Fairport Convention - Liege & Lief (1969) In May 1969, three albums into a career that was on an upward trajectory, Fairport were on their way back to London from a gig in Birmingham, when their van crashed on the motorway, killing teenage drummer, Martin Lamble & Jeannie Franklyn (fashion designer girlfriend of guitarist, Richard Thompson) and injuring other members of the band. Just seven months later, still bearing the physical and mental scars of such a traumatic incident, Fairport - with new drummer, Dave Mattacks - released this monumental album which was, in 2002, voted "the most important folk album of all time" by BBC listeners. Gone were the breezy covers of American singer-songwriters which featured on previous releases, replaced by five dark and brooding British traditional ballads, one storming set of tunes and three original tracks written in the folk idiom. But, make no bones about it, if the material was folk, the band still smoked. This is no finger-in-the-ear, arran sweater, nasal whining set. Liege & Lief is a proper rock record, with singer Sandy Denny's glorious voice, the cherry on top of an already delicious cake. It may not be the first folk-rock album, but L&L pushed the boundaries further than anything that had come before it. Born out of adversity, it is a unique and supremely important album.

Heart - Self titled - the last few albums had decent business but failed to generate any major chart positions. Heart is the eighth studio album by American rock band Heart, released on June 21, 1985, by Capitol Records. The album continued the band's transition into mainstream rock, a genre that yielded the band its greatest commercial success. Marking the band's Capitol Records debut, it became Heart's only album to top the US Billboard 200 to date. The album was eventually certified quintuple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA)-in contrast to Heart's previous two releases, Private Audition and Passionworks, which remain uncertified-proving that adopting a glam metal direction helped resurrect the band. The album yielded the band's first number-one single, "These Dreams", along with four other singles: "What About Love", "Never", "Nothin' at All", and "If Looks Could Kill", with the first four singles reaching the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. At the 28th Annual Grammy Awards, the album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. And were also invheavy rotation on MTV. Ann Wilson explains that the reason why the album was self-titled is because the band couldn't think of anything, and since not much of the album was written by them, they said "Just call it Heart" at the last minute.

Hi Pete. My pick today is EVER by IQ (1993). The return of original singer Peter Nicholls to this British neo-prog band. While he was away, the band moved more into commercial pop territory, but it didn't really work out (much as I liked the two albums they released, and I saw them live supporting Mike & The Mechanics). But with Peter back in the fold, they reverted to neo-prog, and Ever is one of their strongest. Favourite tracks the epic Further Away, and their finale Leap of Faith/Came Down, featuring some fabulous guitar from Michael Holmes. The band are still going strong, with a new album coming later this year.

#8. Mountain - "Mystic Fire" (2002) Leslie and Corky with Bassist Chuck Hearne. Mountain has four 'comeback' LP's, but I chose "Mystic Fire' because it's their last with original material and and it features a heavy, 7+ minute orchestrated (by Corky) version of "Nantucket Sleighride" (sung by Leslie), dedicated to Felix.

Bee Gees - Main Course - this album, which featured Jive Talkin and Nights on Broadway, led the way to Saturday Night Fever just a few years later, and a reinvention of their sound. Day 8. The Byrds - S/T When this was released, many of us looked forward to the jingle jangle of the Rickenbacker 12 string of Roger McGuinn. What we got was a nice set of country rock tinged songs contributed by everyone and Neil Young. It was also a well-done record. The vocal harmonies are tight and instrumentation well produced. Rainbow - Down to Earth (1979) Only one yr removed from "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll" but anytime Dio departs it's a seismic shift. I wasn't really a Graham Bonnet fan until I heard this album in its entirety Yes, it leans a little more in the commercial direction, but there's still plenty of heavy here. My #8 pick is an album released on June 16, 2017 and recorded in 2015-2017 at Blackbird Studios, The Shop, 6 Studio Amontillado, Nashville, Tennessee and produced by Will Evankovich im talking about the sixteenth studio album by American rock band Styx, The Mission It is the band's first studio album since 2005's Big Bang Theory and their first release of original material since 2003's Cyclorama. The album reached #45 on the Billboard 200, propelled by pre-sales prior to its official release date, but fell off the chart after 2 weeks. In an era with limited album sales, total U.S. Sales were approximately 15,000 copies, a far cry from the band's triple platinum past. Yet, the album did briefly reach the Top 100 in four other countries. The concept album tells the story of a mission to the planet Mars in the year 2033.Styx announced the album in conjunction with the release of the lead single "Gone Gone Gone," while "Radio Silence" and "Hundred Million Miles from Home" were later made available prior to the album's release. Charts Canadian Albums (Billboard)[4] 56 German Albums (Offizielle Top 100)[5] 49 Scottish Albums (OCC)[6] 98 Swiss Albums (Schweizer Hitparade)[7] 34 UK Rock & Metal Albums (OCC)[8] 10 US Billboard 200[9] 45 US Top Rock Albums (Billboard)[10] 9 US Top Tastemaker Albums (Billboard)[11] 22

