The voice of experience is always the best teacher. Use it up, wear it out, make do, or do without. Too bad things now are made so shabby.

In 1943, my mother was a teenager visiting her grandparents farm in Keokuk, Iowa. One afternoon, while the men were working in the fields threshing wheat using a giant steam-powered machine, my great grandmother Ester asked my mother if she would like to take an airplane ride. My great grandmother told my mother she had always wanted to take a ride in an airplane. She had saved up some money by selling eggs, so away they both went to a local air field. Together, they flew above the fields where the men were working. Later that evening at dinner my great grandfather Chester was asked about his work in the fields that day. He said "it was fine except for that airplane that kept buzzing around us!" My great-grandmother looked at my mother, gave her a wink and said nothing.

Thanks for sharing. When I was much younger I asked my grandmother to tell me about growing up in the Depression. She said out of all her grandchildren, I was the only one who asked about it. Boy am I glad that I spent hour after hour listening to her as I was growing up. Now that she is gone, I can share what I remember with my children. Great video.

I am afraid people were more civilized then. People grew victory gardens, rationed their food and pulled together. Today when disaster strikes there is lootings and rioting in the streets. People today have more of a 'give me' attitude than a 'help ourselves' attitude. Very scary to think what will happen if shtf.

Her lifestyle still seemed relatively easy during the depression. My parents who were born in 1916 and 1919 and were raised on small farms in southern canada spoke of having $5 to get them through the winter. In order to purchase their school supplies, they caught gophers for their tails and turned those over for a penny. Christmas gifts were made versus purchased.

My grandmother was born in 1903 and she would tell a story about boiling hot cocoa in the lightshade of their college domatory back in the day. If the wanted chicken they'd have to kill one . If they needed soap they'd make it. Family was the most important. I once asked her at 96 what the meaning of life was. She said 'having fun' which at the time I didn't think was very deep but then I realized that having fun was hard to come by especially during WW1 and WW2.

I was raised on a chicken farm in 80’s and we always butchered our chickens. Don’t think we ever bought any chicken. My mom would chop off the heads and then us girls would dip them in hot water after they stopped jumping around in the yard! And we butchered them in the house 😂

I was born 30 yrs after the Depression and raised with most of those practices. I still clean glass with crumpled newspaper & vinegar. I also think it's fun to see how many years I can go without buying gift wrap

My kids make fun of me I save the tissue paper, bows n wrapping paper. Last year at Christmas I was surprised to see them taking off the bows and throwing them on the table, folding up the tissue paper n there was a pile in the middle of the living room of the wrapping paper. And not one remark of me using last year's bows, tissue and paper. Guess they now see the value of not buying these items to just throw away.

Syrup recipe. 2 cups sugar 1 cup water. Then boil and add flavoring to taste. I prefer vanilla but you can buy maple flavoring g as well as others. My kids loved it. My husband said it did not make his stomachs hurt like store bought. I am a diabetic, I have some ideas on a sugar free one that I am going to try. There are also other recipes like this if a person is willing to search.

My father was born in 1929 in Hollis Oklahoma. He said he grew up on black-eyed peas and cornbread. His grandmother owned a farm and he said that is why he did not starve. He worked on the farm on the weekends. My grandfather was a WW1 war vet. On my father's last year of school, his father took the family to Amarillo and lived in a trailer so that my grandfather could be closer to the VA hospital. His lungs were ruined by mustard gas and smoking. One week after his 17th birthday my father joined the Navy and made a 26 year career there rising in rank to Lieutenant Commander. My father attended school with returning soldiers from WW2. Many quit school to join the war. My father joined before the formal end of hostilities was declared so he was a WW2 veteran. He was also a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. Life was hard on him growing up, but it helped to build his character. He was a good provider and worked very hard. In the service, he took correspondence courses while out at sea and was knowledgeable on many subjects. Dad was given hugh responsibilities in the US Navy and was a Mustand - someone who started as a Seaman and became an officer. He was a line officer and commanded much respect. I was the first in my family to get a college degree.

Why not stay with parents for 122 years and pay rent to parents in a multi-generational home to save more than $1 million of mortgage interests and investment opportunity costs per generation so your parents and eventually yourself when you are old will have funds to pay the doctors for medical bills and surgeries to extend your life by a year to see your grandchildren? Why not pay your children or grandchildren a monthly salary, so they let you stay with them and nurse you until you pass away?
