The climb to Mortirolo from Mazzo is the classic one, involves starting from Mazzo in Valtellina (552 m) and salt for 12.5 km with extreme slopes.
The start is at once challenging and will face the first bends with the slope that continues to climb relentlessly. The first 5.5 km are the worst with slopes that reach even touching 18%. The last kilometers are more ridable, with spaces where you can catch your breath.
The climb of the Mortirolo from Mazzo, from Valtellina side, is considered by many as the toughest in Europe. The average gradient of the climb is over 10% and the maximum gradient reaches 18%, to an altitude of about 1300 m.
In 1990 this mountain secondary road, characterized by prohibitive slopes, has been inserted in the path of the Giro d'Italia. The flight solo of an emerging, named Marco Pantani in 1994 made her famous and popular destination for all lovers of racing bikes.
11th hairpin was a monument dedicated to the champion, who remembers him on the ground he prefers: the great climbs of the Giro d'Italia.
With the racing bike, the alternatives to reach the pitch are really varied: from Valtellina side - starting from Mazzo, from Tovo or Grosio - and the Brescia side, departing from Monno.
