If one could just go back in time, sit on a hill and just watch. These writing's and stories of the Norse are just amazing. No other channel on RU-vid tells these stories as well as this one..
Nice half an hour went by and even though i know about the viking conquests of old england i still enjoyed sitting through your documentary, truly well done presentation
It's so crazy to think that had the sons stayed together and kept their armies united, England's history as we know it would be VERY different, or should i say Danelaw's history.
"How the little piggies will grunt, when they hear the old boar is dead. " So great was Ragnar that Odin himself became the messenger of his death to his sons.💥
A great video and breakdown hearing the full history of The Great Heathen Army was a real treat and it was very easy to see why it was a big part of not only the Vikings tv series but Viking history as a whole and why they are looked at as a fearsome culture, because truly they changed the world.
Thank you so much! I think I’m going to start doing more documentary style videos, but the tale of the great heathen army is by far one of my favourites. Thank you so much for watching
@@historyprofileshey, bro I watch all your videos I love your documentary style. Could you please do a history profile video on Osman GAZI the founder of the Ottoman Empire. A real warrior
@@historyprofiles - I love your documentary videos they are so informative and interesting. I love the viking Era. Ragnar Lothbrok is my favorite viking. The great heathen army was awesome 👌. Love your videos 📹. Keep up the good work 👍!!
It takes a strong, magnificent man and his strong, magnificent family, and their courage to explore the unexplored, be honourable and truthful and be faithful, to unite a people. Unfortunately for the brittanians, ragnar was such a man, and martyring him with such a torturous, long death sealed their defeat.
I still believe if Ivar fought Alfred the outcome would have been different. I do think that it made England a better country and a force in the future because of these wars. Remember, it's almost always easier to defend a land when it's your home than to invade and conquer. The only reason 1066 went to the Norman's which ironically where mostly of Viking blood is because the Norwegians softened them up.
Awesome. I still have doubts Ivar and Imar were the same person. I do believe Ivar died earlier and was buried at Repton, this prompting the split between Halfdan and Guthrum. Besides, if you look at Imar's family tree, the bothers have other names and he isn’t Ragnar's son… provided Ragnar existed in the first place, which is still rather unlikely, at least not as we know him.
Thanks for this summary of the Viking invasion and the beginning of the English nation by Alfred. Today the king Charles the 3rd was crowned at Wesmister abbey but few know how hard it was to consolidate the English nation .
Ollie, You Failed to Give Credit to Uhtred of Bebbanburg. He Helped King Alfred Escape Into the Marshes and Later Counselled Him on How to Defeat the Remaining Vikings. Odda the Elder Did Win an Important Victory for King Alfred But Only After Uhtred Killed Ubba In Battle.
Here's the best way to understand Vikings, The Last Kingdom and Vikings Valhalla.., 95 % of the characters are real. Some are completely made up ...95% of the real characters only did 10% of what is shown on TV. A lot of things that did happen in the shows, happened to different characters at different times. Ragnar had like 11 sons or something crazy like that. He was the son of a King, Bjorn was actually 2nd or more son of Aslug , Rollo wasn't even alive in the same century and no relation, etc.
Could you imagine the great stories that could have been told about the wars between the Vikings and PreColumbian, indigenous natives of the western hemisphere?!
For those interested in football. England have once again been conquered by a heathen named Erling Haaland. After the Irishman Roy Keane slaughtered his father, he has returned and conquered all.
Id very possible it was 4000, remember unlike hollywood the End of empires ment the fall of giant armys.. (to costly) so most small kingdoms probably only had litterly 100-500 soldiers at max and usually they were "call up" men and not "standing men" so 4000 would be a massive army for the early middle ages.
The problem with the english was they were soft. Alfred gets invaded and goes thru the hardest time because of guthrum, then after getting his throne back let him be king of east anglia.
In every realm timeline and dimension Satan outranks you. In every realm timeline and dimension the ten commandments don't move just because you want them to. What happens when you break the ten commandments? Karma shows up and kicks in your door.
@@historyprofiles please believe me I have not missed a single one. Your work is flawless and I can tell you take so much time and effort into every video. Truly I thank you. God bless you 🙏🙏🙏
You are so good at what you do but you need to get the most famous Viking’s name right it was Ragnar lothbrok according to the saga’s dont insult the Norse way of life by at least getting his name right. Other than that great video
How would the great heathen army have faired against a Roman army? I believe Rome would take high casualties but still hold the field at the end of day.
I honestly have no idea, I can speculate that the vikings may have had better weapons due to the advancement in forging, smelting and smithing but when it comes to battle it really depends on the leaders and what formation/ tactic there going to decide on. Due to the fact that vikings would have had steel/iron swords and axes and berserkers and ulfhednar I would go for them. However it’s all speculation!
They would have got in "nice terms" gaped... and thats being nice.. Rome was a very well trained standing army, + they had the numbers 4000 was childs play for the romans they could call up (depending what time periods) easy 15- 25k troops. So it would have been in nice term a massicer. Remember unlike hollywood the End of empires ment the fall of giant armys.. (to costly) so most small kingdoms probably only had litterly 100-500 soldiers at max and usually they were "call up" men and not "standing men" so 4000 would be a massive army for the early middle ages.
