Hi Cyber. I actually travelled that line back in 1960, sat behind the driver in a G.W. D.M.U , via Honeybourne and Stratford into Snow Hill. Happy days. As you probably know the 5 Miles from Stratford to Long Marston is now a popular cycle trail….I’ve cycled that a few times as well. Best wishes Geoff. 🚂 🚴‍♂️ 👣 🇺🇦

In the 60,s I watched a small engine and a couple of carriages making their way to Andoversford whilst waiting for the No.1 Bus on Alma road to school. In my first job, the shift leader's Father used to drive it ! Our next door neighbour was a Station Master at the Racecourse station, a Mr Watts, I remember a photo of him in Tophat & Tails. As for watching the engines on the turntable at St. James from my school windows, great days ...

Very interesting, Simon. Didn't realise there were so many overbridges still in place. I recall being diverted over the Cheltenham - Stratford line in the 1970s, when Sunday engineering work closed the usual route via Bromsgrove.

Bit like Norwich when Norwich had 3 stations which now only has 1 station. Would like to go to Cheltenham one day.

I was born opposite st James station , in Victoria hospital in 1960 . I remember it well , lovely station .Both gone now . My uncle used to do shunting behind the old Malvern rd station , was quite a big area . Back in the eighties i used to walk my dog down that line , some of the old stations was still left , and you could find some interesting bits from the GWR era .

Great video! Have you noticed an old gate from a station on the block of flats near Waitrose? It shows a clock with time when the next train runs to London. Have you visited Piley Bridge Nature reserve?? Been there before I moved away from the UK.

Thank you for this, I am currently working remotely in Cheltenham and park here then run all the way to some offices near Waitrose, I knew it had to be a former line due to the tunnels and cutting of the landscape either side of the path.

You need to visit South Wigston which used to have 3 stations on its doorstep. The stations were as follows Wigston Magna which served both South Wigston and its larger neighbour Wigston (Magna) on the London Mainline, Wigston South on the Leicester to Rugby Line which ran parellel in part to the mainline and Wigston Glen Parva on the Leicester to Birmingham Line which is close to the current South Wigston station which opened in 1986 after the last station closed in 1968.

Great video, Cyber! There seemed to be quite a complicated history there and I'm glad there were still some remaining parts of the old railway infrastructure to be seen

Fun fact, encouraged by support from Cheltenham Borough Council, The Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Steam railway have both given direct funds and have also been allowed to place protected status on the former line's trackbed south from Cheltenham Race Course to Cheltenham Spa, by the Cheltenham Council, the railway could at some point connect to Network Rail in the south with a small Station opposite Cheltenham Spa station

I used to play in the old Malvern Road station in the mid 70s I guess and play on the old tracks Wasn’t brave enough to climb the old signals! Had trains running along there certainly in the 70s Freight ones perhaps but definitely saw them early 70s

The line to the right used to connect to the heritage line of the GWR to Toddington until they closed it during the beeching cuts of the 1960s

The railways of Cheltenham are just a shadow of their former selves. Why British Rail didn’t build platforms at Lansdown for the GWR line I do not understand. Then they could have run a shuttle to St James in the town centre.

GRAFITTI Well done, a great video of the former line and very thorough explanation. Unfortunately blighted by the assault on the environment and our culture that is Grafitti. All tolerated by the local authorities for far too long, and as a consequence condoned. Failure to tackle this scourge now means that our environment looks every bit as bad as parts of France, Switzerland and Italy... Yes, France, Switzerland and Italy.......! Failure by our Political Classes of the highest order... James Hennighan Yorkshire, England
