Yoshida Hirofumi isn't telling us the truth. In Chainsawman there are a lot of things that don't quite add up- today I want to get to the bottom of that. With csm ch 117 a lot of people theorized and today with ch 118 releasing I want to make sure my opinion gets out. Chainsaw man is an awesome manga and the anime adaptation was great imo. I hope you enjoyed this analysis / theory! Let me know your thoughts!

The thing with the octopus is that the fear of them isn't due to the animal, but due to its association with the unknown of the deep ocean. Though the Giant Squid is technically the representative of that ill-explored area of the planet, there aren't that many people that know the difference between the two, and the giant octopus seems to feature more in myth and pop culture (kraken, anyone?). So, the Octopus Devil could actually be something deeper...like literally "the Deep Devil." The creatures therein have all adapted to life without light, which would make it easier to understand why it could sense the presence of small creatures around Yoshida. Though that name might make an unintentional pun, imagining a massive monster being really just a pretentious snob seems really up Chainsaw man's alley

I always thought that Kishibe not wanting to see a thing it was because of all the history he had with Quanxi, there is also the panel of both of them facing just before the cut and the blood spilling over on him. Remember Fuyimoto likes to show more with what he draws than to tell directly his intentions with words. Kishibe doesnt really shows his feelings, we can only assume how he feels, like that time he said to Makima that everytime a dog he trains dies he finds himself drinking more. So seeing his long time partner Quanxi die in from of him would have a bigger impact. And thats why he just says he doesnt want to see a thing...
@salvadorreyes2312
@salvadorreyes2312 Год назад
I had this impression too. It was more like “I know what happened but I can’t handle seeing it” sort of thing. Kishibe isn’t dumb and probably also knew he was safe to take off the blinds
@asimian8500
@asimian8500 Год назад
Quanxi didn't die. She's a hybrid immortal Weapons Devil. We see her again in the last arc along with other Weapons Devil (including Reze and Katana Man) vs. Pochita/Chainsaw Devil. It was mentioned by Makima that the Horsemen and Weapons Devils fought Chainsaw Man and his allies in Hell. One of those Weapons Devils was the Nuclear Weapons Devil which Chainsaw Man ate and that Yoru/War Devil wants to force Chainsaw Man to release. It seems Chainsaw Man has the power to destroy and resurrect Devils (truly OP power).
@d-man247
@d-man247 Год назад
That's exactly what it was. Kishibe saying "I don't want to see a thing" is a callback to his conversation with Quanxi about ignorance being bliss; he doesn't take off his blindfold because he'd rather not see what Makima did to her nor her dead body. Yoshida takes off his blindfold simply because he doesn't care, not because he knows there's no threat.
@HidinginPublic
@HidinginPublic Год назад
I think it's both. Kishibe knows that the more you know the more likely Makima will take your control away from you. As we saw in the snake arc, makima tells the 2 masked people when it's okay to look again because they don't have the right to know what's going on.. kishibe also repeatedly tells makima he doesn't care what her means are as long as it serves humanity- that he would rather not know. All of this is in characterization with the line in ch70. I do also think the Quanxi part plays into it how you stated though
@PersonCalledErin
@PersonCalledErin Год назад
@Hiding in Public I think it was pretty solidly established that makimas literal control over people depends entirely on if the other sees themselves as below makima, which Kishibe clearly doesn't. As seen by him retaliating against makima and not being controlled directly at all. The same could also be the case for Yoshida tho
@clubberlang8050
@clubberlang8050 Год назад
I'm sure someone has probably pointed out before I have, but you misread the blindfold scene. Kishibe's reluctance to remove his blindfold had nothing to do with Makima's power, it was because he didn't want to see Quanxi (his former buddy and crush) slaughtered. Yoshida was acting normally, it was Kishibe who was acting strangely.