The invaders the Saxons became the invaded , just as the indigenous peoples of Britain rid themselves of the Romans not long after the Saxons invaded then themselves were invaded
Such big strong powerful men until the fates summon them with the book of creation and the cord between vessel and spirit and the fates scissors against their cord is drawn. Big strong powerful men weeping no fates don't sever the cord between my vessel and spirit and God and erase me from the book of creation and Arch Angel Metatron please i promise I'll make the kingdom look good and make amends with everyone I have wronged with interest because I know I'll go into the book of creation as not a big strong powerful man but as a ninny.
WALES BEAT THE VIKINGS KEPT YOU OUT OF WALES AND THE ENGLISH SAXONS the Romans come in so far but went .WALES. My country. 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
Are you kidding me? This has nothing to do with the tv show. The information is all from the ancient chronicles and sagas in the description. You go do your homework
You tell the story how it was but you have shown the Saxons as white Anglos when the fact was they were light skin, swarthy ,tawney & black hebrews read the Torah and you will see what's been hidden from us .Ireland britini has always been important to Jews 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Every day I train in hopes of obtaining a fraction of the strength these people had. Long road to go but these heros and your videos continue to help inspire .
Hi Ollie! I wanted you to know that i won't be able to listen your next video. I go for two surgeries. Will be back in June. I'll listen and relisten to your uploads that i would miss. Thank you for everything. Take care
Thank you - brilliantly thorough account of Alfred's tireless, almost unbelievable struggle against the Vikings ... I only regret the Norman victory of 1066 ... ❤
Im guessing these battles created so much chaos around, and looting, and that's where all these viking hoardes come from that's found buried all over England

Such a shame that his end came in a pit of snakes. I dont believe that would qualify you for Valhalla. Also I didn't even know England had snakes lol. My family name is from Northumbria and I do have a good bit of Scandinavian in my mix.
Yeah it’s a shame he had to die that way, I don’t think England did but a King could easily have imported wild beasts they had the coin, thank you so much for watching! I hope you enjoyed
From what I've researched, if someone had been killed in an unjust or cowardly way, the next of kin are allowed to seek vengeance upon the interloper and only then will the person in question (Ragnar) be allowed into Valhalla.
I would love to see profiles on RagnarLothbroks great grandfather Ivar Vidfamne and then Ragnars father Sigurd Ring leading up to the Battle of Bravellir. Ivar ruled more or less over England, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and russia already in the 7th century. He died in the year 700 in Finland. All according to saga legend of course but who knows? Great stories in any case
400 longships would mean 40.000 men, not 4000. Those things can carry about 100 people. I havent really read any documents about this granted, but it is hard to imagine 4000 people could conquer England.
Can someone explain to me why so much history say anglo saxons were english ....but really anglo saxons were pagans and germanic tribes ...once anglo saxons rule of 600 years died out all anglo saxons were now considered english why
They had settled in England for around 500 years at that point, identifying themselves as English aka someone that lives in England as they were born there
Just started rewatching the series and finally made it to the “great heathen army”. Watching the villagers run away, praying to god and I can’t help but make the connection that it almost feels as if it carries the same weight as the rumbling, in attack on titan.
This is very good..However we are pretty sure that whomever Ragnar was, he most definitely wasn't killed in a snake pit. I know your just retelling certain sources,, but I feel you should offer input when repeating something that is clearly myth..I say this because it's getting disturbing how much love viking history is getting., Peaople are seeing vikings as Heroes. They are confusing vikings with the Norse..Most Norseman were not Vikings...As you know Viking litterally translates as "Plunderer".. They were not honourable...They sacrificed children, enslaved whole villages, and committed genocide in Ireland...If they had taken Wessex they would have probably gone onto wipe out the Anglo saxon culture.. Norseman were the people of Scandinavia, Vikings were people of Scandinavia who were also rapists and plunderers.. Again, I love your channel,, just offering some constructive criticism. I have watched the last kingdom, and vikings..Both these shows glorified the Vikings whilst completely changing Saxon history..How they portrayed Athelstan and Edward is an abomination to our history.. so it's people like you that can keep our real history alive..
Mark thank you for your comment, when adding the disclaimer about Ragnar in the snake pit, I agree with you however I feel it it would ruin the flow of the storytelling in the video as the aim is for people to be immersed by the chapters. I have all the sources in the description and even say according to the gesta danorum etc Much in the gesta danorum is myth and a lot is real history so the lines are blurred with that particular source. When it comes to vikings as heroes, very few were I agree with you. Dublin was the capital of the slave trade in Europe during the Viking age as they sold whole tribes into slavery etc - I agree that if they took Wessex they would have wiped out the Anglo Saxon culture, however the angles and Saxons did exactly the same thing to the Britons and pushed them to living in Wales A savage world bred savage men and the easiest way to be remembered back then was being a warrior which goes hand in hand with being evil Although I try and tell this history in an interesting way it’s not my intention to glorify it, anyway I hope you enjoyed the video! And I appreciate your comment
