The great and rare 'Mills Brothers' story (Part I)
This group of four brothers (John jr, Herb, Harry and Donald) from Utah USA started their unpresidented singing career in 1922 when these boys were between 7 and 12 years old, and became professionals in 1925.

This story brings tears of happiness and joy and deep heartfelt sorrow to me. I discovered them as a youth right at the height of Beatle mania and have loved their incomparable “sound” ever since. I know I always will.

My grandfather played this music as I was growing up. Always have loved their sound/s. Didn't Ella Fitzgerald learn from them to make the sounds of the instruments? Has "their heir's" picked up the talents? Hope so. Thank you for providing the history of this family. I'm 75 yrs. and still love to listen to their music

Ohio's own...MILLS BROTHERS!!! Thanks for the video series. There may never be another group of singers like them. However, it's always great to hear records (both personally and on radio), and see movies/movie shorts, and television footage of that wonderful group of men who contributed to the development of American popular music. And what a way they had with it.

WOW!!!! They are exquisite!!!! They are often honoured by the BEE GEEs - as their very early influence in music, esp with their harmonies, because their dad, Mr Gibbs, was a Drummer and Band Leader, in the '40s, and brought home many Mills Bros records. Now l know who they were - beautiful human beings and musicians.

It's amazing that even when they were well over 60 they still had such great technique (and such gorgeous voices) -- I'm not being ageist, just noting that singers' voices degrade over time, so their control is, no pun intended, breathtaking. Thanks for sharing this.

The mills Brothers manager Henry Miller of General Artist Corp. Mailed me a copy of this show in 1990 right before it was broadcast on Pbs. Knowing myself and many other musicians in Cincinnati backed up the mills many times when they were in town. They were God given sweethearts to work with. Summer of 90 a few of us went to their family reunion in piqua. Donald was the only one left by then, dressed in golfing garb it was great to see him again. By 99 the mills Brothers were just a beautiful memory. Chip and his dad did a fantastic job unbelievable.

I must have seen them around that time. I was about 12 and definitely the youngest person there. As I recall, it was a Mills brother, a Mills son, and a Mills nephew. The Mills Bros. were all my parents played, and I was transfixed.

@@andycatherene you saw Donald, his son chip, and his other son Allen. They worked together from 84 to 90. What Donald had his leg removed because of diabetes. Then Donald passed in 99.

Growing up,we were only allowed to listen to The Mills Brothers. Born in Piqua,raised in Bellefontaine,our late father played high school football with Donald Mills in the 1930’s,at Bellefontaine High School. When they had an out of state gig,they would call our late Uncle Russell to escort them into the back roads of town. Uncle Russell would drive his car at night ,pick the Mills Brothers up ,take them home. They would get their car later because the townspeople wouldn’t give them any peace. They would be home,and no one would know it. 😂 The greatest talent came from Ohio,The Mills Brothers,Dean Martin.Doris Day,Phyllis Diller,Nancy Wilson.

I think my Dad who was a fan of the Mills Bros. and he thought Harry was always blind which I don't know about. When Harry was on T.V. he always looked sighted but who knows? Harry sure lost a lot of weight when this video was filmed.
@StationAgentProductions
@StationAgentProductions 5 лет назад
joe welnack Harry had diabetes later in life and by the end he was completely blind... this video wasn’t made too long before he died so I would imagine he was blind or close to blind during the filming of this.

Harry was not always blind. Only as he got older and the ravages of diabetes did he lose his sight. That is also why he lost so much weight.

For me, I'm a great admirer of the Mills Brothers. I put it down to "good taste" But, I'm not sure that carrying on into the 70s and 80s was a good idea. Sure, if people were prepared to pay money to see them, but I can't help thinking that in the last years they should have retired.
