The Great & Frustrating Career of Lil Wayne

If you were to take as little as a fleeting glance at the hip-hop world, it’d be hard to argue that anyone has had the impact of Lil Wayne. From his pioneering flow and creativity to the trends he popularised, his early adoption of autotune and artists attempting to emulate his level of output without the degree of skill, Weezy changed everything as we know it.
That said, it’s safe to say that since we entered the 2010’s, Wayne’s career has been anything but plain-sailing. And while it’s good to see a prolific MC uphold his position as a GOAT contender, the nature of Weezy’s journey has meant that sometimes, it feels as though he’s making up for lost time, lost revenue and, most alarmingly, loss of perspective. Leading to what, despite the ink drying on his place in the history books, dredges up all the underlying hang-ups that the objective Wayne fan holds.

Wayne's run in the mid 2000s has to be one of the greatest runs in music history. Every album was a classic. Every mixtape was a classic. Every verse on other peoples songs was a classic. And the amount of output was insane. Dude was dropping a new song every week.

Anyone remember when they used to talk shit about Wayne whenever people would call him a GOAT? Now he's cemented. When an interviewer asks any young artist who inspired them or who they look up to, Wayne is always at the top of the list. Pac and Biggie are legends, J and Kanye are cultural icons, but there was a period of time when musically Wayne was just in God mode. He never missed. Never had a bad feature. Then when it felt like he couldn't possibly do anything more, Young Money arrived.

I wouldn't go that far. He had long dreads during the draught series. He had dreads with Carter III. All exemplary pieces of work from Wayne. I loved Carter I/II but PERSONALLY I felt like he really grew to his lyrical potential after II came out and he became full fledged mixtape Weezy. After Carter II peaked though he was on the decline and continues to fall. I'll forever respect his career with the utmost though.
@moballardful
@moballardful 3 года назад
@@jameshamilton5947 ah do you think the opinion on CI/II came from his unpredictability with his potential? His ceiling seemed endless? The earlier Carter albums were stepping stones but I don't think 2 was his peak. It was really him finding himself artistically. He became mixtape Wayne around the C3 era and that is when he was the best rapper alive. Unparalleled work ethic and versatility. Bars unmatched. Just reached his full potential in every sense.

Lil Wayne is a hip hop legend who will always be remembered in the ranks of Biggie, Pac, Jay Z, Kanye, and a small circle of others. Love him or hate him he made a giagantic impact on hip hop that is really undercredited. He wasn't the first "lil" but he definitely put "lil" on the mainstream and with radio hits like Lollipop he helped bringing rap more into the mainstream with The Carter 3 (and the leaks and Carter 2). The Carter 3 is such a fantastic album and was experimental, ground breaking, and is a real classic. So much respect for Lil Wayne. I think he's past him prime but the mixtapes and albums and songs he already have is more than so many artists ever put out. The Dedication tapes (specifically 1-3) really propped up that Gangsta Grillz and did a lot for the early age of internet artists before soundcloud rap started to swerve in alongside RU-vid. I wouldn't know if I would call him THE GOAT but he's definitely amidst the rank of the GOATS. I remember his rise was like a hurricane. He had put in THE WORK before he blew up with Lollipop and had so much swag (yes swag, before it was lame) and confidence plus the antics and street cred. He really did seem like a sort of alien with the way he sounded and presented himself and there's so much more to say but I am grateful for his music. The Carter 2 & 3 plus Dedication 2 & 3 are projects that are the soundtrack to parts of my life with so many great memories. I remember when Carter 3 dropped alongside the leaks (La La was wayyyy better on the leaked version, totally different song) everyone was bumping A Milli and Let The Beat Build in my dorm building and across Chicago. I lost my virginity listening to Lil Wayne with a tight thicc bust down shorty and I'll never forget hearing Lollipop and busting lolllll. For real thats tmi but that's just what it is.

Wayne has reached his highest point already. After Dedication 6 Reloaded I think that was the highest point he can do. I’m not checking for new music from Wayne like that but Wayne has nothing else to prove, his legacy is already cemented. The drugs don’t help & the weird intonations in his voice doesn’t make the music the most pleasant to listen to, don’t know if it’s the voice itself, the autotune or maybe he’s tired & fatigue from rapping. People underrate how hard rapping is, your breath control & voice control has to be on point to sound good while your rapping. Ghostface Killah sounded offbeat & out of breath on Wu Tang Forever wit Logic & I don’t think Ghost does the heavy drugs Wayne does, sometimes your flow deteriorates by age. U got to stop judging Wayne on his new music & look at his body of work as a whole, this guy been rapping at a high level & spitting bars since he was 19 on those Squad Up mixtapes, it’s hard to maintain that same level as u get older. I think fans expect too much from Wayne, just appreciate his body of work as a whole. I don’t understand why fans feel Wayne got more to prove. Wayne’s new music is hit or miss but he got some gems in that New Ceilings 3 project, his stuff ain’t super bad, I think fans are too unfair to Wayne. Maybe Wayne should stop putting out music, I don’t know, I think too many people complain too much about new Wayne & not Wayne as a whole
@anthonycelestin3559

@D P I feel like Wayne can outrap & outbar anyone whether it’s Nas, Eminem, Krs One, Rakim, Kendrick, you name it. I just think he rap too much & experiment too much with his vocals, he’s on autopilot now but this mixtape shit ain’t it anymore. Funeral came & went. I don’t want Wayne to quit music but he needs to find some inspiration. Him continuing to put out some so many projects that are ok will only dilute his discography

When the social media wave took off (MySpace,FB,Twitter,IG) Wayne played the sideline.. that was his biggest mistake. He changed the game with mixtapes, we were all downloading his music (Torrent, BearShare). But smartphone began to change media and biggest artists in the world had no media presence. Additionally, many of his greatest songs are on mixtapes. Mixtape's that the younger generation doesn't even know exist. All the things he's doing now he should've done 10years ago.

@@lucajramirezb so basically what you’re suggesting is that Kanye West could be considered to have never made any hip hop music because his political views are right-leaning? That just seems a little outlandish to me. In my opinion, the music makes the genre, not the other way around. You can make a techno song about tractors and beer or a rock song about pussy and drugs - the sound of the song is what determines its genre not the content.

Am I the only one who remembers when Lil Wayne was hated by hip-hop lovers everywhere on the internet in 2010/2011?? I remember memes with a picture of 2Pac saying "if I was alive Lil Wayne would be working at Mcdonalds" .. or a meme that pictured Lil Wayne finishing a song that only said the n-word. And Hopsin dissing him in Sag my Pants.. And now people perceive him as a rapper who's been a goat since the early 2000s . Seriously back in the early 2010s if you were listening to Eazy e etc on RU-vid literally everyone was hating on Lil Wayne, and his autotuned , hazy flow on cheesy early trap beats. They constantly compared him to Soulja Boy and Tyga etc and claimed he was one of the fakest rappers of all times. Am I the only who remembers people saying this stuff or was I listening to too much old school hip hop at the time? I've grown to like Lil Wayne over the time but damn this guy was hated by the old school 10 years ago..
