The most glorious film about Rome since La Dolce Vita. Going to Rome for the first time in October, will be watching both films again before my adventure begins.
I watch this trailer sometimes when I want to be reminded of how magnificent this movie was. I went back to the theatre 3 times in a row when it first came out. ...And is STILL not on Netflix! Shame
This movie is a master piece..First time I saw it I was speechless for about an hour ..The feelings were too much, too raw. Plus my beloved Rome, the city where I lived for 5 years . The beauty, the magic and the filth showed to perfection.
I envy you the eternal city cannot be matched , had our honeymoon there after seeing the Great beauty been back twice since ,words fail me if I live anywhere in the world it would be Rome….
Must be in my top 10 favorite movies. Trully special in philosofical substance, pure aesthetics, soundtrack, Italy and plenty of room for viewer to fill in the blanks. However one must know Sorentino drew a lot of ideas from Fellini.
I still like the movie eight years later! I was in Rome just before it came out and Naples later. So many characters! The co-screenwriter (Umberto Contarello) should get quite a lot of praise, not just Sorrentino, Sorrentino's subsequent movies, where not as good, when he himself just wrote and directed i.e. "Youth", but "Jep" got over the past right at the end!!! His heart was not there, but it finally was, after it got healed from insanity!!
Sometimes I read reviews for a movie I want to watch, when I saw this trailer I was like...it doesn't seem to be good at all. But if you say it's that good i'll give it a try!
I see your point, it's bizarre, and for sure different from a trailer of a blockbuster from Hollywood. But is it bad? I will give a second thought. This trailer captures the two sides of Jep, merging them nicely in a 2 minutes intro and, the great beauty of the film is very well shown to the viewer. Maybe it's just that a unique film has a unique trailer.
Not one thing looks beautiful in this trailer. Just a mediocre splash of ugly nightlife. Where's the Beauty everyone keeps talking about? Why show only the mediocre shots in a trailer?
Give it a try. This movie is an absolute masterpiece. And the trailer is very good actually. It captures the contradiction: the ugliness of the life of these middle aged people that consists only of meaningless parties and solitude against something else, the great beauty. To understand what this great beauty is you have to watch the movie. The solemnity and realness of the few scenes in the second part of the trailer give a hint, though.