Megadeth-The Sick, The Dying... and the Dead!! (2022) Sixteenth studio album from the thrash legends. After two abysmal dumpster fire releases with Super Collider and Dystopia, COVID hit, which stalled the recording process. On top of that, bassist David Ellefson was FIRED following a lewd video being leaked of himself, so the bass parts had to be re-recorded and James LoMenzo rejoined the band for shows and is now a permanent member. Sadly, this would also be the last album with Kiko Loureiro on guitar as he left the band last year.

Great Pete pick, been there, done that as they say! Wow Tony Levin sightings over there, how cool! This was a huge one for me! Underrated - The Sheltering Sky with Fripp on the MIles Davis lead guitar, what tone from heaven!! Great long discussion Pete and glad you mentioned the new 'Beat' band - I'm SO looking forward to seeing them! Californication - Red Hot Chilly Peppers (1999) I felt I needed to throw in a vote for this one. Californication marked the return of guitar favorite John Frusciante who had quit the Peppers mid-tour in 1992. Their only other record that approached this one for popularity, or such consistent quality to my mind, was Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991) which also was the last one to feature John! Anthony Kiedis, John Frusciante, Flea, and Chad Smith - what a great band! My favorite tracks are Around the World, Scar Tissue with great line 'with the birds I'll share this lonely view' and sweet slide guitar from John, the title track Californication - I do love all the 'ation' rhyming, both smart and grooving with exceptional drumming from Chad; this song is also beautiful in its simple minimalist arrangement! I also enjoy Porcelain, what a lovely slow track! I Like Dirt is a wonderful fast funk short track and shows what these guys do concisely! This Velvet Glove is a nice acoustic guitar track with a proggy vibe, until the bridge (not Under the Bridge lol!) which lights up with psychedelic art rock and electric guitar nicely! Purple Stain a wonderful tribal funk track with the lovely heartwarming line 'got a John Frusciante' LOL that fits right in with Kiedis' rhyming with deep Parliament-Funkadelic vibe and the inspired playing found all over this album! Final track the acoustic fingerpicked Road Trippin' a fun folky track with song title topic brilliantly examined and wonderful use of a string section surprisingly and tastefully! Great youth punk psychedelic vibe on this record but this can be said about a bunch of their material! Cheers! Day 7: The Symbol Remains - Blue Oyster Cult Day 6: Ragged Glory - Neil Young Day 5: The Next Day - David Bowie Day 4: Discipline - King Crimson Day 3: Cloud 9 - George Harrison Day 2: 90125 - Yes Day 1: Seven Turns - The Allman Brothers

My Pick for Day #8 and MY #23 is DEVO - Something For Everyone Here is a band not mentioned on SOT!!! lol! I love DEVO! I saw them perform Uncontrollable Urge live on the late night TV show Fridays and became an instant fan! And they became MTV staples with the video for Whip It and Through Being Cool, then going on hiatus in 1990. Devo main man Mark Mothersbaugh went on doing TV and movie soundtracks and in 2010 decided to reunite the band and put out Something For Everyone which sees the band return to their classic new wave roots. My favorite songs are the first singe What We Do (crazy video too!), Fresh, Please Baby Please and Human Rocket. Fantastic comeback record IMO!

