In the first recording, it almost sounds like there’s both a really low bass tone *and* a Tim Waurick level squeaker note in the top end

As others have pointed out, it's a Db 7th chord. What sets it apart is the inversion, vowel match, but especially the balance. Many foursomes can hit those notes, but never really lock it that tight for those reasons. AWESOME ring.

Usually you hear a chord with that much overtone or undertone at the end of a song, but just throwing it out like that is crazy

The chord in question being a justly tuned Db7. It’s crazy how flat that Cb is.

The foundation of that Db 7th is the wicked lock of the root and 5th (bass and bari), also, the 7th is tuned almost a third of a semitone low.

Platinum was an absolute supernova. So good, and burned so bright for such a short time. They're really in the same category as Dealer's Choice and Acoustix in that they represented the apex of the current form and sowed the seeds for what came next. Tricky thing to do both. Edit: Yes, I'm aware of what sets those other two apart,, and there's a credible argument Platinum should share that honor. The point remains.

Definitely the performers getting that perfectly in tune, but ALSO matching timbre in their voices that makes it sound so special, since all those chords are really simple. The walk up into a dominant 7 chord on "tell em' goodbye" instead of the expected major chord is like a gentle slap in the face. Since it's all stepwise motion and our ears hear it for a split second like a resolution. Also one little thing, I feel like right at the end it could have used 1 more chord right before the resolution to Db, is that just me?

Look up some old southern gospel for quartets - classic finishing chord there. (The Stamps were one of the groups, I believe from 40-55 years ago along with many others)

Is it just me, or in the first clip does the Bass adjust the tuning on his post (just after "The Chord") in preparation for the next chord? Seems like it drops a few cents flat from where it was.

It's a nice chord, for sure, but not all that new/challenging/out-of-the-blue. It's just a regular 7th chord after all. Barbershop has got some incredibly crunchy chords and chord progressions in it. Those are what I came here for. Again, I enjoyed this. Nice performance and the chord is perfectly enjoyable and apropos for the piece. But, other than its high pitch, it's not that special.

I totally get that, it's just that for some reason when I heard it I had this viceral reaction that made me start laughing, I think because of how amazingly in tune it was and how perfect the vowels were to make it ring so much. Also, On the original video, there are multiple comments referencing that chord as potentially the best barbershop chord they've heard, so I figured it would be cool to use as a title
