what i heard when i was in primary, it was that the mice was the cats servant and the cat ordered the mice to wake them up when it was time for the great race, but the mice didnt wake them up and attended the great race himself, when the cat woke up to run to the great race they found out the great race has ended and all 12 animals have been placed and so thats why cats hunt mice

I also believe that the cat has granted a lucky wishes, lucky cat statues

Well, yeah, but no. The Rabbit had horns, and tricked the Dragon's ego to wear them to look more noble. Out of the rooster, the monkey and goat, the monkey threw feces at the rooster for outsmarting him on the way, which is why the Goat took 8th, Monkey 9th and Rooster 10th. When the Rat jumped off the Ox, claiming 1st place, the cat decided it was treason and killed the rat. No blood was allowed in the race, this why the Jade Emperor decided to raise the rat from the dead and disqualify the cat. With all this treachery, the Jade Emperor gave the choice to the last one arriviring, the slow, humble Pig. The Pig decided of the order, and placed himself last, humbly. But the story is much more complicated than even these few lines, the river was just the last part...
