Why are all the citrus trees dying in Florida?
What can we learn from this?
We take a break from the project at Jubilee Organics in Palma Sola, FL, to talk about the new citrus trees that are now going in & why we didn't originally include them in the design (or any of our designs & personal plantings.)
The burden of citrus monoculture across the state over the past century came with an all time cost: a disease called 'Greening' or 'HLB'. This disease, or bacteria spread by the Asian Citrus Psyllid, has completely plummeted the industry & left it near impossible to grow citrus organically in the majority of the state.
From Wikipedia:
HLB (HuangLongBing) is a disease distinguished by the common symptoms of yellowing of the veins and adjacent tissues; followed by splotchy mottling of the entire leaf, premature defoliation, dieback of twigs, decay of feeder rootlets and lateral roots, and decline in vigor, ultimately followed by the death of the entire plant.
Affected trees have stunted growth, bear multiple off-season flowers (most of which fall off), and produce small, irregularly shaped fruit with a thick, pale peel that remains green at the bottom and tastes very bitter.
