Out of the many people that attended gatsbys partys, not a single one of them went to his funeral or even offered a flower. Just comes to show out of the many people we call "friends" only the real ones end up showing in the most difficult of times. ),:

Gatsby reaching for the Green Light is probably the most famous representation in all of literature of human longing for something that we cannot have, but the important thing is the striving, the reaching for something, having the ambition to achieve, a great American value. We all have something that we are longing for that we cannot or will not have. This is one one of the reasons why The Great Gatsby is THE Great American novel.

Excellent point. F. Scott Fitzgerald also wrote a story called "Winter Dreams," which is similar to the Great Gatsby in terms of its themes and symbols. I'd strongly recommend that everyone read it.

@jonathanswift468
@jonathanswift468 3 года назад
I think it's related to the fact that it was the past what he was pursuing. There is a line in the movie from Nick: "You can´t repeat the past". Gatsby was trying to achieve something it was already behind him, the past years, those we miss, those that are never coming back. There is a quote from Mary Ann Evans, aka George Eliot, the author of Middlemarch, it says: "a man’s past is not simply a dead history, an outworn preparation of the present. It is not a repented error shaken loose from the life: it is a still quivering part of himself, bringing shudders and bitter flavors and the tinglings of a merited shame (...) like when we look through the window of a lighted room and the objects to which we turn our backs are reflected before us, instead of seeing the grass and trees". I like your perspective as well.
@pinelopiliraki3660
@pinelopiliraki3660 3 года назад
@@jonathanswift468 Yeah, your interpretation is more plausible for the book. It's just that in this particular movie that when Nick stops talking about the green light it cuts back to him. And...well,it's true that Nick was Gatsby's only true friend.

If I remember correctly, Fitzgerald died believing that The Great Gatsby had been a failure, correct? If I am right, then I appreciate the green light as Nick writes the title. It is a bit ironic because the green light represents the desire to reach the unreachable. In Fitzgerald's head, I'm sure he thought The Great Gatsby would not get any success, but he did.
@gamerdude10101
@gamerdude10101 4 года назад
I heard that Fitzgerald thought this would have been his best work of art and believed he really outdid himself once he wrote it. I also believe that he was disappointed when the novel did not do so well after it was published. It wasn't until after Fitzgerald's death that The Great Gatsby really got any major attention. This is what My English teacher told us anyways.

Not at all. Nick is clearly disingenuous about his actions after Gatsby's death...and he KNOWS the truth about the murder of Gatsby and does nothing about it. When Myrtle is being mourned by her husband...Nick says nothing to the police officer who is standing right there. He does nothing to stop Tom from influencing the husband. THIS is one of the great truths that most people miss in the book. Nick is an unreliable narrator, and is reproachful of himself for being just as much a failed friend as he accuses Daisy and Tom of being.

@@mishelleilieva9657 , I felt the opposite about the book. The Great Gatsby was the first time I was struck by the ability of mere words to convey emotions and environment so well. The heat of the hotel room where they fight was so well described...and the way that Fitzgerald could convey each character so well without wasting time. But this is the amazing thing about art...each person, on viewing it, brings their own self to the action...and therefore the value of the art to entertain is up to the audience as well. Do not feel unhappy that the book didn't make you feel but the movie did. That is ok.

Hello, how are you all? If you need someone to listen, someone to talk to, or a friend. I am here to talk, listen, and be a friend. I hope you are safe and well. I am very sorry for anything that seems bad that may have happened in your life. Know that you are amazing and have rights as a human. I want you to know that you are incredible and are capable of wonders. What matters is your inside, not your exterior. Love yourself and cherish yourself. Words cannot explain how astonishing you are. You deserve care, love, and happiness, don't let anything make you feel otherwise. You may or you may not think that you are a failure but you are not, we are humans and we are bound to make mistakes so failures will come but that will give you the prize of what you have learned. Even if it may be a very small prize, it is very significant and important because you are amazing and deserving to learn and grow just as everyone else is. Please have appropriate action for anything that you know is wrong. Try and find professional or trusted help. Anything that seems bad or wrong in your life right now will get better. Please don't do what is wrong, fighting back and harming others will not solve the problem. Please understand that and do the good thing. It will one day come back to you. The people in the world are so much more than what we know about them, not everyone opens up about the beautiful things and acts they have witnessed, not all those amazing doings are acknowledged. There is more to people than it seems. Please understand that and know that. If you feel like no one cares about you, know that I care about you. Keep your head up high and never give up. Together, we can be a better community. Stay safe, healthy, happy, kind, understanding, positive and strong. Have a great day.

So you're just going to disrespect Dostoyevksy, the man in your profile picture? The Great Gatsby is a very creatively made and well written book but it isn't anywhere near the best in my humble opinion.

In my movie universe, Nick Carraway is relating all of this to his granddaughter as an old man still living in NYC and his granddaughter grows up to be Spider Man’s mother.

Gatsby loved the wrong, wicked woman all along. Had he realised which kind of person Daisy was, had he listened to Nick that night, he surely wont be waiting for Daisy anymore and live his life to the fullest.

The beauty of this story is that Scott F. Fitzgerald learned the true cruelty of Gatsby’s life himself after his commercial success as a writer. A life that drove his wife to increasing decadence, and himself to an early grave.

I like The Great Gatsby re-read the book many times to appreciate it. I feel Tender is the Night could be also great, but kinda confusing, he wrote while drunk and delusional I think, maybe that is a good thing.

I fell in Love once, his name was Toby C. M. He passed away in an accident in the year 2000 I know the feeling of that green light, it’s like letting go of all of the things of this world to reach towards what you have always needed the most.

Not ever having watched the film or read the novel, I assumed from the title of this video that Maguire's character was going to get killed because someone did not pay attention to the traffic lights.

Ok, so I enjoy this movie, and Tobey Maguire was a great Nick, but does it bother anyone else that he wrote two completely different variations of "T" and "E" in "The Great" at the end of the clip?
