After the second night in Edinburgh, the GB XII embarked on it's most eagerly day with an run along the lonely branch to Stranraer. With it's steep grades and scenic landscape, the previous two occasions that the GB has venture have proved popular both with passengers and photographers alike.
The tour set out from Edinburgh early that morning with Black 5 44871 again at the helm, this time with the assistance form B1 1264 which had travelled over from the NYMR the previous day.
After a brisk run along the Ayrshire coast, the pair headed onto the branch, and soon encountered the climb of Girvan Bank, which at it's steepest is 1 in 54. An impressive assault which made good time meant departure from the lonely loop at Glenwhilly was met on time, as well as arrival at Stranraer itself.
The weather was stunning with bright sunshine for most of the day, and helped to create a wonderful atmosphere as the two locos prepared for departure from Stranraer in top and tail formation owing to the age of point work. But a successful day none the less, look out for Day Severn coming soon. Hope you enjoy!
