In 1845 Famine hit Ireland and we would lose 25% of our population due to it, the population still hasn't recovered to this day and this reflects the huge scar that this tragic event dug on the Irish people. Even though we were an integral part of the biggest and most powerful empire at that time, Ireland suffered hugely during the years 1845-52. In this video I will explore the reasons for this devastation and look at what caused the Irish people to be so unprepared for disaster.

From what I've read, it wasn't a real famine; the only crop that failed was potatoes. Plenty of other foods were being grown--and shipped overseas to feed English soldiers. An Gorta Mor is a better name for it; it's more accurate.
@LearnIrish

You're absolutely right, many tonnes of food such as livestock, corn and honey were exported at gunpoint by the British. That's their legacy and we have to live with the trauma of it.

@@LearnIrish why didn't the irish just eat fish during the famine?
@LearnIrish
@LearnIrish 2 года назад
Actually that's a good question and the answer reflects society at the time. A lot of the land was taken from Irish owners and given to absentee landlords so access was restricted. Catholics had limited rights in those days and many had sold their boats and nets to buy food. Most were too weak to survive days on rough seas. Some did enjoy herring and there were reports of people eating raw shellfish and seaweed.

Thank you so much for these videos. A lot of us Irish-Americans in my generation are starting to reach for our ancestral culture - we're skeptical of just using American nationalism to make identity. I am only just learning that the Irish famine, why I speak English, and why my family is in America is because of British colonialism. This knowledge is so important if the colonial age and harms are ever to end. Thank you.
@LearnIrish
@LearnIrish Год назад
It's a pleasure to be able to help you shed light on your past, you are exactly the kind of person this channel is aimed at. Ireland is ancient with a treasured and deep history and you are just as much a part of this as anyone else on the island. The British will try and whitewash their colonial past but we must never allow that to happen, our ancestors are buried under the cloak they use to try and hide their imperial crimes.

Thank you for the video. I really like this style of video, with the phrases in Irish then you speaking them. I tend to remember the phrases better because I can see them, (eyes) and also hear (ears) at the same time. Also because the sentences and phrases are already put together. For me this is a more efficient way of learning a language, and learning about a subject matter also. Breaking down the language into syntax and vocabulary are also necessary of course. Both types of vidoes are useful. Thanks again.

Thanks for the video Dane great as always . This was wonderful history lesson along with the gaeilge , .This famine touched my mothers side of the family as my three times great grandparents John Kelly and his wife Maryann Connors died in the famine they were from roscrea in Tipperary . They left behind a daughter of seventeen ( my two times great grandmother Margaret . Luckily she still had her aunt Margaret connors and Margarets husband Michael Fitzgerald this couple were emigrating to Australia having little to keep them in Ireland at the time Michael and Margaret travelled with their orphaned niece and their own five children including their own daughter Margaret both margarets went on to become my two times great grandmothers Margaret Fitzgerald went on to marry Patrick O’Brien ( from Cavan ) their daughter is my mums maternal grandmother . Margaret Kelly went on to marry Thomas Tydd and is my maternal grandfathers grandmother . Tydd however is a welsh surname but I’ve since found out that welsh people were granted land in Munster as far back as 1582 so who knows . This is why you have the surname Walsh and Branagh as the Irish needed surnames to describe this settlers . Branagh comes from the Irish word for a welsh person . very interesting ! Find Irish history fascinating and very heartbreaking at times . Best movie I’ve seen to depict this period is black 47 .

The crime of this tragedy is laid plain by the fact that Ireland was such a rich exporter of goods to England at the time, particularly in pigs, milk and butter. I will never forget the following quote, although there are certainly more ghoulish such quotes, which I reproduce verbatim from Robert Kee's The Green Flag: Volume I (1972), p.172: "A farmer with a holding of above average size on the Marquis of Conyngham's estate in 1846 declared: 'Not a bit of bread have I eaten since I was born, nor a bit of butter. We sell all the corn and the butter to give to the landlord' [for rent] 'yet I have the largest farm in the district and am as well off as any man in the county.'" P.S I'm loving your method of lacing Irish words and phrases through the video, I'm definitely memorising more words, getting a feel for idiomatic Irish and making links to the little I already know. I'm glad you haven't slowed down the repetitions too much either, I find it makes them harder to understand and loses the natural speech pattern.

But the fact it exists is heartwarming . I for one think it’s very brave of those that emigrated , when you think many were travelling alone or with the only family they still had coming halfway around the world to an unknown country , where they knew very few people or sometimes none at all and then building lives for themselves after loss that takes resilience and courage and a fortitude that’s admirable and something worth remembering .

Very true but due to the brutality of British rule they literally had no choice. When we remember these wonderful people let's not forget the horrors of imperial rule because that's where the root cause lies. We all need to remind the British of their past crimes that they would rather we forgot.
