Kyle misinformed eveyone when he said that the Ioniq 5 wasn't worth reccomending since it' on board route guidance software was so bad. Obviously he wasn't aware of the oct 23 update which vastly improved the software to the point where it is actually good and reliable to use. I monitor the SOC predictions and they are right on. So, I have complete confidence in their software. I don't think that Kyle ever did a review of their software after the Oct update. He's judging the original which was bad, or incomplete.

I just want to add to what I said, cause even I have the long learned habit of using Android Auto / CarPlay for nav so admittedly my experience with rhe on board nav is limited. That being said, I took a 1000 mile trip over the weekend using nothing but the on board nav and the route planning was perfectly fine. It took me to all the EA chargers I'd have used on that route anyway. The one exception was when I wanted to use a charger near my destination after having been there for a day that had just opened a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't in the nav system yet so I couldn't pre condition on the way there. They really need to add a manual pre condition mode.

Everytime I hear about Toyota hedging their bets and going slow on electric I think about Nokia / Blackberry taking it slow with going into smartphones / touchscreens.
@kens97sto171
@kens97sto171 7 месяцев назад
Different product and lifespan. At least in the USA, the Average person keep a car 10-12 years.. a phone 2-4 years.. Toyota has plenty of time to get something done, and they have the manufacturing capability to build them in large quantity once they decide to do it. I think Kyle is right.. they are waiting to see if EV's are what people really want long term. There is plenty of good reasons to NOT buy an EV.. especially if you just don't like Tesla's. They have a pretty boring interior.. and some things that put people off.. Weird door handles, now no turn signal stalks and shift lever.. lack of buttons.
@wtfgogu
@wtfgogu 7 месяцев назад
@@kens97sto171 Different lifespan but also different timescales to gather the necessary know-how and start production. There's also more and more options beside Telsa on the market. You can get plenty of EV's that look and feel exactly like an ICE. Replace Toyota with Nokia in your text and Tesla with Apple and read it again with an open mind. We're way beyond a temporary fad with EV's, change is coming whether we like or not :) I also 100% agree that EV's aren't for everyone and there's a lot of use cases where ICE is king and will be for a while. On the other hand, horses still have their use 100 years after the automobile came out :)
@kens97sto171
@kens97sto171 7 месяцев назад
@@wtfgogu I think you're underestimating Toyota. You actually think that they're not working on this behind the scenes? Think that's your miscalculation. Also Toyota has a lot more financial resources than GM or other domestic automakers. Primarily because they have a lot less debt than the others. And are in much better financial shape. They also have a much wider global reach. By the way I drive an EV for my work car.. 800-1100 miles per week. I consider myself to be pretty open-minded. But I'm also very much into the car industry and have followed it for decades. Then all over the news lately about the slowing of EV sales and more and more questions about whether or not it's the future. Or at least the future for everyone. Even Kyle mentioned in this video. The Toyota strategy could be the correct one. Tesla has been added for almost a decade. But really the last 5 years were there significant sales volume. And they're still selling about 2 million cars per year. That's very impressive considering where they came from. Toyota sells 10 million cars per year globally. So Tesla would need to add at least five or six more new factories to equal Toyotas manufacturing capability. And the entire time Toyota would have to sit back and do absolutely nothing... I think there's far more risk with GM and some of the other manufacturers.. They don't have the financial capability to front the money necessary to catch up with Tesla. At least not in the short term. And we don't know how long they might have until it's too late. I think Tesla's biggest problem though is similar to Apple. Certainly a lot of people like them. But about half the population doesn't and will never. Their interiors are pretty boring the exterior is somewhat boring. And they lack a lot of features even some basic cars have. And I don't think doing things like removing the turn signal lever and shifter stalks going to help bring in first time EV buyers. They're likely to get in that new Tesla and find it way too different and boring. You get in a Chevy bolt EV and it's pretty much like any other car people have driven. The other thing is just your numbers of models. Tesla really only has two mass market models. Toyota has dozens to fit different marketplaces and the needs of the people that live there. For many people a Toyota Corolla would be an absolute luxury car. And they drive very simple basic vehicles. please understand I'm not against EVs at all I own one and I enjoy it very much. But with my job, I speak to dozens of people everyday. Often the EV topic comes up when they notice I'm driving one. Leads to some pretty interesting conversations. By the way one interesting thing about the bolt EV is that I would say maybe only one person every day even notices that it's an electric car. Personally I see that as an advantage.

I cringe every time Kyle says the Ioniq 5 does not have proper trip planning. The current version of software not only populates chargers as needed, but adds or subtracts them dynamically as energy needs change. it tells you your state of charge when you arrive at a charger, how long you need to charge to get to the next one. The car gives you real time information about the next charging stop. Things like how many chargers are there, and how many are currently occupied. It also tells you how long since the last car unplugged. There have been 2 back to back over the air updates. The only complaint that you could have about this car is that it’s not like a Tesla.

I think Kyle is incorrect about Toyota. Toyota is not dong anything new with the Prius. Toyota has been doing the same thing for over 30years with hybrid, they will not improve because they don’t want to go battery electric. BEVs will only improve with mass adoption, exactly the same way that ICE did, they evolved over the decades.

If you don't put models out it is hard to learn. Not sure there is any brand where the first model they put out was a hit - you just have to learn how to do EV well so if you don't start you don't get there when the mass market arrives. Getting a bunch of mediocre first EVs is unfortunately part of the growing pains to get good ones.

