The Great Escape - how the Island Star (le Bateau Mouche II) broke the Causeway Blockade 4K

After an incident closed the La Salle Causeway to all larger marine traffic on March 30th - three tour boats were stuck in Kingston Marina, unable to start the tourist season. Thoughts turned to ways to escape. One vessel, the Island Star, it was reasoned, could, with the removal of superstructure, be ballasted down to a height that would clear the east bridge. Research proved this to be the case and work began. On May 23rd, shortly after dawn, she moved under tow across the river and approached the bridge. Everything went well and within an hour she was safely berthed at Crawford Wharf, south of the Causeway, with full access to Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence River. This short video is dedicated to the folk at Kingston's 1000 Islands Cruises who made this happen and to their supporting crews from Kingsdive.

Well done, the manoeuvres reminded me of pulling a LCV (two trailers being pulled) on the highways when suddenly you are required to cross over the high to go in the opposite direction because of an accident. You take as much "Real Estate" as possible to make the turn.

I think that’s a pretty good comparison. In both cases you have to avoid sudden corrections

Thanks Gary - shame I tracked the actual transit perfectly without hitting ‘record’ - nobody’s perfect LOL

Thank you - imagine how much better it would have been if I’d hit ‘record’ when I was tracking the actual bridge transit !

Nice to see that Kingston 1000 Islands Cruises will have most of their business salvaged. Too bad the Island Bell will have to wait for the causeway to be situated. Same with St Lawrence Cruise Line and their vessel.

Yes - it’s a difficult situation for all concerned. Add in the fact that the dry dock cannot be reached by those requiring mandatory inspection and it’s all really unfortunate.

Alot of work to get it to go under the bridge Just like all the work went into to free the ship in Baltimore Great job to all To bad the ship that goes up to Ottawa can't make it I seen pictures it was in Kingston in the last week I thought they would have have bumpers on the sides just in case it drifted to either side

Ron - yes, indeed - there were fenders out - but there was little that could protect the whole length, besides expert work by the two 'tugs'. The whole situation is really difficult, but a lot of work is going into finding a solution

What an absolutely incredible journey. Shame it was needed to be done that way - but VERY impressive!

There are some very capable mariners on those three vessels.

I wanted to see it actually go under the bridge. Such a good video but they didn't show the cool part.

@@Aerosnapper You are doing such a great job, I love your videos. I am always like what are they doing there what is going up here and I can usually find it on your channel. I love living in Kingston and being able to see what is going on. Your 3rd crossing updates were amazing.

It'll be a shame if they did all this work and find out that they could have made it through late next week. I don't know when the demolishing of the Causeway will be done, but the news is official now: The Causeway is doomed. :( From the sounds of it, the damage is well beyond just the one beam.

Yes, desperately sad on all levels. It seems likely that this boating season, for larger vessels anyway, is going to be lost.

@@Aerosnapper It's why I've suggested to Mark that they hire Mammoet to lift the bridge in one piece and put it on a barge, to minimize downtime and to expedite replacement or repair. Since they are already on site for the counterweight, they could detach the counterweight and remove the rest of the bridge with little hassle nor environmental impact. I think this is the best approach - and this wouldn't be the first time they've moved bridges on barges either.

@@TheEDFLegacy Anything they can do to speed up the process! Kingston is going to lose A LOT of money on lack of tourism this year. Not good!