In the Assassins arc, Kishibe demonstrated that what devils you have a contract with does not really correlate to how powerful you can be. Kishibe only has a contract with the Needle, Knife and Claw devil, while good devils they aren't exactly the type to seem like they would give him the top tier status he seems to hold. Cosmos is following Quanxi cause she loves her, you can't really use that as a way to scale anything. Also Kishibe managed to make her retreat, so it safe to say that devil ability are like Jojo stands, where circumstances is more a deciding factor instead of pure strength. Yoshida was able to shrug off the damage cause of technique. All the damage he took were scrapes from redirecting Quanxi's attacks, so if he were to get a "direct hit" to the head or stomach it probably would shatter his bones and kill him. Kishibe doesn't want to see Quanxi's (a person he held dear) dead in front of him, its not cause of some aversion to harm. The blindfold are cause standard hunters aren't supposed to see Makima's "contracts", Yoshida knew he could take off his mask cause he heard the thud of their heads so he knew the job was done. Its also safe to assume that Yoshida got his info from the same government that Kishibe works for, so he would know about how Makima watches them, and after Kishibe relays the info about CSM's ability, Yoshida being one of the best candidates for the spy on Denji mission would also be privy to this info. And the point about the octopus devil, Octopi have no blind spot while also having vision on the same level as humans, so he would be able to check his surroundings for any rodents rather easily Occam's Razor is boring, so i'm hoping your theory is correct

I have had a very similar idea in that I think he's a Lovecraftian devil, but I don't think he's the "Cthulhu" devil, more he's Nyarlathotep. That would also account for the panel with Yuko being hung upside down by the fake Chainsaw Man in the exact same pose as Yoshida had held Denji with the octopus earlier, because Nyarlathotep is a shapeshifter and can change his appearance. Nyarlothatep also has the whole tentacle thing going on in one of his appearances, as is Lovecraftian tradition and why I first thought about it way back when I first saw the octopus (octopi aren't scary, eldritch horrors are, tentacles make me think of hent... I have a feeling his organization is, in some sense, trying to go to a sort of "war" with the 4 Horsemen. We already have Nayuta, Fami and Yoru (Control, Famine and War) and Yoshida directly mentions the Death Devil. I don't think he is the Death Devil like some people have been suggesting cause A) Makima would have probably killed him if that was the case and B) When the Hell Devil takes the group to Hell, he is seeing TERRIFIED at the sight of that happening, if he was the Death Devil I doubt he'd be scared as much as he was. I think Yoshida and Denji, despite being friends at the start of this part will def have some conflict if the War on The Horsemen idea is right, especially cause I doubt Denji would let his half-friend-half-little sister be killed that easily Also, I think it makes a lot of sense for his devil to be the Kraken Devil instead of the Octopus devil. Cause an octopus? Kinda scary, but eh. Now the Kraken, the mythical representation of the octopus? Yeah, that'd make more sense to me.
@wolfbrigade8042

Well Makima wanted to kill Death but needed Chainsaw Man's ability to do so. She just never got it so her plan never came to fruition. @confusedjay717
@confusedjay717 Год назад
I want to first point out that I personally don't believe that Yoshida is the Death Devil, and that the theory seems like a stretch to me. But Makima had no reason to wear them because no other Horsemen were known about by the public when she was still alive. (Well, the general public still doesn't know about Nayuta, Yoru and Fami's existences. Kishibe knows about Nayuta but he has never seen Yoru nor Fami.) She had no reason to hide her eyes because the ringed eyes weren't associated with the Horsemen by humans in the first place. And they still aren't. I think it's safe to say that ironically, Yoshida is the only non-Devil character in the entire series that has figured out the connection between eye rings and the Four Horsemen. He's seen Makima, Fami and presumably Yoru's eyes, so surely he's figured that out. If he IS Death though, it *would* make sense for him to hide his eyes with contact lenses because there is already an established connection between ringed eyes and the Four Horsemen. If he visibly had rings in his eyes, it would be a dead giveaway, especially for the 3 other Horsemen.

My biggest issue here is that you projected a lot of your outsider's view on this when it comes to the fear of octopus and their lore in Japanese culture. Many youkai and a lot of the gorest lore there is, culturally speaking, revolves around tentacles and the fear an octopus-like figure could evoke. Sea creatures have a different perception there than in other places. If you watch Old Boy (Korean classic), for example, the entire scene of him eating an octopus alive is BRUTAL and ultimately designed to cater to a more non-USA/EU viewership. One thing I want to say is that I think the abilities of the octopus devil are being unfairly portrayed and dulled down. Octupus are very smart, have great reach and strength, spray ink, incredible camouflage skills, and can fit through anything. There are also tales of giant octopus in folklore. Though it could very well be cuthulu or something similar, it being an octopus doesn't mean it would be weak.
@asimian8500
@asimian8500 Год назад
Yoshida may have multiple contracts. We know about the Octopus Devil which may be an Octopus Devil in name only. It has multi-dimensional powers, teleportation, and only displays tentacles. I would rather call it the "Fear of Tentacles, Cthulhu, and non-Euclidean Space" Devil. Now, going back to multiple contracts, Yoshida may have multiple contracts. Only powerful humans can have multiple contracts like Kishibe who has three contracts. We didn't see any of his contracted Devils in Part 1: Public Safety. He doesn't rely on them even against Quanxi who is a hybrid, Weapons Devil. And no Quanxi was not "killed" as she is an immortal hybrid, Weapons Devil, who we saw in the last arc along with numerous Weapons Devils vs. Pochita/Chainsaw Devil. Finally, I have the suspicion that Yoshida is Kishibe's son from a fling. Kishibe's interests are booze, women, and killing Devils (Part 1). There are many similarities including earrings, fighting ability, and personality. Physically Yoshida looks like a younger Kishibe. We know what Kishibe looked like as a young man from an extra chapter. Now, I'm not going to rely on that 100% as Fujimoto does draw similar characters--especially women. Asa looks similar to Eri and wears a similar High School uniform.

