Hi Kevin, you came to Dunraven School in South London about 10 years ago when I was 13 as Kevin the Bowman. I remember that was one of the first formative historical experiences I had as a young lad which has only turned into a deep love and passion for all things history. Then here I am today watching you on a successful RU-vid channel of your own making, funny how things work out! Keep up the great work, and thank you for being a huge inspiration to me and no doubt many others. Proud of you! Evan

This is an excellent history lesson. You remind me of a teacher I had back in 1971-72. He didn't dress in period costume, but he acted out the parts of his subjects. He was a mine of information, and it was all in his head, not read from a book.

@@thehistorysquad i have a question, how did the French sally out in force with fortifications like that (amazing model btw kevin)? did they swim across the moat or walk out the gate? seems a bit daft
@thehistorysquad
@thehistorysquad 17 дней назад
@@hallytron they had different means of sally ports, I think they would have walked out. It's possible that on the gatehouses on the English side of the river there were, down below, near river level, gates so soldiers could cross the bridge to the gate house, go down the towers to the riverbank and out that way. The conclusion I came to was that under the cover of darkness they would actually sally forth this way, gather in the town ditch and move forward under cover of darkness, avoiding traps, and attack. The fact they captured and tortured English prisoners makes me think maybe they sallied forth with the intention of probing defences but also attacking English patrols. It was a very fluid situation. Hope that helps

"I've made a model" - music to my ears! Another great video, thanks Kevin! You are such a talented story teller and manage to really colour the mental imagery - im fairly well versed on the main beats of the 100yrs war but you provide such a great perspective and don't try to sanitise the horrors and atrocities on all sides, acknowledging the realities of combat and war of the period - yes it was a different time, but they are our ancestors and its important to understand that they were generally all as bad as eachother (some were worse than others admittedly) - but these events shaped our lives and world today. Even the small detail of perfidy by the sailor who was the "wolf among dogs" - now a war crime, suppose then the closest thing to what could be called a "war crime" to them was attacking royalty, and naturally only by the recipient! you give me fond memories of my reenactment days when in my impression of a 14thC Bowman "recount my experiences" of famous battles, hopefully of a castle i was currently standing in to crowds of 20, 50, 100 people. Not to brag but ive no doubt you are familiar with the Keep of Pembroke castle?... Well, not to brag... well perhaps a little:- I could reliability hit a fellow reenactor at the very top through the top Crenellations (in appropriate protection & rubber tipped arrow of course), that and loosing a minimum of 15 arrows per minute at a static target, once loosing all 20 I had! Very fond memories you bring Kevin, thank you again as always. keep you bowstring dry!

The model work is exceptional, but the detail in the story is unparalleled. I really feel like I've gone back in time with these shows, the sights and smells. Not sure why they left a few weeks worth of food by the side of the river. You would think they could simply lower ropes and pull the food up the cliff face. Sad to hear about the starving in the moat. Those bloody French are stubborn. If they had just given up, the English would have soon buggered off to fight the Burgundians.

Wow, I can't imagine how expensive this military campaign was. The supplies, the soldiers and the replacements, the equipment, the weapons, specialized personnel, the continuation of the campaign during winter. I'm sure King Henry V would be very darn worried about money.