8. AC/DC - The Razors Edge (1990) I know that Flick of the Switch (1983) is a favorite of Martin Popoff's, known for his inexplicable tastes, but it did nothing for me. In terms of following up Back in Black, For Those About the Rock (1981) is about as good as one could expect. AC/DC had a pretty basic formula that's deceptively simple, difficult for other bands to duplicate, and apparently very easy to F up with 80s production. I got Fly on the Wall (1985) from a dollar bargain bin not long after it's release, and it wasn't even worth that. Blow Up Your Video (1988) was marginally better. Really the best follow-up to BiB was The Cult's Electric (1987). At that point most realized AC/DC would never reach the heights they did in the beginning, but "Thunderstruck" was a triumphant reminder of what they were once capable of. The rest of the album is pretty solid, with at least half the tracks being memorable. 1. Elvis Presley - From Elvis in Memphis (1969) 2. Muddy Waters - Electric Mud (1968) 3. Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band - Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) (1978) 4. Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell (1980) 5. King Crimson - Discipline (1981) 6. Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man (1988) 7. Roy Orbison - Mystery Girl (1989)

Day 8 and into AOR zone today. The BABYS, I'll Have Some of That. First album in 34 years since On The Edge and even though John Waite was not involved, I did read in Classic Rock AOR magazine that he had given Wally Stocker and Tony Brock his blessing to reform the band with a new singer. John Bisaha was to be that new singer. I had certainly never heard of the guy before, but he has a voice similar enough to John Waite to keep enough of the band's former identity without being purely a copy, similar tone and phrasing. 12 new songs though unfortunately not including the single at the time, the typical big Ballad, Not Ready To Say Goodbye, which was very much in the vain of Isn't It Time and Everytime I Think Of You. To my ears the songs here hark back to the earlier albums with Michael Corby rather than the two Jonathan Cain and Ricky Phillips albums. Every side of You is a great opener, classic energetic riffy Babys pop rock. From then on irs a mixture of rockers like the swaggering Sunrise and Goodbyes with its Custard Pie inspired riff, the Free like pair of Grass is Greener and These Days with Kossoff inspired licks from Wally Stocker, the funky Stones like It's A Gas and the full on riff rock of the title track with ballads like the country tinged All I Wanna Do, I See You There and Uncivil War. Of course there will be plenty who will say it's not The Babys without John Waite, but there's enough similarity here to the band's previous work to justify this as a reunion IMHO.

Krokus .... Hoodoo (2010) Krokus has released four fine albums in this new century. Hoodoo, the third 21st century album, is the official comeback because it is the best-selling and the best of the four. Their nineties albums are their nadir of the catalog. Round 13 from 1999 finds them without their singer Marc Storace and everyone else except for guitarist Fernando von Arb, only their native Switzerland cared. But with 2003's Rock the Block, they got back in form. In 2006, Hellraiser nudged the American Top 200 barely at... 200. Hoodoo sees the return of much of the classic lineup. Also, Platinum sales in Switzerland and healthy sales around Europe. Personally, I think Hoodoo is their second best album, period, behind their iconic One Vice At A Time album from the eighties. The other three 21st-century albums are coming right behind Hoodoo. Get ready for December and your favorite 2024 picks... Zakk Sabbath... Doomed Forever Forever Doomed Yeah, it is Zakk Wylde recording the Black Sabbath albums Paranoid and Master Of Reality with modern 21st-century sound. Zakk imitates Ozzy vocally so well I will catch myself thinking that Ozzy snuck into the vocal booth. The digi-pak is a pain where you have to touch the edge of the playing surface to pull out the two CDs. But I'm a sucker for tribute albums. I really like this. I appreciate the modern sound and Zakk's slightly different approach to the iconic songs.

Hi everyone, normality resumes sadly, back to work, holidays over... but after my short break, a US band who took a huge one... Back in 1980, in a field-cum-motor racing circuit in Derbyshire, the first ever one day Monsters Of Rock festival (now the 3 day Download festival) took place, and, promoting their stiil-stunning-to-this-day debut album, the first ever band to play this iconic event took to the boards. That band was American pomp Rock gods... TOUCH. Their second album would not be released for another... 41 YEARS!! Album #2 was to be the ironically named "Tomorrow Never Comes" (Escape Musuc, 2021) which, amazingly, not only managed to be a more than worthy successor to that long distant debut, but even featured the original line up of the band, namely Mark Mangold on keyboards and vocals (later of DRIVE SHE SAID, THE SIGN et al), Doug Howard on bass and vocals, Craig Brooks on guitars and vocals and Glenn Kithcart on drums and vocals. Thanks to Atelier Wolfhoek for reminding me of this one as I nearly forgot it and yes, AW, I stand corrected, it is (almost!) as good as the debut. Also, it should be noted that the band did record a second album back in 1982 but it was shelved. It was released in 1998, but only as a part of the 2CD Complete Works package, along with the debut and bonus tracks, and never as an official album in its own right... All that, and I didn't even mention bassist Doug Howard having to go to hospital after that Monsters Of Rock gig having nearly swallowed - and been stung by - a bee as he sipped a beer and suffering a potentially dangerous reaction!