Toyota making a poor EV in the BZ4X to prove to themselves that customers don't want EV's yet is hardly evidence that hybrids is the way forward.... There are a lot of mostly uninformed anxiety about EV range and charging and some of it is fair based on the mostly legacy auto half hearted attempts to introduce ineffective EVs using unreliable charging infrastructure. But state of the art EVs like Tesla and more brands coming on strong together with reliable supercharging network will work great for most users. Only significant exception is people that need to tow often above 100miles. There a plug in Hybrid appears to be the best answer for a long time
@williamquemuel7824
@williamquemuel7824 7 месяцев назад
EVs are still half baked (battery chemistries and charging infrastructure) and are high priced for the majority of the population. Hybrids are affordable and accessible. There are not enough EVs compared to Hybrids by volume to make a dent in climate change. EVs only satisfied 0.86% of the US population who can afford it. EVs are hardly a player to lower emissions. A majority of EVs are essentially play toys for the rich or status symbols. Thinking about it now, hybrids probably get driven more than EVs in terms of miles just by the fact the majority of EVs are owned by the rich. I see a lot of taxi owners who drive hybrids not EVs.

Great job with your coverage. Far be it from me to defend GM and the release of the Blazer has been a rolling dumpster fire but I think the problems happened early enough that it will end up being a hiccup that people won’t be worried about in a couple of years. I think their EVs are actually really good and will be attractive to regular people that don’t watch videos about EVs. We love you Kyle and your road trips videos but I think you focus too much on charging speed. I don’t think regular people are going to care if they are charging at 150 kw vs 250 kw. Maybe people disagree. I don’t take my EV on road trips and charge it 99% at home so I don’t really know. It just seems like you get the peak charging rate for such a short time, it doesn’t really matter all that much in terms of time. To me efficiency is more important so you are adding more actual miles per kWh. I also think people care about charger reliability. People will wait an extra 10 minutes at a charger but the charger actually has to work when they arrive.

Kyle, i have some nerdy answers about the size of the show For ya. Square footage wise, it is (or was) the largest auto show in North America. That floor alone is 840,000sqft. That said, it has nowhere near the booths or as big as previous shows in the past. In the past, Chrysler booth alone was 1/3 of the floor (that whole back section).Halls B1-B2 (north building )used to have booths as well. That was an additional 400,000+sqft of booth space. They also used to use the grand ballroom for certain auto unveilings and the rooms up on 4th and 5th floors for dealer lounges and such. Based on seeing certain doors not open though, it looks like they cheaped out on that as well and didnt do them. I think as a car enthusiast you really would have enjoyed the show back in its hayday.

Talk about the full effect of charging. I pulled up to an Electrify America charging station in my Leaf on turtle mode and the only Chademo station they had was unavailable. Had the car towed to a dealer that had a charging station that charged the battery in half the time of any station I have ever used. The Leaf is a 2014 S with a fast charging port. At 10 years old and with more than 125,000 miles the battery has degraded 25 percent. The battery has been heated to 125°F and been frozen to 15°F. It still gets me from point A to B. It's good to hear there is going to be an adapter for Chademo, because it's not just the Leaf that has Chademo. Instead of two contestants as in video tape players we have three in the plug in race. National Access Contest Superiority, NACS. The defense rests.

It's not really in their interest to sell an EV now when they've got a really good hybrid business. It doesn't mean they aren't putting a lot of effort behind the scenes on electric. I don't think they are a stupid company.

Have they added true OTA to the Ioniq 6. I was between a Model 3+ and an Ioniq 6, but the 6 has so many software TSBs that require a trip to the dealer. Who wants to go to the dealer for a software update.

The Chicago Auto Show used to be the largest in the country with three rooms this size full of cars but not anymore. The show in the past was known for its Concept & Production Car introductions, but in the last 10 years or so that's not been the case anymore.

You two complement each other, wide angle custom feel to Kyle's impressive run down. Appreciate the opinions and off the cuff remarks. Never seen you do more than 1 car a a time, so the car shows in this format should be added as a staple. Even if the same cars, can still update and evaluate in diff setting.

With CCS adapter for the Nissan Leaf coming to USA, does anybody know at Out of Spec when will EVS Enhanced have the Thermal Management System (TMS) Battery be available in the USA? This would be the final solution to the inadequacies of the Nissan Leaf.

Mazda should have had an EV Miata out in Jan or 2022 and they would have sold out. If they go out of business that one failure will be the reason.

Some pretty lame comments by Kyle...ICE is dead Kyle, even in Sports cars. Over the past 50+ years I have owned quite a few sports and Muscle cars from Alfa's, to Lotus, to Charger 440's, SVO Mustangs, and BMW's and experienced the (expensive) maintenance issues they have due to ICE's. The only reliable one I owned and still own, are the Miata's and I would love to own a new EV version. A 318 type Porsche EV would be a very welcome steed to my stable.

Refreshed Model 3. Test drove a LR which is new as most showrooms appear to be getting SR models. It was quiet, but the road noise was there. Little to no wind noise which is the result of the glass being thicker. I think tire noise is because they are using Hankook tires instead of a better tire. Also the radio at first was not great even after tuning. It wasn't until I connected my Spotify account and listened to a good source before I was blown away. Makes the system in MYLR sound pretty bad in comparison. Now I need to hear a SR degraded system.