I agree with you that Yoshida is almost definitely not the Death Devil, but the idea that he's contracted with Cthulhu is a stretch imo. Fujimoto is always an unpredictable writer for sure but that seems extremely un-Fujimoto like to me. It seems like a pretty whacky thing to prescribe to such a serious character, and if he was contracted with a devil like that, characters like Justice Yuko, Yoru or the Famine Devil would've definitely taken notice of him. I have a two potential theories though; he is contracted with the Predator or Hunter devil as well as a slew of animals/creatures that are predators, or he is contracted with the Manipulation Devil. Predators and the fear of them aren't characterized by their viciousness or unreasonableness, but by their natural place on the hierarchy and their awareness, and manipulators tend to naturally be on top anyways. They both would explain why he's always smug and seems to know everything, why he seems so laid back, because everyone around him is dancing to his tune and he's waiting for the opputune moment to strike, making sure that his targets have their guards down. The Predator theory could explain his knowledge by his devil giving him all the possible information about his "Prey", and in the case of the Manipulation devil, we'd have to assume that he actually does have a secret organization that has the knowledge of Makima. Either way, I can't wait to see what he does moving forward.

I agree that cthulhu would be a very un-fujimoto like thing to do. He rarely (if ever) references foreign literature, only movies. Plus not many people are really scared of cthulhu or lovecraftian monsters, as not many people are familiar with the concept at all (normal-everyday people rarely associate with lovecraft, in my experience), so cthulhu would not be a very powerful devil either. Also I really like the predator devil theory, it makes sense

I agree there's more to Yoshida than he lets on, but what you're describing is an idea we've already seen done in CSM. Twice. The Cosmos devil and the Darkness devil are both devils of the Lovecraftian variety. I would be interested to know how Yoshida was able to go toe-to-toe with Quanxi, who Kishibe basically described as the best fighter in the world. However the answer could easily be that he's also just a very very skilled fighter.

love, LOVE this theory but I have some nitpicks Kishibe didn't keep his mask on because the information could implicate him in future harm, he kept it on because he didn't want to see a person he genuinely cared about for a very long time die. It's pretty obvious that Makima would execute the Quanxi and crew but all that's not allowed is to see her devils, once her job is done they can remove the blindfolds. Yoshida is not "above quanxi", he lost to her. And he said if he took a hit directly he'd die, but we can easily see that he glanced and blocked that hit with his arm so it wasn't direct. Maybe the argument could be made that he didnt use another devil he was contracted with or something but apart from him being a little mysterious, lying about how strong he is, and knowing too much and there is no evidence to support the fact that he'd win against her in a fight. Most devils with animals (fox and bat for example) have manifestations that are much larger than the actual animal. But the point that an octopus devil shouldn't be that powerful cause who tf is afraid of octopi, the weird amount of knowledge and influence that yoshida has I think definitely points to something odd with him. I really love the Cthulu idea but I think for some specific reasons that Yoshida might be the death devil. Remember how Makima said being eaten by chainsaw man would be a dream come true? Maybe it's similar for the death devil. IDK thp, Cthulu would be pretty awesome. I'm also a big fan of the idea that DENJI is the death devil, cause a) his power is literally erasing things from existence, killing them forever b) who the heck is afraid of chainsaws enough for denji to be as powerful as he is? c) that the death devils manifestation is a chainsaw is really cool considering the original use of chainsaws, d) it would be really interesting that the character arc of the death devil is one of life and living, the "indomitable human spirit" that denji has, an infinite will to live.