Deep Purple-Now What!?. This was released in 2013. Deep Purple hadn't released an album since 2005's Bananas. That's eight years without an album. The lineup is the same as on the previous two albums: vocalist Ian Gillan(Big Ian), drummer Ian Paice(Little Ian), bassist Roger Glover, guitarist Steve Morse, and keyboardist Don Airey. I was so ecstatic when i heard that Purple was hooking up with producer Bob Ezrin. I remember watching a VH1 documentary called Metal: A Headbanger's Journey from 2005. They had Bob on there talking about the relationship between classical music and Metal. Then, i heard something talking about classical music and Deep Purple. So, i conflated that as Bob Ezrin talking about Deep Purple and classical music. So, i figured that Bob was the right man for the job. I was right. This started a winning streak from here to Whoosh. Even though guitarist Steve Morse has left the band, i hope that the streak continues with the next album. It's important to note that original Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord died during the creation of this album. So, Uncommon Man and Above And Beyond were written as a tribute. There is a tribute within Uncommon Man. A bit of Aaron Copeland's Fanfare For The Common Man was incorporated. That was one of Jon's favorites. Above And Beyond sounds like a waltz to me. I like that A Simple Somg includes a Mellotron flute. Weirdistan includes a synth solo that's just weird. Hell To Play is driven by tambourine. Out Of Hand has an orchestral intro. That song is quite lumbering. Bodyline is quite a funky tune, reminding me of something from the Coverdale/Hughes era. Blood From A Stone is a bluesy with some great electric piano by Don. Apres Vous has great interplay by Don and Steve. Vincent Price lives up to its names. The intro is gothic. Regarding Pete's pick, it's interesting that, since Fripp was unable to tour with Bowie after playing on Heroes, he chose Adrian Belew. Adrian also played on 1979's Lodger.

Seen Robert Fripp three times, and actually ran into him, literally, at a show where we were both walking around between sets. That was at a California Guitar Trio show. I did get to see Fripp and Tony Levin at a real King Crimson show in 2017, when they had three drummers up front and the rest of the band on risers in the back, a very interesting setup. And a total musical overload coming off of the stage, amazing stuff.

Pete misrepresented the origins of this album… are we all supposed to just ignore the fact that this was never meant to be a King Crimson album; that Fripp was assembling a new band called Discipline, and at some later point it was decided to revive the King Crimson name for this group that sounded exactly nothing like any prior group under that name?

Day 8: still on the staid, conservative road, for a couple of more days. Criteria- returning member, or members and a vast improvement on recent output. Iron Maiden- Brave New World. Returning members who are also important songwriters, so a return to form, a stronger bunch of songs. And while this is a similar length to the next 3 albums, there is less sense of widdling and meandering or making songs longer for the sake of length rather than compositional requirement (even though the next two albums do have many great songs)

I've never been a great prog fan and this reminds me why. The only track that has any kind of cohesiveness was Matte Kudasai. I'm afraid that for me, I think that elephants might put out something more worthwhile of a listen than this. It feels like talented musicians that are competent at playing their instruments but don't know how to string the right things together to make a song. Comes across as more regressive than progressive.

m b v by My Bloody Valentine (2013) Shoegaze is a genre that emerged in the late 1980s in the United Kingdom, characterized by its ethereal mixture of obscured vocals and wall-of-sound guitar distortion, creating a dense and immersive sound. This genre, so named because its players so often gaze downward at their effects pedals, was co-pioneered by My Bloody Valentine and their enigmatic leader, Kevin Shields. Released in 2013 to universal acclaim, m b v is the long-awaited follow-up to Loveless, their classic 1991 record. The album, the band's first release of original material in over two decades, showcases their characteristic and singular fusion of nearly deafening, hyper-layered guitar wizardry and otherworldly, melancholy vocals. Choice cuts: “she found now,” “only tomorrow” Previous selections - Against by Sepultura (1998) Astronomica by Crimson Glory (1999) Cloud Nine by George Harrison (1987) Forever Black by Cirith Ungol (2020) The Makarrata Project by Midnight Oil (2020) Rainbow Ends by Emitt Rhodes (2016) Third by Portishead (2008)
