highway patrol. The changing time of day affects gameplay, because the other cars drive faster at night.

Ah the sweet memories of my childhood come back to me with this one.. I have spent hours trying to beat my own record, of course, each time carefully saving the progress. Occasionally, I played it with friends, mostly switching between cities, but sometimes we went for competing with each others' times kind of a gameplay. The graphics and sounds were fine, the gameplay was tight and the resulting fun made this game a truly memorable one.

1988 on a C64 I played this for weeks over and over again. Like in your vid : LA NY was my favourite route and I often made it in about 19 mins, 1x in just 18+ mins just by racing at full speed overtaking only on the curb of the road. Sometimes I hit an advertising plate but this cost less time than riding among all the other cars :D. And yes -- when you were fast enough the radar was too slow for you :DD Thanks for posting these memories 👍

One of the greatest games for the 8-bits... I spent hours, days, weeks with this one as a 13-14 year old on my 130XE..

I put so many hours into this game on my Atari 65XE in the mid to late eighties. I was twelve when it came out in ‘85 and I was seriously addicted. Loved it!

Hell yeah, I remember this when I was 7...could finish the whole thing without a crash at full pace. Can't really remember best times, but 19 minutes something rings a bell

had this game! did not remember i had it untill i saw this video! i loved this game....back when atari titles were getting hard to find...most of the good games were being ported to the c64..

used to love this lol, was thinking about the game the other day and couldnt think of the title! so funny how this vid has now popped up! i remember thinking this game was realistic back then lol did the engine used to blow and you have to get out and push? or if run out of fuel, swear youd see a little man pushing. remember the joy of the city appearing as you got closer! dont think i ever finished the game tho.

One of the greatest games I had for the Atari 800xl I was addicted to this game one night a drunk driver hit a pole I was playing this game and power went out and I still was sitting there kinda pissed until power came back on 😂 I was just a kid then.