Yoshida's eyes is completely black(even in super close portrait) which really makes me curious. And Denji has also mentioned how Yoshida's eyes were weird. Also he mentions death devil at times. He really gives me Dazai vibe, what if he's the death devil? One of the 4 horseman? All 4 of them strayed apart and 3 of them (war, control and fami) has different goals to get their hands on pochita. But if Yoshida is death, and he has this sadistic or mischievous personality of trolling denji and others around by off handedly giving out hints to the point it seems like he's always joking and lying. He definitely has his own goal, probably different from the other 3 after him, it may be positive or negative or worse than them(?) It makes his character even more interesting. Nah, it goes so well with him, how it seems he has no interest in living or others lives, he doesn't blatantly say he wants to die, but it seems he's so nonchalant about it. Another theory of mine is, he really really isn't that crazy, he is what it is, octopus devil, but with critical thinking which gives him this mysterious and mischievous personality, he isn't meant to be taken too seriously, like Chuuya, author didn't think he would gain so much popularity and attention, despite being the strongest entity in the BSD universe, he has very few appearance, supposed to be a minor character, but he's literally the 2nd most famous character in the fandom after Dazai lmao Same way Arima Kishou in Tokyo Ghoul is op and plays a very small but significant, if not the craziest effect on the plot and Kaneki's life, being the 'One eyed owl' and joining Eto to create the peace among the 2 species. Same way Yoshida Hirofumi has already gained an attention and it will simply get bigger and bigger in the future, I'm pretty sure the anime watchers and the fandom will have a large amount of people who will be interested in his character. But he might not be that apparent in the plot as much as we are thinking or wishing.... Oh well, yes, either way we will end up getting trolled by Fujimoto-sensei in the end XD

I really love this theory but I think Yoshida knows Just as much as Kishibe because Kishibe has told him, in fact Kishibe states that Yoshida is stronger/has more potential than Kishibe himself. Also the organization Yoshida works for probably tells him just as much as Kishibe knows. This would make sense seeing as he knows about the 4 horseman and chainsaw mans ability to erase anything he eats. Kishibe didn't want to see Quanxi dead/die because he loved her and that is proven in a omake/side story. Yoshida also avoided major injury from Quanxi by redirecting her attacks which probably led to heavy bruises and scrapes.

This is a really cool analysis, thanks for pointing at all the flags that Yoshida brings up. My own suspicion is that he's still likely the Death Devil - not because of the name, but because of his positioning in the story. He's clearly being positioned as at least equal to the other three Horsemen (Control, Famine, War), and they've all oddly avoided touching him despite him being right there in front of them. Him asking Denji about eating the Death Devil seems more to evaluate him on whether he's the threat. I'm not sure, but... the fact we haven't seen Death and Yoshida's behaviour around the other Horsemen makes me wonder. He's either their equal (and therefore Death) or someone even more powerful (but then where is Death, and why would something more powerful appear first?) My real question though is... what the heck happened in hell that the four horsemen, described as the strongest of all the devils, are suddenly in the normal world (and Control was apparently thrown back out of hell pretty much immediately after being killed as Makima)? Especially since Chainsaw wasn't in hell at the time - it begs the question of what in hell was able to defeat all of them and throw them out into the normal world.

At that point why not introduce the Poseidon Devil, or Thor for that matter? Ehh....the novelty sounds great in theory but would really dilute the threat of anything else in scale and scoop. Like for example Kishibe's lines "I don't want to see a thing" I can't read it as anything but him not wanting to see the corpse of the woman he liked. I can't see it being about avoiding sensitive information. And my personal theory for why Yoshida knows of Pochita's ability is that Kishibe told him. They seemed to have some connection in part 1. What is your thoughts on Pochita? Why does he have the ability to eradicate the name of devils? If octopus is cuthulu in disguise do you think Pochita could be doing something similar? I think Pochita could have eaten a part of the death devil, granting him the ability to make devils actually die. Like how the doll devil got powers related to darkness after eating a peace of darkness's flesh.

Because Yoshida survived part 1 and is playing a more active role even though he acts so laid back throughout it. It’s very consistent with his character so far but because he’s got more of a presence this time around the way he’s acting now prompts suspicion. We know that Famine is an antagonist in this setting and that Yoshida and his organization are another factor in this story, but with the way things are progressing it seems like Yoshida’s organization is shaping up to be not as regular or normal compared to the devil hunting agency.
